The sensational circus - a group of talented people practicing long, hard hours for each performance. Each act, from the parading elephants to the flying trapeze, contributes towards making the circus successful. There is an unique opportunity for every performer to shine. Each individual strives to better himself in order to enhance the group's achievement. The excitement of the entire production builds during each act leading up to the grand finale. The strong unity of The Blake Schools is similar to that of a circus in that an individual works hard for his personal success, but at the same time strives for the success of the school. Each year of participation offers experience and preparation needed for the following year. The excitement builds through the four high school years. At last, we become seniors and celebrate our experience. With integrity and positive self-concept, we move on to new endeavors. 1) The halls of ivy. 2) The male cheerleaders do some serious rousing. 3) Bouff contemplates the function of the next play 4) Amy Segal and Shannon Kennedy study on the front lawn. 5) Our Homecoming Queen, Kirsten Harrison. 6) Mrs. Stock and Mr Mersey promenade at Camp Warren. The incredible faculty-student bond adds to the close knit community. They interact with one another in an academic atmosphere and on the athletic fields. Most important, close relationships between students and faculty develop through group effort and cooperation Blake backs its students in all of their diverse interests and accomplishments. ( |M ning r With hove to Jane Rice We, the 1984 yearbook staff, dedicate this year's edition of Reflections with affection and respect to Mrs. Jane Rice. Jane Rice is a dedicated teacher who has served Northrop Collegiate School and The Blake Schools for more than twenty five years. Academic excellence and personal achievement are the hallmarks of all of her classes. She teaches a number of courses, ranging from Creative Writing Workship to Russian-Soviet Life. Each challenges her students intellectually, and solidly prepares them for college. She brings out creativity in her students and motivates them to express their thoughts in writing with clarity and style. Primarily through her efforts, the Advanced Placement English program was established at Northrop and continued at The Blake Schools. Jane Rice asks a lot of her students but she is even more demanding of herself, as she is also always a student, whether pursuing independent reading or attending courses and seminars at the University. Mrs. Rice is always very generous in offering her time for personal and academic attention. Her patience and her enthusiasm towards learning show through her sincere concern and interest in the lives of each of her students. In addition to her classroom teaching, Mrs. Rice has been the faculty advisor to Flash, the school's literary magazine, for a number of years. Under her leadership. Flash has become a respected, exemplary publication. Her character is unique, her genius admired. For being a devoted teacher to many, a scholar in the true sense of the word, and a friend to all, we thank you Mrs. Rice. 6 Dedication Dwkation 7 SENIORS... TAKE THE CENTER RING 10 Senior Weekend 2 Senior Weekend 11 Senior Weekend began as the busses were loaded for the long ride to Camp Warren. The Weekend was a time to get to know classmates better. Faculty members and students worked with one another, an aspect that made Senior Weekend beneficial to the whole school, not just the senior class. Senior Weekend was, in part, a time for accomplishment. Upon arrival at Camp Warren, the seniors were put to work clearing brush and branches from fallen trees; chopping, stacking, and hauling wood; and clearing paths. Each senior also participated in two dyads, discussions with another senior. In addition, the seniors set goals for their class and for themselves as individuals, and discussed how the class could influence the school in a positive way. Some of the important goals were to reach out in order to establish friendships with new people (thereby unifying the class), to re-establish the Blake Rousers Club as an all school organization, and to set an example for the younger classes by getting involved in the opportunities offered by the school. Seniors also pursued fun and relaxation. Popular activities included a mini-olympics, a very successful square dance, a bonfire, some impromptu and very funny skits, and the film, Night of the Living Dead. The setting and timing of the weekend could not have been better, though the weather left some unsuspecting seniors out in the cold. The weekend was an incredible success for the class of 1984, and got the year off to a great start! 1) Senk rs unite at Camp Warren 2) Emily Sprague, Ruth Borgeson and Carrie Levin relax by the lake. 3) Dale Curtiss is the M.S. murderer. 4) Andrea Wallack and Claire Buchwald find a new friendship. HOMECOMING 1983 1J Mount ofmnK Homecoming 13 14 Homecommg BEARREL ’EM DOWN! 6 The 1983 Blake Homecoming can best be described in just a few words, a huge success! With the slogan Bearrel 'em down, Blakies demonstrated their spirit through clothing corresponding to the different days; Inside-out Day, Tropical Day and Pajama Day. The Bonfire on Thursday night was also a big hit. The boys' soccer team topped the night with their innovative skit, but the football skit wasn't far behind. This year's Homecoming royalty were freshman attendants Annie Cabbert and Stewart Crosby, sophomore attendants Sara Weinberg and Adam Frisch, junior attendants Laura Gabbert and Mark Mortenson, and senior attendants Kate Heegaard and Gordon Newman. King and Queen of the parade were David Ramsay and Kirsten Harrison. On Friday morning, the walls of the school were shaken by the great enthusiasm displayed at the pepfest, in anticipation of the football game. Although the Bears lost, the revival of the Blake Rousers Club and the addition of male cheerleaders kept the excitement going. All the sports teams shared in the festivities again this year Boys' soccer and girls' swimming both won, as did the volleyball team. The tennis team also pulled through with an awesome 6-1 victory over Edina. The week finished strongly with an amazingly large turn-out for the dance Friday night featuring the band Limited Warranty. This enthusiastic participation is what made Blake 1983 Homecoming a success for the whole school. 