Academy of Science, on organization which attemps to provide out-of-class opportunities for students to learn more about the sciences, visited the General Telephone Company on one of its many field trips during the year. An Em- ployee ofthe company gave the young scientists a glimpse of the maze of wires in one part of the building. Clubs Implemented Knowledge ln Academic Subjects Dr. Robert Weigel pointed to the home of the Canadian birds he described to biologists, from left to right: Mary Lou Dollins, Carolyn McCannon, Bob Kommers, and Susan Rowe. 30 Student Council, librarians, and monitors gave valuable service to faculty and students during the year. By supporting desirable activities and giving students a voice in school policy, the Student Council helped to make the first year in a new building a successful one. Council members served as guides for the many open house oc- casions. They cleaned and placed trophies in display cases, directed the 38th annual home- coming activities, successfully sent the United Campaign over the prescribed goal, entertained instructors at a tea, sponsored after-game dances, helped write a student handbook, and instigated work on the creation of a new school emblem. Monitors and librarians, sacrificing their own study time, offered invaluable service to the school. Monitors collected absence reports and distributed announcements. Librarians helped type book lists, sent out over-due notices, shelved books, and generally kept the library in operation. Three closely related organizations, Biology club, Academy of Science, and Mathematics club, gave students many opportunities to increase their knowledge of science and mathematics.
