ents in most of their activities. They toured Beich's Candy Company, attended area and state meetings, and honored their employers at a ban- quet. Paul Simon, Representative in the Illinois legislature, discussed Challenges of l960,' at the banquet. Marilyn Golden and Fred Bruner were elected to state office during the year. Tironian Circle, already one of the largest school clubs, initiated 35 newcomers in the fall.. They gathered for a Wiener roast, Christmas party, and skating party. They heard business- men Vlfarner Tidemann, Harry Lawton, and Gar- rett Stone discuss i'What It Means To Be Pro- fessionali, and earned money for a Chicago trip by sponsoring a Saturday bake sale. Future Homemakers of America earned mo11ey at a bake sale and the football conces- sions stand. The girls ate a progressive dinner, formally initiated new members, and honored their mothers at a banquet. Mrs. Thelma Ross of the University School of Beauty Culture and three of her students gave good grooming tips at one meeting, and Miss Beverly Anderson of the Northern Illinois Gas Company offered help on quick and efficient snack preparations at another session of the club. ifi tittigittt PLAN mms Y ii iwm mf was'-s ' A display window just outside the distributive education classroom gives future distributors an opportunity to practice window trimming. They Aroused Student Interest Outside Classroom One of the aims of Future Nurses club was to become better acquainted with programs offered by schools of nursing. The club visited Brokaw Hospital where Mrs. Dorothy Cobb, director of nurses, holding papers, explained the educa- tional opportunities of the local hospital. it W 25

Nancy Wallace, Peggy Rust seated, Barbara Washburn, and Martha Griffin had earned Thespian standing by the middle of the year as a result of their extensive participation in dramatics. Re-organized after a decade's absence from the scene, Future Nurses club was activated with the idea that uthrough discussion, personal con- ferences, and field trips students who planned to make nursing their profession might be better informed. The girls toured local hospitals, visited Chicago Vifest Side Medical Center, heard Miss Emily Carrdow of the University of Illinois School of Nursing, learned about scholarships from Williaiii E. Skadden of the Illinois Depart- ment of Welfare, and received immeasurable help from their adviser, Mrs. Ruth Barford. Hoping to develop a better understanding and appreciation of speech, Forensic club heard two college student programs, gave two assemblies, and attended a speech festival at Carbondale. An Illinois Wesleyan University panel ap- peared before the club in a program of oral interpretation before speakers from Illinois State Normal University demonstrated monologue, play reading, and poetry reading. The group explained the function of their club in one as- sembly and then provided an assembly com- memorating the birthday of Abraham Lincoln.
