Harris Candids 15 One touch of nature .. Photo by M Harr Layout by M. Harr 16 Candids It is a bright, sunny afternoon in June like the day I graduated from high school, or the day I moved on campus for orientation. It is the last day of finals for the first of the summer sessions. By this late date al- most everyone has left to go home for the long weekend. The campus is quiet and as I pass the dorms on my walk to the tri-level, I can see many of my friends in my mind. ..seems like only yesterday. BU hasn ' t changed that much since I came here for classes for the first time on that September morning. Sutliff has had a face lift and, so has Old Science. They have broken ground for a new dorm, and a new library is in the offing. A few professors have gone, new ones have come to take their places. The senior class has changed more than a few times. The old adage is true. The more things change the more they stay the same. It is hard to remember a time when my life did not revolve around this campus. It will be all that much harder to leave. I imagine it is that way for most people. My friends, my old job, my activities, every- thing that means anything to me has been here the past four years. Graduation means changes: the past left behind, the future on the horizon. But have I made a difference? Coming to college, I swore that this would be different, that I would make a mark, not just blend into the scenery. But have I? Or will my name just be added to the thou- sands of BU alumni? What is different about me? Hopefully, it is the way I perceive this campus, the people who work and play here. No one will have the same memories, the same feelings that I do each time I think of my four years here. College, this college in particular, is special to me. No one, but me, will feel the same way about this place that I do. Whatever it was to you, or to me, it will remain so. Special places. ..special times. ..special people. It has been with deep sadness that Bloomsburg Uni- versity mourns his death. He was both friend and benefactor to the university. Mr. amd Mrs. Mitrani were responsible for the Mitrani Scholarship which now enables academically talented students to come to Bloomsburg. Mitrani Hall, formerly Haas Auditorium, was re- furbished and remodeled with help from the Mitranis. In remembrance of the efforts made by Mr. Mitrani and his wife, we the staff of the OBITER dedicate the 1988 OBITER to Mr. and Mrs. Marco Mitrani. Dedication 33 Tl O ' r.9 .V . Photo by M. Coach Charlie Chronis- ter ' s men recorded an 1 8-9 record with a team that in- cluded just two seniors. The Huskies ' record is the best since the 1983-84 campaign when the club wen 19-11. Bloomsburg got off to a fast start, winn- ing 10 of its first 12 games but managed only a 7-5 re- cord in the Pennsylvania Conference (PC) Eastern Division to miss the play- offs by one game. One of the highlights during the season was a 93-88 triumph over Con- cordia (N.Y.) in the season finale which gave Chronis- ter his 300th victory at the school. The veteran men- tor stands at 300-158. Senior Joe Stepanski led a balanced offensive attack averaging 1 3.7 points per game and was joined in double figures by freshman Craig Phillips at 1 1 .7 p.p.g. and senior Matt Wilson, who averaged 10.3 p.p.g. and led the club in rebounding with an aver- age of 8.6 per contest. The Huskies used a powerful offense to score over 80 points on 1 3 occa- sions during the season, including three games that broke the 100-point mark. In only the second game of the season the team set a new school standard for points scord in a game when the Huskies crushed Lincoln (Pa.) 133-70. ' Turning the volume up, he spins around in his chair and grabs a Modern English album, Ho! That was right there! Ted Hodgins has been at WBUQ since it started broadcasting. He like to work alone and he likes to work late at night. I don ' t like the afternoon. It ' s bor- ing, Hodgins says as he leans back inhis chair, At night you get crazy. You know, late night college junkies. The senior mass comm major answers the phone. It is a girl from Elwell Hall staying up late with Hodgins. She is typing her philosophy paper and wants to hear some Elvis Costello. Hodgins playfully rebukes her for procrasti- nating and promises to get her request on as soon as he can. He smiles and says, This is it. I was pro- gramming director here first. ..We decided to do whatever the other stations weren ' t doing. That ' s the way it should be. That ' s why we are progressive, says Hodgins. He picks up my recorder, That ' s quotes there! ' PROGRESSIVE! People don ' t know what it is. It ' s just new music. He puts on the headset. Sliding the outlevel up, he says, Getting Away A- cross the Border. There ' s Modern English from Stop Start. And as I mentioned before they were at Sus- quehann University ' s Webber Chapel. It ' s 12:22 in the morning in the hap- pening metropolis of Bloomsburg. Starting up a record he says, Anybody can be a disc jockey. It ' s so easy. I don ' t know why people say they can ' t do it. I ' m having fun. The phone rings for the twentieth time in half an hour. It is the girl from Elwell again. She has given up on her paper. Hodgins tells her to ' 1hrow