Contents Administration Faculty Classes Organizations Activities Sports Jr. High Elementary Ads 3 A Break in the Day A lot of things get done in the 15 minutes of break period. People who didn't do their homework the night before are frantically rushing around to find someone who did. and the honest ones try to do it themselves. A lot of boys do their courting and girls do their flirting. Many a romance has budded during the precious minutes of break. Some students find refuge in the library. To them the library is like hiding from a jungle full of hungry lions. Break for a teacher is somethimes the only 1 5 minutes of peace he or she gets for the whole day. One usually finds a teacher relaxing in the teacher’s lounge drinking coffee or a soft drink, psyching themselves up for the next class of teenagers, rowdy from the activities of break. Even though many different things happen at break. I think 1 can safely say, break is an enjoyable 15 minutes of the school day by the students and the teachers. The new Bank of Blountstown was constructed. Abitibi closed down, but reopened almost immediately as Goodson's Manufacturing Company. The football team did not go to state, but did have a winning season. Basketball improved it’s record over the 1980 season. The BHS Band rated superior at the Florida Band Masters Festival. A new jazz band was formed and the Southern Association of schools evaluated our school for accreditation. On the national front, the outlook was rather bleak. Iran held fifty two Americans hostage for 444 days, and Russia invaded Afghanistan. Ronald Reagan was elected President. Gas prices continued to rise. Empty wallets are not an unusual sight. The price of the yearbook also took a sharp incline from eight dollars to twelve dollars. And the dollar bill is now worth only thirty cents. Hven though the price is high, many H H S students still manage to dress in style. Blue jeans once again showed their superiority, but in a new way. Many were jazzed up with the prestigious name of Gloria Vanderbilt or Calvin Klein scrawled across the back pocket. However, other students were seen in the traditional style jeans, and dresses were changed by adding slits. Guys styles also changed, but most turned up in already-adapted Levi's and plaid shirts instead. Winter gave BUS students a great opportunity to show off the red and white athletic jackets and sweaters they had earned. Velour sweaters with designer pins of Miss Piggy and Mr. Bill started appearing with jeans instead of T-Shirts. Despite early morning hours, many students gave up hours of precious sleep for an extra minute or two to achieve that ‘ just right' look. Whether it's T-Shirts, jeans, dress, or suit, BUS students still show their individuality through their choice of clothes and fashions. By Laura King A Winning Season Recognition is one thing a sport can certainly add to a school. Since we won the state championship in football three times in the last decade, people remember Blountstown. With football season comes pep rallies. Pep rallies give the student body a chance to show their spirit and to be a little rowdy — something they can't do in class. They relieve the pressure of school life. Sports rescue us from the monotony of every day school life. However, this isn't all that they do for the students at BHS. Sports are a major part of the educational curriculum. Through sports players learn to cooperate with others, to respect their educators, to be a good loser and winner, to be responsible, to work hard as an individual and team member, to have a positive mental attitude, to be a leader, and respect leadership. Many students are able to further their education through scholarships awarded them for their athletic abilities. In these ways, sports can add to school life and play an important role in education. By Jackie Phillips 15 Students Come to Life After Sehool The bell rings. Sehool is out. Those sleeping since eight suddenly come alive, pour out of class, run to the lockers, and race to their cars or buses. As the cars leave their parking spaces, bounce over cement mountains. (sometimes called speed breakers), and squeal out the back gate, tbe football players trudge out to the fieldhouse, with their red jerseys slung over one shoulder. They spend most of the afteroon “working up a sweat for Friday’s game. Meanwhile, others report for work, where they too blow their afternoon, trying to earn money to support themselves. (This really means money for lunch downtown, and other “necessities ). Those who manage to be free, whether by sheer will power or the grace of Cod, can be seen cruising the streets, or with eyes glued to the fifth running of “Gilligan’s Island.
