Three language clubs, a writing organization, and two school publications offered students an ample opportunity to perfect their world lan- guage study, improve their writing techniques, and get a taste of journalistic experience. Co-consuls of Latin club, John Rodgers and Kent Gummerman, planned traditional meetings interspersed with more formal meetings for Latin enthusiasts. The second largest organiza- tion in the school entertained themselves at a chili supper, a potluck dinner, and the annual Roman banquet. In more serious moments the students listened as John Haughawout illus- trated a talk about his European tour with slides. They also heard Mrs. Helen Chioes of Illinois State Normal University describe the cities of Rome and Pompeii. Susan Vannice and Cecily Sypult, presidents of Spanish and French clubs, respectively, col- laborated in planning a treasure hunt and a pizza party for the two language groups. French club sponsored a refugee child for a month as one of their year's projects. Spanish club con- cluded their year with a typical Spanish dinner. An impressive array of professional writers helped Short Story Club improve its writing skill. Robert Brome from Illinois State Normal University spoke on The Five Cis of Wfritingf' Miss Bess Hibarger lectured on writing short stories. W1 Married an Authori, was the subject of a talk by Mrs. Harold Sinclair, the wife of a noted author. ,ludy Epple, a former winner of the Merwin Cup and the Pantagraph Journal- ism Scholarship winner, discussed creative writ- ing. Authors of prize winning poems and short stories were honored at the clubis annual ban- quet in the spring. Award winning writings were then published in The Aegis. llelaying the activities of all the clubs and printing the prize winning stories were just a part of the work of journalists publishing the Aegis and Aepix. The stall of The Aegis, the weekly newspaper, worked diligently through- out the year to relay news of the school accu- rately. The Aepix staff tried to provide an accu- rate record of the school year. These writers gained valuable experience in journalism and had the feeling of pride in seeing their work, as well as the efforts of some of the most talented writers in the school, in print. They Promoted Interest Through Social Activities After hearing a speaker, Latin club adjourned to the cafeteria to eat chili. This was one of the first meetings of the club. Laughter seemed to be a prime factor at this table.