the typewriter out the window, woman. Hodgins gets ready to close down and realizes that someone has taken the sign-off cart. Ah, yes, he says to the faithful few who are still listening, someone has stolen the sign-off cart. Today starts off national pancake week. And hopefully, that girl from Elwell Hall has not jumped out of her building. We ' ll see ya tomorrow, we ' re outta here! 126 WBUQ WBSC WBUQ WBSC 127 HUSKY SINGERS 1 28 Husky Singers ii ■' - - ■' :- ■' «!?5? £ --- r si !m-i Husky Singers 129 Pi Omega Pi (PHP) Row 1 : K. Wilkinson 142 Concert Choir CONCERT CHOIR by Susan Sugra When spring rolled around this year, members of the Bloomsburg Univer- sity Concert Choir an- xiously counted down the days until May 16 which marked the beginning of the group ' s six day tour throughout Canada. While under the direction of Dr. William Decker, con- certs were performed in Montreal at St. Joseph ' s Oratory and St. Patrick ' s Church; in Quebec City at St. Ann es de Beopre Shrine, Chateau Front- enac; and wrapped up the tour in Bennington, Ver- mont at The Old First Church. By giving performances on a tour the Choir be- comes more polished, be- cause the same music is repeated throughout each concert, commented Dr. Decker. Tours also give the choir the opportunity to travel and to be sur- rounded in an environment that speaks another langu- age. We can ' t afford to take a big tour each year; it ' s in- credibly expensive to travel. So every other year a smaller trip is taken. In 1 985, the Choir gave a senes of concerts throught Philadelphia and in 1986, Bloomsburg students sang their way dorn the east coast to Florida. The 1986 tour consisted of performances in Savan- nah Georgia; on the cobb- lestone streets in Ports- mouth, Virginia; and in Or- mond Beach, Florida. Last spring, BU students performed in Washington, D.C. and Inner Harbor, Maryland. Concert Choir 143 Students of Sociology (SOS) 1st Row: B. Wartz, B. Huber (V.P.), B. Mordan 2nd Row: M. It does my heart good to see tie-dyed T-shirts and peace signs being worn once again, and to walk down the halls and hear the Beatles ' Revolution. As I watch all this I can ' t help but let my liberal mind wander back to some of those values espoused in the 60 ' s, and I begin to hope that the me generation can become the we generation once again. As I think about the year though, I ' m distressed that we still seem stuck in our me ness. During the Reagan-Gorbachov Summit, while the two leaders were discussing peace, I kept hearing people talking about not being able to trust those Soviet commies after the treaty is signed. I suppose it ' s ideal- istic, but I still hope that peace could bring about trust. After all, with a treaty for peace, we shouldn ' t have to worry about what would happen in a time of war. Even without being ideal- istic, I can still find hope in the fact that the Soviets are people too, and they don ' t want to see the world destroyed anymore than we do. I ' m also quite distressed at all the attention given to crises in America in the past year when all they did was reflect our society. Child abuse, homelessness and illiteracy are just three of the issues that have been given attention as crises lately. These problems have existed and will continue to exist long after the spotlight burns out, unless we decide to do something about them (such as providing free parent educa- tion centers, aid for the homeless and mandatory literacy test- ing for all persons entering junior high.) The United States spends so much time, energy, and money on matters having little to do with our nation that these issues are ignored all too often, and we must begin to give them attention. This brings me to yet another area that bothers me As our national debt soared to new heights and Wall Street plunged to new depths, our President was still trying to support a need- less, destructive war in Central America that made some re- call another 60 ' s event: the Vietnam War. Perhaps this is one area in which we could be a little selfish and stop concentrat- ing on the problems we ' re helping others create. In the past year I ' ve seen a lot of the me values of the yuppies, but I ' ve also seen room for change and people lead- ing the way. As our generation begins to make its impact maybe we can begin to think in the more humanistic values held by the somewhat forgotten era which, although it had its bad point, did do some good. Not everyone is into themselves totally anymore, and I hope that this trend will continue. As John Lennon once sang You may say I ' m a dreamer, but I ' m not the only one. I hope some day you will join us, and the world will live as one. Michelle Seibert, Co-Editor Epilogue 220 Epilogue 1987 1988 GALLAUDET STUDENTS STRIKE FOR DEAF PRESIDENT By Debbie Bentz and Kelly Umstead Gallaudet University, the world ' s only university for the deaf, announced the selection of a new pres- ident, Elisabeth A. Zinser, on March 7, 1988. The selection brought on campus wide protests that led to Ms. Zinser ' s resigna- tion six days later. The students and staff protested Ms. Zinser ' s selection be- cause she was a hearing person; and they felt it was time for a deaf university to have a deaf