'1'he Great Adventure If you have ever set out upon an unknown road to some unknown place you will undoubtedly know the anrtcrpatton and fear that ran through the hearts of four little gtrls as they assembled rn a large room one September morning rn 1940 There were Frances Mc Bride Jeannine Carper Monera Dusek and anet Kort rn this ltttle group The ctty they were starting from was named Blue Hrll They decided to name thetr ex pedrrron Kindergarten for this was just the begnnnrng At the end of the first lap of their journey they lost anet Kort but picked up some male companions Warren Derby and Rrchard Doyle Thrs second lap of their journey they called the Ftrst Grade As they rounded a dark corner about nalr way tnrough this lap they chanced upon a lonely boy srtttng along the way They asked his name he answered Carroll Goll and they rnvtted him to contrnue the journey with them Thts made sux in the lrtrle band Monera Dusek Fran ces McBr1de Jeannlne Carper Carroll Goll Warren Derby and Richard Doyle Durmg the next lap of their journey which they called the Second Grade John Jefferres and Shirley Weber jorned the group but Warren Deroy dropped our This left seven rn the group Jeannine Carper Monera Dusek Frances McBr1de Carroll Goll John Jefferres Richard Doyle and Shrrley Weber Mtss Josephrne Wrtght was the overseer of thrs group for the flrsr three laps The next lap of their journey took them up the steep slope of the Starr Steppes and they found them selves rn all together new surroundrngs They had also acqulred a new overseer Miss Betty Hartley The group called thrs the Third Grade lap They gained and lost Allen Starr on rhrs lap and also lost ohn efferxes Richard Doyle and Shirley Weber leavrng Monera eannlne Frances and Carroll to round the wooded corner to the stretch of their adventure called the Fourth Grade Around rhts corner they came upon Robert Alber and Lots Buss They jorned the band brmgrng the number to srx agam The may grew harder and they lost Robert Alber and Lots Buss only to prck up Rudy Wilma and Wrlda rrkovsky Vaughn Schmidt and Betty Leetsch The overseer too was changed from Mtss Hartley to Kath ryn Wall on the stretch called Frfth Grade They kept right on moving but lost no one and gained only Norrxs Augustm On the lap called Sixth Grade they lost Overseer Wall but garned overseer Ethel Matrock They covered a long open stretch called Second Floor Corrrdor and came to the Seventh Grade Plam where they gatned Kathleen Hartman and lost Wtlda Wrlma and Rudy Jrrkovsky They mer Mrs Theron Flsh and asked her to oversee this leg of the journey The second half of the journey across these plains they called the Eighth Grade Along this way they grew to eleven m number adding Betty Lou Kranau Robert Kntgge and Charles Van Boenmg to the orrg mal group of erght of whom Mrs Ftsh was sttll leader From the Eighth Grade Plams they cltmbed the Higher Steppes to the Nmth Grade Journeyway Here awarred another new land and thmgs were carried on much drfferently from ever before After raking role they found that there were now twenty seven rn the group They were Norris Augustm Monera Dusek Jeannme Carper Carroll Goll Kathleen Hartman Betty Leetsch Betty Kranau Frances McBr1de Charles Van Boentng Antra AlDlU Betty Beyke Mary Brown Merle Brown Lots Buss Clara Duesterhoeft Randall Frahm Charles Frank Verla Fry Eleanor Gartner anet Kort Shirley Kort Bernard was RODCII Novak Gary Rexber Loren Rose Alun Wrllems and Gale Clrffton Before the entlre lap taking nine months from starr to finish Gale had found the may too rough and dropped out Th1s group of course requlred more than one overseer so they looked around and savt a very dxstnngtnshed lookmg group at one srde of the road In this group were mr Roge s Mrs r1cCoj M esser Mrs Spearman Mr Marrow and Mrs Hughes Because they felt sorry for thrs lonely look mg group they mvrred them to lead them in the right dtrectron which after coaxrng ttey con ented to do Charles Frank and Bernard Nass departed from the group at the end of the Freshman Lap of tae ad venture but Shirley Nass came Vaughn Schmidt re turned Wayne Alberts came and Clara Belle Snyder came then left so at the end of the journey through the Sophomore Strarr the num er of members in the group was twenty six As they entered and explored the Junror Jungle they mer Velma Kohmerscher and Snrley Dygert and mvrred them to join the Happy Band of Wayfarers because they had lost Frances McBr1de Betty Leetsch Wayne Alberts Clara Belle Snyder and Vaughn Schmidt rn the waters of Sophomore Srralr Whrle explormg Junror ungle they came upon the old custom of presenting the Junror Semor Ban quet so they first gave the tradttrontl Junior Class play to raise funds to finance If The name of the Willa Lewis who was co overseer with ames Runnalls They sponsored all the gomgs on of the group that year The theme of the banquet was the Stork Club Merle Brown prestdent of the group was the Master of Ceremonies at this banquet It was soon the fall of 1952 and the band came shufflltng through the dry red leaves to rhetr final ob jectrve Senior Utopra or at le lsr that was what they thought tt was until they got a good look ar it They then decrded rt was like most of the other parts of the journey except now they were the highest of the high the mrghty Semors It too was harder than ever before but that comes with educatlon They were rn number only twenty one untrl Betty Kranau left ln the middle of the year Then the group consisted of eleven girls and nrne boys They were Monera Dusek Jeannine Carper Anita Albin anet Kort Clara Duesterhoeft Snrley Kort Strley Ntss Mary Brown Verla Fry Eletnor Gutner Velmr Koh merscher Norrls Augustm Carroll Goll Randall Frahm Alvm Willems Merle Brown Robert Novak Loren Rose and Gary Rel er They had lost at the edge of the Jumor Jungle Betty Beyke Lots Buss and Shtrley Dygcrt Monera and Jeannine were the only two to have completed the entire adventure together In the Senior Land they produced another play Thls one was named Bolts and Nuts This helped to finance their Skip Trip to Omaha and Ltncoln to see the Ice
