Mr. Kistenfeger with some help cuffs Mr. O'Neals' enthusiasm. Last year BHS introduced a new dean, Mr. Kistenfeger. He moved here from Olympia where he taught English for three years and was the assistant football and basketball coach. Then he moved to Tremont where he taught another four years of English and was head football and basketball coach. Then he moved to Bloomington and became the dean of stu- dents at BHS. Mr. Kistenfeger feels the ti- tle dean is not the right word because people fail to look past the title, and do not get to know the person. To succeed in life Mr. Kistenfeger feels that today's high schools should produce well educated stu- dents. Mrs. Brown's secretarial duties are numerous. l9 BGARD DECISIONS TAKE SHAPE Many decisions were made by the Board of Education concerning the policies and development of our school. Part of its job involved managing the District 87 budget, approving educational staff, and adopting the school calendar and making changes in curriculum and program. Since the board members are elected by the public, they must consider the best in- terest ofthe taxpayers, faculty, and stu- dents within the district. This responsibil- ity resulted in the vote to build an addi- tion to the industrial arts division of BHS. The School Board acknowledged the need for an auto garage so students could ob- tain work experience. Soon, thanks to the Board of Education, the auto mechanics classes will receive shop training on the grounds of BHS. The Board of Education members: Front: Mrs. Smith. They were willing to help students no matter what problem, big or small, from scheduling classes to discuss- ing students' futures and problems. The counselors also worked diligently in the second year of the career guidance center. These friendly counselors were, of course. Mr. Bruno, Mrs. Golden, Mr. Hostettler, Mrs. Mizell, Mrs. Rau, and Mrs. Wamser. 3, air 1 . fx A,,,p-f if Q Ni y , Above: Mrs. Williamson returns a message. Deciding which course to take was the student's choice. A student could choose anything from Math I and geometry to micro-com- puter math and calculus. No math class 'H was simple, but the BHS staff made it less complicated for everyone. The math de- , partment consisted of eight hard-working teachers, including one new staff member. lt was Mrs. Gordan's first year to teach at BHS. Stephanie Ireland speaks up in class, Mrs. Smith begins further explanation of Americas early literary traditions. American literature keeps students interested. Miss Coffman shares a story. The English department, again this year, offered a wide variety of courses. One major change in the English program was that juniors were required to enroll in an American literature class. Mr. De- Jaeger led a staff of thirteen teachers who taught twenty-nine different courses. These courses ranged from introduction to world literature and communication skills to drama and masterpieces of British lit- erature. Students not only worked on im- proving their grammar, spelling, and vo- cabulary, but they also gave impromptu speeches, read short stories, and studied legendary tales. These classes included pot- tery, sculpture, drawing and painting. For those students with exceptional ability sen- ior studio was offered. To expand their knowledge students participated in a variety of field trips to art institutes, shows. and museums. Brad Butzirus puts the finishing touches on a art project. STUDE MAKE CAREER CHGICES At BHS industrial technology, formerly industrial arts, existed to provide educa- tional experiences in industry for young people. One main experience was understand- ing industry and its roots in today's com- plex society. Furthermore, in all classes. Q both boys and girls studied applicable . skills and worked with the materials, methods, and processes of drafting, elec- tronics, electricity, graphic arts fprint- ingj, metalworking, power mechanics, and woodworking. These experiences helped students make career choices and gave them basic skills in a selected career. Mr. Frank, Mr. Serivner, Mr. Brumley, Mr. Alexander, Mr. Bishop, Mr. Huntman, Mr. Baker. 25 HO E ECGNOMICS ADD The home economics department staff is Mrs. Washnok, Mrs. Gordon, Mrs. Fry. ln the home economics department, classes were available in basic foods, basic clothing, heritage crafts, foods for mo- derns, clothing for moderns, the young child, advanced foods, advanced clothing, independent living parenting, and family living and marriage. The students that participated in these classes found the pa- tient assistance of Mrs. Fry, Mrs. Gordon, and Mrs. Washnok extremely helpful. These courses prepared students for in- dependent life. Many took advantage of the vast opportunities provided. They real- ized that basic knowledge in the areas of cooking and sewing would add the spice and style their lives lacked. In other courses helpful pointers for becoming a re- sponsible spouse and parent were dis- cussed. Through the experiences available, many students emerged better prepared for the future. . The foreign language department staffis Qfront rowj Mrs. Hughes, Miss Lyles, Qrow 25 Mr. Hughes, Mr. Ruddy. The foreign language courses available at BHS provided challenge and excitement for interested students. The four lan- guages offered were French, German, Lat- in, and Spanish. The students were intro- duced to the basic communication skills and culture of the language. The higher level courses worked toward developement of reading comprehension and fluency. Some students were able to visit the coun- tries and experience the different customs and traditions first hand. This proved to be the best test of their skills in the language. For any student, the study of a foreign lan- guage gave them a better understanding of a culture in a different part of the globe. Sure enough, they were the BHS fine cooks. They cooked everything from American dishes to Italian dishes. If students didn't wish to partake of the fine food, they ate other snacks or microwave sandwiches. This re- lieved the cooks from the pressures of cooking for over 1,600 students. These three students, Koji Numura, Mike Takano, and Izumi Nagasawa all came from Bloomington's sister city of Asigawa, Japan. Two of these students, Mika and Izumi. were not the official students sponsored by the Sister City Program. Although they paid for all their own expenses, the pro- gram did aid them in finding families to stay with. Izumi stayed with the D. Phoe- nix family of