president. Ir- ving King Jordan, a deaf psychology professor and Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences replaced Ms. Zinser as the eighth pres- ident. The events at Gallaudet didn ' t just affect the students and staff of one university, it affected deaf, hearing impaired and hear- ing people everywhere. Dr. Samuel Slike, who is coor- dinator of the Hearing Im- paired Program and a member of the Department of Communication Dis- orders and Special Educa- tion here at Bloomsburg, said that deaf and hearing impaired schools as far away as Sweden held sym- pathy strikes in support of the Gallaudet protest. Dr. Trom quiet harms and Jirst beginning, out to unctiscoverecC encCs, TPvere ' s nothing worth tfre wear oj winning, But CuugPvter and tFve Cot e oj riencCs. HiCuire BeCCoc Slike feels that the events were a major step ahead for the deaf. As hearing people across the United States and around the world watched the events unfold, they saw deaf people as valuable and pro- ductive members of society; not as people who need to be constantly cared for. Many hearing people have always looked at deaf- ness as a handicap, but Greg HIibok the student body president and one of the leaders of the protest at Gallaudet, commented in an interview with USA TODAY that the deaf don ' t see themselves as handi- capped, butrather as a sep- arate ethnic group with their own langauge — American Sign Language (ASL). The events at Gallaudet gave the deaf community the publicity it needed to change some of the mis- conceptions hearing people have about the deaf. The deaf proved to themselves that they can make a difference in those issues that are important to their lives. Dr. Slike com- mented, the deaf culture itself found out that it has a certain kind of power. The events are bound to change perceptions of all young deaf and hearing impaired people because now they have a role model to follow. They will grow up knowing that being deaf doesn ' t mean that their life will be unsuccessful; they ' ll know that they too can make achievements like that of President Jordan. The events at Gallaudet may have lasted only seven days, but their impact will be felt for years. It changed some of the hearing world ' s perceptions about the deaf; but most importantly, it gave the deaf community a renewed sense of pride and accomplishment in who they are and what they can do. Index CGA Pledge Features Sports Epilogue 221 Phi Sigma Sigma Admitted to ISC by Michelle Bupp (re- printed from the Voice) Members of the Phi Sigma Sigma pledge colony were given voting privileges as members of the Intersorority Council to- ward the end of the 1987- 1988 academic year. With the membership, the new sorority has gained voting privileges on such controversial issues as the hazing policy. In addition, the members can make suggestions for new policies made for sorori- ties, according to Mary Ann Patton, president of ISC. Patton says she and the ISC committee felt that Phi Sigma Sigma was qualified for acceptance. The com- mittee consists of two re- presentative from each sorority. They, more than adequ- ately, completed service projects and got to know other sororities. The for- ming of the constitution was done well, too. They did all that we require and we were very pleased with their performance. Patton said. She pointed out that the sorority is now permitted to wear their letters. Phi Sigma Sigma is still considered a pledge colony because they do not have a pledge class under them. They will officially become a sorority next semester. Including Phi Sigma Sigma, ISC now consists of 10 sororities. ISC governs these 10. Beta Sigma Delta Raided In Biggest State Raid The more than 1 40 arrests appears to be a state record for a raid on a single party, police said. The accompanying distur- bance, a BU official said, was the most violent in the school ' s recent history. As debate about the raid raged on campus and in town, BU officials promised disciplinary action against the party organizers and a series of meetings with students to promote re- sponsible behavior. Meanwhile, some stu- dents who had been caught up in the ruckus bragged about their ex- ploits, while others criti- cized authorities and some criticized their fellow students. Two questions have been raised about the raid state police troopers from the Bureau of Liquor Con- trol Enforcement conduc- ted on the Beta Sigma Delta fraternity house on Lightstreet Road: 1. Should police have packed the 1 37 alleged un- derage drinkers into buses and taken them to a mass processing center to be issued citations instead of slowly removing them in groups of twos and threes to the police station several blocks away? 2. Did calling firefighters to use their hoses on students incite the violent march through town? In addition to the 1 37 un- derage drinking arrests three young men were arrested on charges stemming from the dis- turbances. On the following Friday, police announced a fourth such arrest. The editorial staff of the OBITER neither condones nor agrees with the actions of the several hundred students, police, towns- people and administrators the night of Thursday the 19th of November. The facts, however, do stand for themselves. A hundred and thirty seven students were arrested for underage drinking that night. Approx- imately several hundred other students watched from across the street as police led students from the Beta Sig house and then many marched down through Main Street Bloomsburg destroying both public and private pro- perty as they did so. Both police and students acted with anger and frustration that night. And it was the first time in Bloomsburg University ' s recent history that students reacted with such rage to a topic. 