1) John Traub drums a Blake bear beat 2) Kirsten Harrison leads the cheer. 3) Cathy and Laura - sungoddesses in October. 4) Liz Rasmussen and Cathy Everly in night attire 5) Hawaiian beach bums. 6) Lisa, Seth and Tom .. up, up and away! Homecoming 15 A PRIME FAEE PEAT Enthusiasm and dedication joined together with a love for the theater to create a fall show that was one of the most memorable in Blake's history. The Prime of Miss lean Brodie, directed by Jean Blake, consisted of only ten cast members. These ten became close friends and devoted an entire month of their energy to make a successful play. Their efforts were certainly well rewarded! Large audiences inspired the cast to give exceptional performances. Laughter, romance, and blood curdling screams filled the auditorium throughout the three performances. The cast was drawn from the senior, junior, and freshman classes. Senior Deborah Farber, completely absorbed in her role of lean Brodie, was opposed by the funny headmistress Miss Mackay, played by senior Tori Bush. Michelle Conlin, a junior, portrayed Sandy with credibility at every moment, while Alan Lonstein, also a junior, was Teddy Lloyd, the artist, searching for the love he couldn't have. Tim Francis, Mary-Catherine Menikheim, Juliet Nelson, David Ogden, Rachel Ratner, and Caprice Luedke completed the outstanding cast. All the characters were believable. Some were easy to love, others easy to hate, and a few provoked love and hate at the same time. Despite all the hard work, the show wouldn't have been possible without magnificent Jean Blake as director. Her patience and enthusiasm pulled everyone together. The large crew worked with Rick Polenek to build the beautiful set. Lights were designed by Terry Carlson and run by Tom Quaintance, and Mark Peterson coordinated the sound. Finally, Nina Hale, as student director, kept everything in order to make the show successful and acclaimed by all. 1) Miss Jean Brodte's students write a letter. 2) Teddy and Jean are in love. 3) Mary Katherine is Sister Helen. 4) David Ogden becomes angry 5) Michelle Conlin confronts Jean 6) Senior Deborah Farber stars as Miss Jean Brodie 16 Fall Play wu Standing Room Only for the 1983 T alent Review In order to raise money for the Blake musical groups, the Arts Department sponsors a student Talent Revue each year. This year, the show included singers, instrumentalists, jugglers, and prose readers. All groups displayed an abundance of talent that resulted in an entertaining evening and an effective fund raiser. The Talent Revue provides the school with its first glimpse of its seven singing groups: Concert Choir, Mixed Company, Womens' Chorus, All That Jazz, Mens' Glee Club, Blaker's Dozen, and Eight Is Enough. Eight Is Enough is a new group made up of junior girls. These musical groups are led by Music Director Ginny Claessens, and accompanied by composer pianist Severin Behnin. Sev also led and organized a new group for instrumentalists. They also made their debut at the Talent Show. In addition to the singing groups, there were many individual acts, including several dramatic readings by Jane Rice's Creative Writing Workshop students. The Freshmen exhibited a stunning amount of talent in a juggling act, a humorous rendition of Green Grow the Rushes Ho, and a beautiful James Taylor piece sung by Nicole Chapman and Matt Segal. Students entertained the audience with various songs, such as My Favorite Things from The Sound of Music, You're Never Fully Dressed Without a Smile from Annie, That's What I Like About You,” by The Romantics. A dance featuring the rock band The Abstracts ended the evening. Judging from the large enthusiastic audiences, the 1983 Talent Revue was a success, both artistically and financially. 1) Men's Glee Club displays new talent 2) Juniors Rachel Rainer and Laura Deikel are all smies. 3) Junior Dave Crosby and his cello add a touch of class to the Talent Review • ) M.C.'s Kibe Ebin and Michelle Confcn introduce Dozen with enthusiasm 5) Sev Behnen and Junior Scott Tankenoff jam on the ivories 6) Sophomores Lisa Schmoker and Beth Hodder sing atxnjt some of their favorite things 18 Talent Review Talent Review 19 Winter Concert and Art Show Dazzle Audience On Friday, December 9th, the Blake Musical groups displayed their talent at the 1983 Winter Concert and Art Show. Music Director Ginny Claessens put forth her best effort to make the concert one of the finest ever. The audience was enchanted as they were surrounded by angelic voices in the opening number One Voice by Barry Manilow. Two new groups made successful debutes during the second half of the program. A new singing group, Eight Is Enough, consisting of eight junior girls and the Blake Instrumental Ensemble directed by Severin Behnen, made exceptional appearances. During intermission, spectators enjoyed the works of Blake's hardworking artists. All of the choirs joined together for a most dramatic finale by singing Praise the Lord and a Hayden piece. Congratulations were offered in the new wing at a warm reception. Director Ginny Claessens deserves sincere thanks for all of her hard work. 20 Winter Concert and Art Show 3 1) New Iazz Ensemble jams with Sev Behnen, their director. 2) 80 voices from the three choirs join together for an incredible finale 3) Juniors Wendy Ellis and libby Carrier - one-fourth of Eight Is Enough. 