Butler Studer The Student Council, composed of four officers and thirteen homeroom represen- tatives, is the governing body of B. P. S. The student body works through the Student Council with the faculty in upholding the high ideals and standards of our school. In addition to the routine work of operating the supply store, serving as monitors, and dealing with student problems, the Council sponsors several special events. The Council's first major project was Homecoming, October 15. November 11, we held a special flag service on the front lawn instead of our daily flag salute and devotional. In January, our organization conducted a GOOD CITIZENSHIP drive. During this campaign, Reverend Fulton Bryan, pastor of the local First Baptist Church, talked to the student body. Selected students presented panel discussions and quiz programs, and homerooms made and distributed posters on civic responsibilities. 's backing was instru- mental in interesting other civic organizations in the establishment of a Youth Center. Another pro- ject was aiding the Mayhaw students in their organization of a Student Council Chapter, our officers installed the Mayhaw Chapter officers when the latter chapter began functioning. Our chapter participated in both district and state conventions. Patricia Finlay, Richard Leath, Johnny Rooks, and Julie Leonard were our representatives to the district convention in Port St. Joe, November 12-13. At this meeting we furnished luncheon favors, led a discussion group, and obtained our first district office, the Vice Presidency. For the state convention in Tallahassee, March 3-4-5, we prepared and distributed convention publicity folders. State delegates were Patricia Finlay, Julie Leonard, Mary Lou Adams, Johnny Rooks, and Donnell Whitfield. Mrs. Butler, the sponsor, ac- companied the delegates to both conventions. 1 in and Is the Center of Student Activity 27 President- - - - -Frances Ayers Treasurer- - Secretary- - - - Joyce Yon Sponsor Frances Ayers rBobby Tyre Jo Ann Heal Janice Johnson Jeanette Shields Roberta Jones Edward Parrish Patricia Finlay John Wynn Sara Williams Gwen Herndon Duncan Finlay Bernie Wood Taylor Agnes Mears Sandra Dawson National Hon --------- SueBoggs - - Mrs. Geraldine F. H. S. membership. During the '54-'55 school year our local chapter has tried hard to attain and maintain these ideals. Our chapter has been active in charity drives - polio, tuberculosis, and cancer. We believe that our efforts have helped influence people to give more generously. On December 3, following the formal initia- tion of new members the chapter entertained at a tea in honor of the initiates, their parents and teachers. N. H. S. sponsored Clean-Up Week, March 7-11. Student-Teacher Day, April 8, gave the teachers a period for observation and stock-taking and the student teacher a day of teaching experience Perennial chapter services are bulletin board dis- plays and the sale of athletic tickets. To defray state convention expenses the chapter sponsored a post-season basketball game that pitted the Juniors against the Seniors. NA'rroNAr. Members aid Mrs. Musgrove in checking books, collecting materials, and conduct- ing drives. Major projects of the year were Book Fair and Book Drive. Proceeds from Book Fair were spent for new books, Book Drive netted donations of both books and magazines. Meetings are held bi-weekly. Each group has its own slate of officers and an enrollment of more than twenty members. Projects are conducted both on an individual group basis and on a co-operative basis with all three groups working shoulder-to shoulder. Pictured at the left are the groups during regular meetings. From top to bottom are the seventh grade, eighth grade, and senior high clubs, respectively. Besides leading the game yells, the girls conducted pre-game pep sessions and sold booster badges in an effort to create stronger school spirit. Spice was added during the basketball season by the junior cheerleaders who were Patsy Smith, Norma Savell, Patsy McClellan, Frances Price, Frances Dykes, and Frankie Brizelle. Miss Joyce Ellis sponsors the cheerleaders. Future Teachers The local organization is not affiliated with state or national groups, believing that it should become larger and stronger before joining either. During the year, the group has discussed both the advantages and disadvantages of teaching careers and each member has analyzed his or her own reasons for wanting to teach. Mrs. Bernice Caswell, county supervisor, has shown the group several films and has furnished in formational pamphlets on teaching careers. Members have observed classroom teaching in the elementary grades, reports on these observations being given to the group at later meetings. Several members have had real teaching experiences as substitute teachers. Active members are Bernie Wood Taylor, Carol Smith, Marcia Ann Redd, Gayle Bozeman, Sandra Eldridge, Bobby Tyre, Gwen Herndon, Agnes W and Hester Durham. Mrs. Peggy Garrett advises the group. :I Back the Tigers Through Thick and Thin Q? -v-ri Cwzc Groups f ,f' Durmg the 14 55 school year the Blountstown Publrc School has recerved com mendable co operatron from the local c1vrc orgamzatrons both rn frnances and seruces The P T A spent S200 for physrcal educatxon equrpmeni S100 for elementary school equrpment and S100 for Junror Senror hrgh school equrpment Iron posts and charns were placed around the new playground and parlung areas as a chrld safety measure The P T A was lnstrumental 1D gettlng the swamp reclamatron project gun As a result of the jornt efforts of the P T A county School Board County Commrssroners and State Board of Health the school s playground area has beer' more than doubled The Rotary Club fmanced the 10th and llth grade testrng program by paymg S130 for Iowa Achrevement tests gave S60 for payment on a new Encyclopedra Brttanmca has orgamzed a prg charn for Vocatronal Agrrculture students arranges sponsorshrp of steers for F F A members pays for tonsrllectomres of needy students The Lrons Club buys glasses for needy students and purchases rnsurance on the school's football players 39 r kk N-3.'L ' . . Much of this was due to the inexperience of the players. They did show much improvement by the end of the season, howeverg and they are looking forward to a much better season in '55-'56. Four of the Tigers made the Apalachicola Valley Conference team--Ralph White, Johnny Rooks, Donnell Whitfield and Richard Leath, Charles Ray Howell was chosen by his teammates as the season's Most Valuable Player.