222 Epilogue THIRTY SOMETHING BRINGS BABYBOOMERS CLOSER by Lisa Marie Gilliard Love, friendship, feel- ings, relationships, sex, marriage, parenthood, div- orce, jealousy, work, cry- ing, smiling, laughing, car- ing... life... thirtysomething. According to Life Magaz- ine, ABC ' s thirtysomething was the breakout hit of this past season. Each week, over twenty milion viewers take time out to watch this primetime serial in which characters portray self- analysing, upscahl types in their thrties who try to juggle love, work, and par- enthood. Although the show is titled thirtysomething, div- erse age groups tune in each week. Michelle Seibert, BU sophomore, says Even though the characters are in different situations than we are, we can still experi- ence the same emotions that they do. We can iden- tify with their feelings and we can look forward to some of the good things about being thirty-some- thing. thirtysomething deals with everyday situations many people can relate to. For example, Mel Harris and Ken Olin portray Hope and Michael, a happily married couple with a child. Many women can relate to Hope, who is struggling though a period of inde- cisiveness about restarting her career after having a child. Patricia Wettig, Ken Olin ' s wife in real life and Timothy Busfield portray a confused couple who de- cide to separate, and how they deal with their children, pressure of sep- aration, and being single make for interesting plot- lines. Other characters repre- sent independent and sinlge individuals and the puzzling and troubled as well as wonderful moments to which many single people can relate to. There has never been a television show quite like thirtysomething. When you walk away from the televi- sion after watching thirty- something, you leave with some type of message, one which might just en- hance their perspective on life. PARKING: A Sore Spot in Bloomsburg By Ken Kirsch (reprinted from the Voice) The Bloomsburg Town Council on August 10 passed a law establishing permit parking in the re- sidential area east of Bloomsburg University. The new law was designed [0 halt what the town calls a flood of student com- muters who park in re- sidential areas east of Bloomsburg University. ' The permits will cover Darking for about 300 lomes bounded by East Fourth, Third, Spruce, -ocut, and Chestnut streets and Oak Lane, Pine and Anthony Avenues. Residents can obtain heir decals by showing Droof of registration for a naximum two vehicles per ■esidence. Each residence is entitled to a guest permit as well. Each apartment in a single building is also elig- ible for three decals, if the rule applies, but rooming houses do not fall into the same category. Landlords must obtain the decals for their tenants or designate one tenant to do so by com- pleting and notarizing a statement. Permits are re- quire on the above streets between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. except days when the uni- versity has no classes scheduled. The fine for parking in these designa- ted areas during the above mentioned hours is $15 per violation. The new law is intended to eliminate non-resident student parking east of campus. Epilogue 223 NEW PROVOST HIRE By Lori Mekulski (reprin- ted from the Voice Dr. Betty Allamong, a native from Morgantown, West Virginia was selected as Bloomsburg Uni- versity ' s Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs. She is a graduate of West Virginia University with an extensive back- ground in Biology. Dr. Allamong spent fifteen years as a professor of Bio- logy at Ball State Uni- versity in Munci e Indiana. Some of Dr. Allamongs ' responsibilities include planning and coordinating academic programs and policies, and playing an ac- tive role in faculty recruit- ment and development. She is the chief academic officer and second-ranking executive office of the uni versity. Bloomsburg is re cognized as a qualitys chool. I am impressed by the students. remarkea Dr. Allamong. They come secure with what they want to do with their lives. I Dr. Allamong said she is also impressed by student enthusiasm. 