During his six years as supervising prin- cipal, the school has progressed in all its phases - academic, social, physical, spiritual, and civic. . . O I 'Meri ?. Mr. Paul King is completing his third year as assistant principal and his second as special instructor in driver education. In June of 1957 John Peacock and Mary Lou Adams represented the state of Florida at the National Convention of Student Councils which was held in Roswell, New Mexico. The council plans to send three delegates to the National Student Council Convention this summer in Ferguson, Missouri. Blountstown's student council was elected Vice-President of the Florida Association of Student Councils at the state convention in Clearwater, April 17-19. Delegates attending the convention were: Patricia Pelt, Earl Mont gomery, and John Morgan Davis. Others who attended were: John Peacock, Mary Lou Adams, Mary Virginia Knight, Frances Dykes, Sandra Halley, Tommy McClellan, Johnny Roy Redd, and Jerry Thomas. Chaperons were Miss Martha Blackmon, Mrs. J. Frank Adams, and Mrs. Bart Knight. The council also sent delegates to the district convention in Madison. The banquet was held in honor of the local council in order to get the campaign started for State Vice -President. The council has given to the school the new goal posts on the football field and has also made a payment on the Public Address system. This year the council gave the school a painting of a Tiger which has been placed in the hall of the main building. The Student Council was co-sponsor of the Calhoun County Youth Workshop March 7-8, 1958. The work- shop was divided into two groups-grades '7-8-9 met in Blountstowng grades 10-11-12 met in Altha. The council's regular income comes from the operation of the school supply store. Projects and events scheduled and ultimately successfully carried out included Bake Sales, trekking to an enjoyable and informative district meeting in De Funiak Springs, the sale of Christmas Aprons, Family-Fun Night, and a trip for five delegates to the state convention in Daytona Beach. During the state convention Dona Leonard, local president-elect, was elected state Vice-President of Public Relations. Membership in MU ALPHA THETA is based on a student's having better than a B 'aver- age over five semester's work in abstract mathematics and at least a B- average in all academic work, Provisional membership re- quires the same grades but is based on three academic semester's record. To start off the year the chapter gave an informal initiation of the new members, which was held Octo- ber 29 in the Home Economics Cottage. Other activities included a party at the club house January 18, and a trip to Altha to observe grades 1-6 in grammer school. The chapter, with the help of the Junior Honor Society, was in charge of the concessions at one of our local football games. These girls and their escorts were guests of honor at the an- nual Alumni Banquet on Thurs- day evening, October 10. The campus takes on a national con- vention atmosphere during Spring Elections. No Sputniks for reasonable facsimilesj were launch- ed during Blountstown Public School's first annual Science Fair, but several entries were proof that local students are more than interested in what makes things and people tick. Science projects were displayed May 12-13, 1958, and were the main attraction of the monthly P. T. A. meeting. Competition was on three levels - elementary, junior high, and senior high. Student winners were a- warded appropriate medals. Student Council Awards were re- ceived by Mary Lou Adams, John Charles Peacock, Frances Dykes, Betty Hand, Mary V. Knight, and Sandra Brantley. John Charles Peacock and Earl Mont- gomery earned the athletic depart- ment's citations for scholarship. Eight senior cheerleaders and two junior cheerleaders received letters. Band Medals went to Charlene Schwendemon, Carmen Good, Ruth Prough, and Brenda Good. A certificate for PRESS COVERAGE of athletic events was received by Park Trammell. A similar award was made to Charlene Schwendemon for BUGLE blowing each school morning. P. F. A. awards were made to David Pippin and Danny Yoder. Senior High Trophies for scholarship were made to Elsie Alday and runner- up Betty Hand.. Rhoda Myers received the junior high trophy. Gifts included a check for 370 from the N. H. S. to the School Library, a plaque from the N.J. H. S. to the school, and personal gifts from Dona Leonard to her campaign managers for state vice-president. F. T.
