t -l On a cold, blustery day in January 1981, USS BLAKELY sailed from her homeport of Charleston, South Carolina and began what was to be a five month deployment. Under the operational command of Commander Middle East Force, BLAKELY turned in a consistently superior performance conducting surveillance operations in the Persian Gulf. What follows in these pages is a pictorial history of the deployment . . .

CDR Norman J. PATTAFIOZZI is a native of Highland Park, Illinois and a graduate of Southern Illinois University, Carbondale, Illin- ois. CDR PATTAFlOZZI's inl- tial sea assignments were as the Engineering Officer in the USS JACANA IMSL-1951 and OinC PCF ISWIFTI COS- DIV 13 RVN. After attending Destroyer School, he served as the Engineering Officer in the USS WALLER IDD-4661 and USS JOHN S. McCAlN QDDG-36j. CDR PATTAROZZI then attended the Defense Intelligence School with a subsequent tour with the Ocean Surveillance and Fleconaissance Division of OPNAV. Following his OPNAV assignment, CDR PATTAROZZI served as Executive Officer in the USS GARCIA IFF-10403. After a brief assignment to a DOD Study Group, CDR PATTAR- OZZI attended the Command and Staff Course at the Naval War College. After gradua- tion, CDR PATTAROZZI, a proven subspecialist in intel- Iigence, was assigned to the Navy Field Operational Intel- ligence Office Detachment, Naval War College. Upon returning to sea duty, CDR PATTAFIOZZI assumed com- mand of the USS BLAKELY IFF-10721 in August 1979. 4 . - . A I .