198.. .199.. .200! by Howard Nields (Ob- iter Staff) When our country won its independence from England some two hun- dred and twelve years ago, we were faced with the seemingly impossible task of finding an agreeable way of running the new fgovernment. For four long and tiring months our Founding Fathers isolated themselves in the swelter- ing walls of Independence Hall in Philadelhpia to draft a plan for our new govern- ment — many plans were suggested and jsut as many were rejected. Fin- ally one hot day in Sep- tember, the delegates em- erged from those hallowed halls with an agreement that was eventually accep- ted by all. The only ques- tion that remained was whether or not this plan would work and stand the test of time. One Sep- tember 17, 1987, that question was answered when the American people celebrated the two hun- Wh YV you hav£. no rooj , tPve s t) ' s tfve limit. dredth anniversary of the Constitution of the United States of America. The day was marked by various parades and conventions around the country. Even the town of Bloomsburg was involved in the cele- bration. At four o ' clock on the 17th of September, bells were rang across the country to co mmemerate the hour when the Con- stituion was signed. The bell in Carver Hall was rung for two hundred seconds, each second signifying a year our Constitution has survived. For the people of Phil- adephia, the birthday of the Constitution was a matter that held even more senti- mental value than it did for the rest of the country; after all, Philadelphia was where the whole thing star- ted. In honor of the occa- sion, the city decorated itself and its townspeople in the dress of two hundred years past. Then a parade marched through the city and ended at the doorstep of Independence Hall, where numberous speeches were heard glo- rifying the advances our fine Constitution has made. The day was topped by the release of red, white, and blue balloons into the sunny sky over head. Involvement in the re- cognition of such a mom- entuous event as this one by the American people, makes it easy to see why the Constitution has per- severed. As long as everyone maintains this type of pride and respect for our fine country and the way in which it is run, I can almost assuredly say that in the year 21 87, American will be celebrating the four hundredth anniversary of the Constitution of the Un- ited States of America. 224 Epilogue BU Welcomes Dr. Habib S.C: Dr. Habib, would you tell me something about your background? M.A.H.: I was born in the south of India, and when I was three years old my parents moved to England, where I ' ve lived ever since. So, although my roots are in India, all of my education was in England; I suppose culturally, my background is fairly mixed. S.C: I underst and you received your Ph.D. from Oxford — on of those im- pressive old English uni- versities? M.A.H.: Yes, it ' s a nice little university, it ' s been getting on for a thousand years or so, but Oxford is a strange place, actually; the city ' s center is very small and crowded. I suppose the thing I like the most about Oxford is that it ' s very cosmopolitian, it ' s also the third biggest tourist attraction in En- gland, you get people there from all over the world. S.C: Have you had tea- ching experience both in the United Kingdom and the United States? M.A.H.: This is my first job teaching in the States; in England I taught at Ox- ford University for about three years, but just on a part-time basis. I ' ve also taught at various colleges over there, both literature and the English language. S.C: Do you see any dif- ference in the students and the schools between Eng- land and the United States? M.A.H.: I think that, in some ways, is a very dif- ficulty question to answer because there are so many different types of edu- cational institutes in America. I think the schools in England are comparable to the bigger universities here in the States. In England, you have to take an exam called the Ordinary level at the age of sixteen on be- tween five to ten subjects, then you specialize in usu- ally three subjects between the ages of sixteen and eighteen; most people study three sciences or three arts, by the time Eng- lish kids get to college, Mow is not the end. It is not even the beginning oj the end. But it is perfvaps, the end oj the beginning . Winston Churchiii they ' ve had a pretty solid education. I think that standard is probably just as high in America, especially in the bigger universities. S.C: Do you believe for- eign students work harder and take their schooling more seriously? M.A.H.: Again, that is a hard question to give a blanket answer to. In America, a higher percent- age of the population goes to college, and not all are equally motivated. S.C: What do you miss the most about England? M.A.H.: I thought I ' d miss the lovely countryside be- tween London and Oxford, but coming to Bloomsburg, I don ' t miss it at all, there ' s much more of it here! Of course, I miss family and friends and the familiarity of a small town. But that ' s to be expected; I do like it here, the people are very pleasant. S.C: What do you enjoy about teaching the most? M.A.H.: If I had to make a choice, I ' d say philosophy and the ideas in literature, and the classics. S.C: On the lighter side, what do you enjoy doing in your spare time, assuming you have spare time? M.A.H.: In the good old days when I had spare time, I used to do quite a bit of voluntary work for an in- ternational charity. I run fairly regularly, I play squash, tennis sometimes, as well. I have unfortunate habit of smoking, I ' m hop- ing to get rid of it one of these days. S.C: Are you working on any projects? M.A.H.: I haven ' t had much time to devote to it, but I am working on a series of translations; four books of Urdu poetry into English. I ' m hoping to get them published. (Urdu is