SPIRIT OF 79 The 1978-79 year has been very successful for the High School Pep Club members and sponsors. This year they had three new sponsors who have helped our organization 100%. They are Mrs. Nuwana Anderson, Mrs. Janice Willis and Miss Kim Matlock. With their help, they sold candy, spirit ribbons. Homecoming mums, and worked in the concession stands during home football games. Other activities the Pep Club did were: decorating the halls, making signs and candy boxes for the boys, and enjoyed a fun filled initiation. This year they were 58 strong with a lot of support and enthusiasm for the boys. The Pep Club would like to thank the students, teachers, administration, and most of all our sponsors for making this an enjoyable and memorable year. The 1979 Annual Staff worked very hard to get out the ’79 Lion. With representatives from the sophomore, junior, and senior classes this year’s staff was the largest and probably the loudest. The staff traveled to Central State University in the fall for a workshop on yearbook layout. They also worked several concession stands to raise money to pay for their darkroom supplies. Again this year the staff had use of darkroom facilities donated by the Blanchard News, which saved about $700 in the cost of printing pictures. Also, this year Sandra Heanager, co-editor, was awarded an $ 1100 photography scholarship at U3AO in Chickasha. The staff is proud of its book and is especially thankful for those few who worked during the summer to finish the book. Both the Grandmothers’ Tea and the Secret Grandmothers’ Tea were huge successes. We also held a teacher appreciation day. We spent a lot of time and hard work on our banquet and it turned out to be the nicest one ever. We ended the year by attending the state rally in Okla. City and then our mother-daughter buffet where the new officers were installed. Under the direction of advisor Mrs. Leatrice Sluder and Pres. Linda McGinley, who was also the Okla. FHA National Committee member, the girls have made a fine contribution to the school and community. 30 FFA Back Row L-R: D. Gunner, L. Simmons, F. Brinsfiels, D. Wilson, D. Ledford, R. Chandler, S. The Blanchard Student Council had an exciting year under the leadership of President Nita Stacy and the sponsorship of Mrs. Stumpff and Mrs. Shaw. The council sponsored a door-decorating contest at Christmas, sponsored a “pretty leg” contest for the boys, held Blanchard’s first-ever Sadie Hawkins Day, conducted a Senior “Most” contest, and bought a new trophy case for the high school. It was a very rewarding year and the Council has many exciting plans for next year. Sponsored by: Oklahoma School Supply 1305 N. The first annual Sadie Hawkins’ Day games sponsored by the student council were a roaring success. It was a little disorganized as there were many late entries as the classes chose members to represent them in the events of sack races, piggy-back races, Volkswagen push, tug of war, wheelbarrow races, and others. It appeared that the Jrs. were victorious over the other classes in events, but everyone had a great time. Kevin makes a good block The ’78-’79 edition of the Blanchard Lions provided area fans with an exciting season. Composed of mostly underclassmen, the Lions had to fight inexperience and rely on talent, speed, and determination as the starting line-up fluctuated looking for the right combination. The Lions did well in the Harrah Tournament and Heritage Hall tournament. The Lions played in a tough district at Lindsay and made a very good showing. The Lions will return four starters and several lettermen and hope to have even a better year. There’s not one team in the state that doesn’t yell “we’re number one” but there was only one saying that on May 12 — the Lions! The ’79 edition of the Lions was expected to do well, but no one really knew how well. Compiling a record of 28-4 the Lions placed 3rd in the Guthrie tournament, won the Lindsay Tourney, and proceeded to march through the district, regional, and finally the state tournament in Tulsa. The team had to overcome a rain-out which forced them to play two games in one day and several team members were sick with the flu, but the state tournament was a one-time thing and the whole team rallied to give their best. The Lions placed seven on the all state tournament team and played the final game without one team member striking out. It was a day the school and community will remember — until next year, as the Lions will return seven starters, but will need some pitching help as they lost seniors Kevin Crane, Gordon Wilson, and all-state pitcher Charlie Birdsong. In growing, we have shared. In learning, we have found friendship In pride, we have gained appreciation. In dreaming, we have found hope. In living, we have found love. The Senior dass motto is an indication of the attitude of the 1979 graduating class in relation to feelings they share toward each other and feelings they have toward their school. This year has been a very busy one! The Senior dass began the year by winning First Place in the Homecoming Parade float contest with their float Dumbo! Seniors were very evident in all fields of endeavor as every major organization was headed by a Senior! Sponsors were Betty Lewis, Genelle Richey, and Donna Stokes. They contributed much to the high school activities and let everyone know that they were Proud Juniors. They decided to get to work this year and it paid off; they raised over 3000 dollars. Among the money-making projects were selling Sourball Candy, M M’s, having a car wash and bake sale, holding concession stands, and selling candy-grams. Their goal was to hold the best prom ever. There were outstanding Juniors this year in all activities, such as football, baseball, basketball, and many clubs. The Juniors were proud to have our homecoming float, “Pete’t Dragon,” win second place this year. One of the greatest events of all was receiving class rings and letting everyone know it. With his guidance we have learned such songs as: Patrol March and Trail West. We traveled to Norman to Contest and we had a rewarding time. Although we didn’t receive any rewards materially it was reward enough jsut to be able to compete. Our spring concert was an array of musical enjoyment both for the audience and band members. Freshman members are now looking forward to having such a wonderful year in High School. 100 UyziitC czHammon zzifiman c fttzndant d oxtia Pooj£.[[ 8t(i c f-ttzndant J2ua j dots, jtti xacis, c f-tiznctant oot[ja[[ cy fttzndan t± 101 Band Awards — C.
