Schreadley United States Ship Blakely DE-1072 Named in honor of Captain Johnston Blakely, a hero of the War of 1812, and his great-grandnephew, Vice-Admiral Charles A. Blakely, BLAKELY is one of a new class of ocean escort destroyers especially designed to locate and destroy submarines. Two Navy ships were previously named in honor of Captain Johnston Blakely: Torpedo Boat 27 and Destroyer 150. USS BLAKELY was launched on 23 August 1969, at Avondale Shipyards, Inc., New Orleans, and was commissioned on 18 July 1970 at the Charleston Naval Shipyard. In 1971 the first Basic Point Defense Missile System installed on a destroyer was completed on BLAKELY, and in 1972 the ship received the Interim Surface to Surface Missile Capability CISSMCJ. BLAKELY has cruised twice to the Caribbean Sea, once to Northern Europe, and most recently to the Western Pacific. In September 1972, the ship represented the United States at the formal ceremony marking the turnover of the Swan Islands to the Republic of Honduras, and hosted the President of that Republic and senior members of his government on board. BLAKELY headed for the Western Pacific 1 December 1972. The ship transited the Panama Canal and proceeded to the ports of Manzanillo, Mexico, Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, Guam, and Subic Bay in the Philippines. From Subic Bay, BLAKELY sailed to the Tonkin Gulf where the ship occupied the northernmost station. Prior to BLAKELY's return home, the ship visited Kaohsiung, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Yokosuka, Japan, San Diego, California, and Panama City, Panama. .avi s Underway mb 972 Panama Canal Zone The first Step , I 4, JI, f X I Q , .0,,, ff ff 1 W ,f w,,f,g , If 4 ,M 2, 7 nwzwff 7 J I mfg, fymwgg Wffzzfff' if 2, W 4 f, , zfmffffz, ffi,e rf f f ,Mfff VW z.14!f,f,f,f X, f,U,fffWWQig, Eff f N 'f ,CTW-ff 4' GQ f I CAN'T BELIEVE I GOT UP AT 0500 FOR THIS!