a language of India and Pakistan.) My Latin and Greek are rusty, Latin I learned in school, I taught myself Greek. (The inter- viewer is impressed.) S.C: I like to ask you to comment on a theory prop- osed by one of my prof- essors; are Americans im- pressed by your accent? M.A.H: It ' s interesting to examine the American reaction to English things, they admire but they don ' t adopt the traditions. Ameri- cans are much more practi- cal take roads for instance, in England one can barely get a car down one... S.C: I ' m dying to ask- do you drive here? M.A.H. : Yes, I do. S.C: On the correct side? M.A.H.: I try to, actually the thing I hgave the most difficulty with is the speeds. In England they drive much faster. People have warned me to stop dhving at 95 mph... S.C: You drive at 95 mph? (The interviewer is shocked.) M.A.H.: Well, yes, I have. If I continue I might end up behind bars — I suppose my class will have to come to jail. No, he hasn ' t had a speeding ticket yet, and yes he ' s going to learn to slow down. Professor Habib is a knowledgeable, and very likeable addition to the English faculty. Welcome to Bloomsburg! Some of the funds will purchase books and materials to enhance the research collection of the library, he said. President Harry Ausprich congratulated and thanked the students for thier generous gift and said, It should prove an in- spriation to everyone plan- ning to take part in the uni- versity ' s celebration. Ausprich said that the trustees are considering additonal target areas for the campaign that will be announced later. 226 Epilogue REVIEW: Fatal Attraction, Anyone? Guys, before you breakup with your girl- friends, ask yourselves a few questions: 1) Did she ever pour acid on your car? 2) Did she boil your family pet (preferably rabbits)? 3) Did she ever lurk about your house and then vomit in your evergreens? 4) Did she ever kidnap your child or call you names you would be too embarrased to repeat to your lawyer? If you answer yes to two or more of these questions you really should reconsi- der giving this gem up. The movie Fatal Attrac- tion kept audiences on the edge of their seats, waiting to see what would happen when Michael Douglas, Glenn Close and Anne Archer combined their talents in this love story gone awry. Dan (Douglas), a lawyer and good provider for his family, is the ideal guy ex- cept he has just one little weakness; blondes in tight black dresses. While at a party with his wife Beth (Archer), Dan spies Alex (Close), a gorgeous blonde in a tight black dress. Beth just so happens to be going out of town for the week- end, Dan thinks to himself, as he and Alex contemp- late sleeping together that night over a cup of coffee in a New York cafe. One thing leads to an- other and Dan finds himself trying to get out of this re- lationship with a now preg- nant Alex. Well, Dan, blame it on testosterone, but no matter why it hap- pened, you ' re in trouble. Beth is now in the hos- pital after an automobile accident while searching for her missing child, Ellen, who (you guessed it) Alex has taken to the amuse- ment park unbeknownst to Beth. Not only is Beth hos- pitalized with broken bones, and her child mis- sing but to top it off, her marriage is falling apart. Why? Alex. Fatal Attraction contains many thrilling scenes like the ones mentioned above. It was nominated for num- erous Academy awards and the exceptional cas- ting promises this movie to be one of the best of the year. Condoms Come to BU Students by Dawn D ' Aries Reprinted from the VOICE Condoms are being sold in the University store and have been available to students since spring break. The contraceptives, which are 45 cents, are available in the health care section of the store. Direc- tor of Kehr Union and Stu- dent Activities John Trathen said the decision to sell condoms resulted from strong student endo- rsement. The issue was dis- cussed in the Community Government Association senate and by the Kehr Union Governing Board. I think the more they [condoms) are available, the more opportunity there is for people to use them, Trathen said. He said condoms were made available in the school store rather than the Health Center because the university does not want to give the impression that it condones sex. The university store is selling the contraceptives at cost. The University Store ahs sold about 20 Trojan brand condoms. Despite a Bloom News telecast, few people are aware that the store has condoms available. Student reaction has been mostly positive. Rob Bentzel, a junior, said, I think it ' s a very responsible action on the part of the un- iversity. Epilogue 227 I by Dave Sauter Super Bowl XXII pitted the Wash- ington Redskins against the Denver Broncos in a game that not only dec- ided pro football ' s champions for the year, but also featured record scoring and the landmark appearance of the event ' s first black quaterback. Doug Williams of Washington was the center of attention for the two weeks leading up to the game, but experts figured John Elway would lead the Broncos to their first title after two failed attempts. The game started out just as pred- icted as Denver jumped all over the Redskins with quick accurate passes leading to fast