But where paths that have affinity for each other intersect the whole world looks like home, for a time. Why love? ... her nose breathes in the air of a world that I know; therefore I love that nose. Her ears hear music I might sing half the night through; therefore I love her ears. Her eyes delight in seasons of the land; and so I love those eyes. Her tongue knows quince, peach, chokeberry, mint and lime; I love to hear it speaking. Because her flesh knows heat, cold, affliction, I know fire, snow, and pain. David Dellinger Gerhard Lang Anthony Burgess JOHN MCLAUGHLIN THE MAHAVISHNU ORCHESTRA THE FINE ARTS r,, ' ' Tf I m yj IW u Loneliness is part of the penalty every true artist pays for being different from the rest of his fellow men. Hendrick Van Loon: Beethoven Arturo Bassols, visiting sculptor POLYURETHANE ENVIRONMENTAL FOAM PHENOMENON Robbie Jones f m The instant I ' d finished, I heard a ga-Zump! I looked. I saw something pop out of the stump Of the tree I chopped down. It was sort of a man. Describe him? . . . that ' s hard. I don ' t know if I can. He was shortish. And oldish. And brownish. And mossy. And he spoke with a voice that was sharpish and bossy. Mister! he said with a sawdusty sneeze, I am the Lorax. I speak for the trees. I speak for the trees, for the trees have no tongues. And I ' m asking you, sir, at the top of my lungs- He was very upset as he shouted and puffed— What ' s that thing that you ' ve made out of my Truffula tuft? He snapped, I ' m the Lorax who speaks for the trees Which you seem to be chopping as fast as you please. And at that very moment, we heard a loud whack! From outside in the fields came a sickening smack Of an axe on a tree. Then we heard the tree fall. The very last Truffula Tree of them all! No more trees. No more Thneeds. No more work to be done. So, in no time, my uncles and aunts, every one. All waved me good-bye. They jumped into my cars And drove away under the smoke-smuggered stars. Now all that was left ' neath the bad-smelling sky Was my big empty factory . . . The Lorax . . . and I. — Dr. Seuss Board of Trustees Mr. E. Guy Bangs, Mr. William E. Booth, Mr. Frank D. School Nursing Anne Patterson Pub. School Nursing Virginia Donovan Pub. School Nursing Kathryn Reese Pub. School Nursing Susan Houck Pub. School Nursing Jean Klawitter Pub. School Nursing Linda Martz Pub. School Nursing W : ' i The campus has finished another year. Charles Carlson served quietly as a gentle- man. Never confuse politeness with morality. What events of this year will influence the coming semesters at B.S.C.? Has anything of significance actually happened? For the masses it has been a quiet year, and for the few, a tumultous time. The outer layers of the campus were content with hypnotists, sexuality programs, field house concerts, and student union activities. With a flair for emptiness, the campus carried on with business as usual. Towards the end of the political war staged by those sides who simultaneously perceived themselves as all that is good, the campus began hoping for a break. During this rest, the few honest souls would recuperate and those who thought of themselves as imbued with mission would wait only long enough to regroup. In a somewhat secretive manner, the Board of Trustees has honored the process of choosing a president. From the perspective of the more politically astutfe, it seems fair to say that the candidate from Shippensburg State College had it in the bag. McCormick, we wish you luck. I would suggest that future student bodies watch the new president carefully, whomever he may be. As the new executive enters office and things start happening, you ' ll begin to see what was sacrificed on his part so he could get the job. It doesn ' t happen any other way. With the death, or should I say killing, of the Great Society on a national level we also see the demise of B.S.C. ' s academic society. Retrenchment is a bureaucracy pulling its belt one notch tighter. Money is scarce and anyone dropped from the ranks will not be replaced. In effect, when all the chopping away is completed, B.S.C. will have a faculty that will be the same in twenty years. Only those with ten- ure survive, not the strong. What feeling is in the air after this last year? A handpicked president and a secure bunch of tenured faculty. With this, B.S.C. enters the mid-seventies, and with this she ' ll leave the seventies.
