CLASS HISTORY 1938 39 Recollectuons of hugh school experuences are never quute forgotten but clung to our ever uncreasung fond memorues throughout our luves These past four years spent un hugh school have enabled us to make lufe long fruends of complete strangers have guven us a broader scope of luvung have shown us how to laugh and play and have helped us to take our places un the communu tues of whuch we are part The year of 1938 39 remunds us of many pleasant memorues We were all unuted by the common bond of rank Freshmen Hugh school was entered wuth muxed emotuons shyness fear hope doubt self confidence or the lack of ut just what kund of a mark would we make? To some members of our class the hugh school buuldung was not new but to others ut was very strange It took a luttle whule to orlent oneself to the unfamuluar surroundungs In spute of our large number Q91 strongj we man aged to get acquaunted un a surprusungly short tume Wuth the results of our first class electuon we were quute confident of a successful start The officers were Presu dent Paul Malunosky Vuce Presudent Paavo unno Secretary Cluve Mench Treasurer Arthur Coutu Perseverance a sturdy symbol was our motto our class colors were maroon and gray whule our class flower was the beautuful sunset tea rose Sometumes we chuckle as we recall some happy ex peruences during our freshman year Do you remember Boardung House Bumps the orugunal comedy wrutten by the three playwrnghts jane Reddung Audrey Zack and Carmela Attardo and presented bv the unuor Hugh Dramatuc Club? Thus experuence gave us enough confi dence to put on the well known play Burds Chrustmas Fresh from a relaxung summer we eagerly returned to school un the fall of 1939 All told we were 89 sun tanned students thurstung for knowledge Our capable Sophomore oflicers were Arthur Coutu Presudent Paavo junno Vuce Presudent Helen Grane Secretary Elaune Hanson Treasurer Two projects carrued on by the Homemakung stu dents were a turkey supper put on for the faculty and an afternoon tea for faculty parents and students Marie DEngenus was chuef cook and manager whule Alberta Alexson Mary Regunu and Margery Fletcher were hostesses All the gurls helped xn the cookung bakung and servung Beung more grown up and socuable now we as a class gave two sport dances Dancung proved so enjoy able a pastume that the Gurl s A A too gave a large dance unvutung the whole communuty who cordually accepted The Student Councul representatuves from our class were ane Reddung Grace ohnson Arthur Coutu and Carol wuth Therese Quugley m the role of Mrs Ruggles and Esther Smuth as Sarah Maud plus an equally good supportung cast The begunnung of our career un journalusm was the publucatuon of the unuor Hughlughts a newspaper con taxnung many ullustrat1ons by the art edutor Herbert Schremmer and contrubutuons by other members on the staff under the capable management of Dorus Chappell ln the sprung of 1939 the State Contest Sprung Fashuons netted Mary Lagan a blue rubbon for a dumuty dress she made But that wasn t the only field un whlch we receuved honors for when the gurls scores un hockey basketball and baseball were tallued ut was found that the freshmen had won un every event a record that has remauned unbroken durung the past four years The boys too gave theur upperclassmen a good stuff workout Many had theur eye on the varsuty team and after teduous hours of practucung theur goal was attauned Wuth the sprung weather came the unuor Hugh Party where shy awkward boys and gurls became grace ful dance partners By thus tume of the year we knew ourselves pretty well and duscovered among us a great deal of talent Evelyn Webster Dolores Punney and Gladys Tuttle were our puanusts Frances Zuto entertauned wuth the accor duon Leu us Hayes the saxophone and Ernest Tavener twurled the baton une came all too suddenly and before we knew ut we were beung promoted to the Senuor Hugh School The finushung touch to our freshman year was the hularuous outung to Lake Compounce where we all made fruends wuth the breath takung roller coaster 39 40 Us Paul Malunosky who helped select a fine movung pucture machune In the early sprung the gurls were unvuted to Farm ungton H S for a playday We soon return the cordial unvutatuon thus startung a serues of vrsuts to varuous schools unstututung good wull and fruendshup About thus tume the boys won the unterclass basket ball games Some of our boys helped the varsuty to get unto the C D finals where we reluctantly ceded the cup to our ruval Ellsworth The annual field day gave Paavo Junno and Walter Sudol a chance to prove theur abuluty as Paavo won first place un the uavelun throw whule Walter won the mule Here us a good place to men tuon the boys un our class who entered the field of sports all year round Csoccer basketball track and baseballj and played accordung to the ten commandments of good sportsmanshup The athletes are Leonard Bull ohn Canfield John Clark Arthur Coutu Muchael Kohler Ralph Loveland Paul Malunosky Patsy Russo Tracy Stevens Leon Tulun Robert Walsh Harold Watkuns - - - ,, . . . , . 1 ' , - . . . . .