l703 E. Washington, and Mika stayed with the D. Gehrt family of lO5 N. Mercer. The official exchange student at B.H.S. for the l98l-82 year was Koji Numura. Koji stayed with the Don TeVoert family of 408 W. Hickory Street. He seemed to enjoy school and living in the United States, and said that he made many friends here. The three students brought over here by the Sister City Exchange Program will not only be taking back with them many memories and friendships, but more im- portantly, will be leaving behind them the many good times and laughs that they shared with B.H.S. students. Ending the season with a 6-3 record, four all-conference players and an 18-l4 victory over Danville at Homecoming. the football team definitely had a winning year for BHS. The varsity football's win- ning record of six wins and three losses was one of BHS's best in recent years. All the players had winning talents. winning skills. and winning attitudes throughout the season. Four of these players especially proved what winners they were by being named to the all-conference squad. These players were Bill Doud, centerg John Thomas, linebacker, David Gordon, tight-endg and Rick Wills, safety. Probably the most important victory for the team and fans was an 18-14 victory over Danville at our Homecoming game. BHS had not won a Homecoming game for nine years before the victory last sea- son. All in all it was a winning season, not only for the team but for all of BHS as well. 'yi f if-K., ? +333 'Zi'-? i i A! 5, K . The opening of the season looked bleak for the bas- ketball team, but they made a terrific comeback. Ear- ly in the season the netters lost to Morton, Danville and Springfield. Then came the Illinois State Classic, where they improved their playing greatly. In an overtime game against East Moline, BHS pulled through and won. Decatur Eisenhower was put down at the tournament and Bloomington went on to play Big 12 foe Lincoln. However, BHS lost to Lincoln and played Peoria Central for a third place finish. During the tournament Dave Gordon, a center, was selected to the Illinois State Classic all-tournament team. The 1981-82 intercity title went to BHS, de- feating Normal 47-46 in the final game. Another highlight in the season was a 54-52 win over Lincoln. 75 After only one year of high school bas- ketball experience, the sophomore basket- ball team learned to pull together for those tough victories. Ten sophs showed their togetherness when they defeated both Lin- coln and Danville. The sophs were lead by Tom Armstrong, a strong player in scoring and rebounds. Armstrong's record high scoring of 32 points was displayed to the dismay of Galesburg. The team was beset with many injuries during the season but managed to keep up their spirit and style that made them worthy of the Raider name. Another outstanding event in the season was the finish of 15th out of 104 teams at the state tennis tournament. At state Jill Joslin and Chris Branom competed in the singles bracket while Courtney Allen and Lexy Kammler par- ticipated in the doubles bracket. Through it all the lady Raiders proved that seniors or no seniors they still had the talent and determination to call themselves winners. After losing four starters to graduation the girls' basketball team had to readjust their team strategy. The inexperience of the team had only a small effect on their playing. By the end of the season the girls had given their opponents a Hrun for their money? In a 51-33 game Champaign Central was one of the first teams to feel the effect of the lady Raiders power. Dur- ing their first home game, the girls' repu- tation grew with a 44-39 victory over De- catur MacArthur. Team captains Tammi W1 X! X! The Girls Softball team did very well during the '82 season. In varsity softball the four seniors definitely proved to be valuable players to the thirteen girls in their playing and gave them encourage- ment during all the games and practices. They placed first in the Springfield and Eugene Hill In- vitationals and first in Big 12 and District. As far as JV tennis is concerned, they also did quite well. They were first in the Pur- ple Invitational, 4th in Highland Park In- vitational, lst in Bloomington Invitational and 3rd at Arlington. A good cheerleader needs dedication and lots of spirit. Practicing every other night after school did not give the girls much free time, yet they managed to keep up their grades and get a little socializing in be- tween. At every football and basketball game, together with loyal BHS' fans, the cheerleaders urged the Raider teams on to victory. This support was appreciated by both the fans and the teams. This year it was made extra special with the form- ing of the Honor Society Club. Meetings were held regularly with su- pervisors Mrs. Mizell, Mrs. Haeffele, and Mrs. Detweiler. The idea was to involve the students in activities specifically designed to encourage leadership, character, schol- arship, and service to the community. A 4.0 grade point average was needed to be accepted in the National Honor Soci- ety. Students accepted participated in car washes, volleyball games, and several ban- quets. They also prepared and conducted both of their initiation ceremonies for in- coming members. Each day twelve students and I met during sixth hour with our advisor, Phil DeJaeger. Each day we worked to produce each and every page of the book. If it werenlt for all of the time spent to produce this yearbook, you would not have it in your hands this mo- ment. I would just like to let you know of all the help that we've had to complete this book. First, our advisor, Mr. DeJaeger, fD.J.j spent many hours checking and double checking for mistakes that could ruin the effect of the book. He also organized the staff so that everyone shared the work. Next, I'd like to thank tha staff for their time and energy. I would espe- cially like to thank Becki Onnen for her ideas and time spent writing poems and completing drawings. Also a special thanks goes to Kathy Glon, Laura Decker, Julie Baxter, Anne Borders, and Mike Jackson. These people spent that little extra bit of their time to make the book just a little better. I'd also like to thank Jim Gaisford of Rembrandt Studio for his photogra- phy, Bob Donnelly of Herff-Jones, the faculty for its cooperation, and the ad- vertisers and patrons for their support. Last, but certainly not the least, I'd like to thank you. If you weren't here, there wouldn't be a DIARY OF '82. fiat U.,d,iD'uD