scoring. On the first play from scrimmage, Elway connected with Ricky Nattiel for a 56-yard touchdown pass. The next time the Broncos gained pos- session, they easily moved downfield to set up a Rich Karlis 24-yd field goal, making the score 10-0. It continued to look more and more bleak for the Redskins as they pro- by Dave Sauter The world of sports was shocked this past January by the death of ex- basketball star, Pete Maravich. The former LSU star succumbed to a heart attack at the age of forty, while playing a quiet pickup game in Pas- adena, California. f laravich, nicknamed ' Pistol Pete ' , built up tremendous statistics throug- hout his days at LSU and the prof- essional circuit. He played three seasons at LSU in which he scored a total of 3,667 points and averaged 44.2 points per game. Both are still records in the NCAA. He also played SPORTS IN REVIEW Redskins Take Super Bowl ceeded to fumble, but luckily recover the kickoff. The a few minutes later, Williams ' left knee was banged up and he was forced to leave the game. His replacement Jay Schroeder, en- tered the game and proceeded to get sacked, throw an incompletion, and force the Redskins to punt. Williams returned to the game in the second quater and suddenly, Washington ' s defense was working together. Denver ' s was not. At the end of the second quarter, it was Washington, 35-10 in the lead. The Redskins scored five touch- downs, four from William ' s passing attack. The 35 points in one quater, as well as 356 yards of total offense were new playoff records. Williams, alone, accounted for 228 yards as he completed nine of eleven passes. And what was most remarkable about the scoring explosion, was that Washington ' s time of possession for the quarter was a scant 5:54. After halftime, it was merely a mat- ter of playing out the game for the Re- dskins. They added one more score in the fourth quarter to end the scor- ing at 42-10. Despite the heroics of Williams, it was far from a one-man show for Washington. Timmy Smith, a little-known rookie who gained only 1 26 yards in the regular season, set a Super Bowl record for rushing for 204 records, as did wide receiver Ricky Sanders whose nine receptions gained a record 193 yards. F inally, there was Williams, who finished the game with 18 completions in 29 attempts for a record 340 yards. As a team, Washington went into the books with 602 total yards, in- cluding 280 yards on the ground. For the 73,302 fans in attendance in San Diego, they witnessed a game that was predicted to be a Denver blowout. Instead, they saw a great performance put on by a young and talented Washington Redskin team led by the first black quarterback in Super Bowl history, Doug Williams. Pistol Pete Maravich Dies ten years in the NBA during which he averaged 24.2 p.p.g. and was selec- ted to play in the league ' s All-Star game five times. He also won the league title in scoring during the 1 976-77 season with a 31 .1 average. Pistol Pete was also well known for his views of life off the court which eventually led to much public dis- enchantment with the star. Towards the end of his career, he started for- ming radical view on controversial issues, medicine, and politics. He alienated many of his friends and his aim mater. in the last few years of his life, he found religion and finally gained peace with himself, tvlaravich began to make up with his friends and was reconciled with LSU. He was in Cal- ifornia at the time of his death to appear on a Christian radio program. Pistol Pete Maravich, dead at the age of 40, is survived and remem- ered by his wife and two young sons. And he is also remembered as that basketball star who scored 50 points a night by zealous basketball fans nationwide. Pete Maravich may be gone, but he lives in the memories of his fans. 228 Epilogue Twins Win Series in Exciting 7th Game Baseball is a funny game, Casey Stengel once said, and never did It ring more true than in the 1987 World Series as the Minnesota Twins defeated the St. Louis Cardinals to earn bragging rights as World Champs. How funny or strange was the series? Well how does a team given 1 25 to 1 odds to win it all during the pre-season actually win it? And how about for the first time in a World Series his- tory no team could win on the road? And don ' t forget that for the first time in his- tory, the Series was played indoors. The World Series went a full seven games this past year, with the seventh being an absolute classic. Masterful pitching, clutch hitting, nice catches, runners thrown out at the plate and contorversial calls all highlighted the Series Finale. In the end, the Twins could call them- selves the champions, win- ning the series 4-2. In the game, St. Louis opened up quickly, scoring two early runs in the second inning off of starter Frank Wiola. Jim Linde- man, Willie McGee, Tona Pena and Steve Lake pro- vided the offense for the Cardinals. However, that was to be all the offense mustered as Viola allowed only two more hits over the next eight innings. Meanwhile, Minnesota was having problems get- ting their powerful offense in gear. They managed to run in the sedond on Lombardozzi ' s single, but were ripped off on a bad call at the plate as Don Baylor was called out. The Twins added another run on Kirby Puckett ' s double in the fifth inning to tie things up. Minnesota finished up the scoring in the sixth and eighth innings. In the sixth, Greg Gagne hit an infield single for the go-ahead run, and later in the eigth, Dan Gladden go the Twins some insurance when he doubled home Tim Laudner. With the start of the ninth inning, Minnesota man- ager, Tom Kelly, pulled Viola for his ace reliever Jeff ' The Terminator ' Readon, who quickly mopped up the Cardinals for the Series title, viola was credited with the vic- tory while Danny Cox absorbed the bitter loss for St. Louis. The Twins opened up the Series by winning the first two games at home in the ' Homerdome, ' a place where the sounds of the crowd actually magnify in noise level. At times, the noise exceeded the dec- ibel level of an airplane en- gine starting up. The Cardinals respon- ded to Minnesota ' s Series lead by winning the next three games at their home in Busch Stadium. Sud- denly all momentum had changed to St. Louis and Twins fans had something to worry about. Was Whitey Herzog about to pull another miracle? The answer was no as Ken Hebel ' s grand slam pow- ered the Twins to an 11-5 victory in Game 6. Game 7 was all Minnesota. For Minnesota, the Met- rodome proved to be a re- warding place as fans sup- ported them all year long. Perhaps this sign sums up the Minnesota Twins senti- ments: We ' ve been to the land of OZ, But there ' s no place like DOME. Special Thanks to all writers for all sections Good Luck! Most people were very surprised when appearing before them was a small, blond, sophomore speech major with the smile of an angel and the disposition of one crazed from too many sleep- less nights. I was not exactly what everyone expected. However, when publishing a yearbook, one can never expect anything. When I joined the Obiter staff as a high school senior, my friends thought I was crazy. I just finished doing my own high school yearbook. The pressures of high school yearbook deadlines not far behind me, I found myself with college yearbook deadlines. Was I nuts? Of course. Yearbook I have found is similar to disease. Once you catch it you cannot get rid of it, no medicine will help. Most of my staff has it by now. To my staff: Sue. .roomie, your countless corrections, pep talks, and bitching will always be a reminder to me of the love and hard work you put into our yearbook. You are the best copy editor an editor-in-chief could have. I look forward to having you as managing editor. It will at least be interesting and maybe my office will stay clean and my staff will have office hours and people will be able to find me. Maria. .my friendly computer science major. Always a helpful hand and mostly kind words. Your dedica- tion to your section is unsurpassed. The talks before interpersonal, CGA, and the long gripe sessions on those lazy afternoons are appreciated. What a great business manager you ' ll make. Those crazy days in the Community Activities office and most assuredly that picture will be remembered. Carolin e. .love, what a friend! Always remember the color section. We took so, I mean, too many pictures. One too many deadlines and forget it. Remember that the friendship that started in high school can flourish under the maroon and gold banner of Bloomsburg U. Good luck with MGM. And Don. Lisa and Carolyn. .you two are a pair! The OBITER sports editors never looked better. And neither has the section. You are two very special people. Thank you. Michelle. .what can I say. Two years of this staff and we ' re still here. I don ' t know what Epilogue would have been like without you, but it would have been boring. Key word: POOL. Remember the man with a purpose will still be here next year. Hint, hint. Renee..you were a late starter, but thanks for all the help. Make sure you come back next year. To my friends: Mr. Chomiak..hon, wherever you are I know you are doing well. Thank God for the day I walked into the Voice office and met you. Your perceptions and goals for journalism on this campus are now mine. Thank you. T.J,..I don ' t think I would have survived two years on this campus without you. I ' ll miss you a lot. Best wishes with journalism. Hodgins, Steph, Mara, Ted, Tom, Sheryl, and the rest of my senior friends. You know that I wish you the best of everything. Come back and visit! To my summer ' 88 roomie Kel: Thanks for putting up with everything while I finished this book including the week that I only came home to sleep. You have a great sense of humor and I don ' t think I would have lasted those four weeks without your support. God Bless. Christopher. ..last but not least among my staff and friends. Thanks for all the sessions in the dark room. You never know what you will find in the dark room. It might be coming up roses, but just in case, keep that knife handy. You really are a nice guy. To the University Relations staff especially Paul, Winnie and Chris: Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Let ' s do it again next year. Same time, same place. Steve, Donna and the rest of the Merin staff.. WE LOVE YOU! and we couldn ' t have done it without you. Thank you. To the Bloomsburg administration and staff (esp.