4) Freshman Andrew Gamson. Physics students Peter Altman and Brian Hakim carefufly work through a complex assignment 22 Technology The computer age has hit Blake. The impact of these micro-processors with their huge memories and tiny silicon chips has been felt at Blake in many different ways. Many students spend countless hours of their free time jamming or hacking on one of the twenty computers shared between the Upper and Middle schools. These computer hacks may be playing games, writing programs, or even (and there is no way for us to know this) plugging into the admissions offices at various colleges and universities. Many Blake students are introduced to computers during their freshman year, when a week or more of math class is devoted to familiarizing the student with the computer and learning basic programming techniques. Further computer work in the classroom is provided by the elective Computer Math. Here emphasis is placed on solving math problems with the help of the computer, although some word processing skills are also taught. Computers have also been integrated into some other classes, including American Culture and Functions. The Science Department also uses computers extensively, giving students a chance to work on extra problems outside of class. Computers become especially important to Blake students in their junior and senior years, when they may be used to help the students prepare for the dreaded SAT's. Finally, computers are not only used by Blake students while at school, but also at home. Many families own personal computers and students are using them to play games, write papers, and even teach themselves how to type. Yes, computers are now an integral part of Blake (and don't forget all those calculators). In the future, one can expect them to be used even more extensively, with many more applications. Technology 23 Communication Bridges the Gap Can you imagine a world without communication? It is incomprehensible. Modern society has evolved to a point where the ability to express one's ideas effectively is a necessity. In order to fill this need, Blake offers a wide range of communication courses. From the competitive nature of Varsity Debate to the introductory course of Speech Theater. the Blake student is required to choose two semester courses to fulfill the requirement. Speech Theater, taught by Jeanne Blake, is geared towards familiarizing the underclassman with public expression including both impromptu and written speeches, and theatrical monologues. The importance of this class is that it lightens, if not dissipates, the initial stage fright” which inhibits us aH. There are other options available to fulfill Blake's speech requirement. Many students prefer the challenge, excitement, and research that accompanies debate. The three levels of expertise -Novice, Junior Varsity, and Varsity - coached by Barbara Mraz and Greg Dawson, have competed with teams in Minnesota, and around the five-state area. The extent of our teams' talent is evident through everything from Tonka trucks, silver platters, and crystal platters in the west end of Northrop. Speech Activities and Acting and Directing are two other popular artistic outlets and vehicles of expression offered at Blake. While Speech Activities classes also compete, the Acting and Directing classes are geared toward theatrical performance, requiring participating students to help with, and act in the fall and spring shows. As a junior or a senior, one is required to complete a communications course taught by either Barbara Mraz or Greg Dawson. The unique aspect of this class' curriculum is that each student is required to present speech before the entire upper school. The thought of standing in front of over four hundred people and talking for what seems an eternity might induce one to flirt with the idea of leaving the school. However, contrary to popular belief, the dreaded assembly speech is beneficial to both the audience and the speaker. Each student has five to ten minutes to present a subject he feels is important in a way a written research paper never could. Considering all the options, the Blake communications program is the epitome of personal expression, whether on the competitive level, or on the stage. 24 Communication 5 1) Debater Jason Myers emphasizes a vial point. 2) Through Acting and Directing, seniors Roger Pauly and Dave Lyman and juniors Chris Ross and Juliet Nelson assume their true identities. 3) Debate coach Greg Dawson discusses the game plan for the upcoming tournament. A) Junior Ann LinviB incorporates eye contact in her assembly speech. 5) Seniors Jon Traub and Henry Hale search through their extensive notecards in preparation for a key defense. Communication 25 26 AP. A.P. Programs Offer Challenge Advanced Placement, or A.P. for short, what exactly does that mean? A.P courses usually operate on a higher level than regular courses. Their primary focus is to prepare students for the Advanced Placement examinations in May. Performing well on these exams means, for most, credit for a similar course in college. A high score on an A.P. exam makes some students exempt from the introductory level college work in that subject. Conceivably, by doing well in an A.P course, the student may start electives in college earlier. Depending on the number of A.P courses taken by any one student, he may also apply for advanced standing. An Advanced Placement course is offered to that junior or senior who wants the challenge of doing more work independently. The student's choices for A.P. coursework include English, Calculus, Chemistry, Biology, Physics, German, French, Spanish, and U.S. History. The Advanced Placement program was initiated twenty years ago at Northrop by Jane Rice. She met with six juniors once a week for an extra class, and as seniors, the same girls continued to do so. The only A.P. course available then for Northrop girls was English. When Northrop and Blake merged, the Advanced Placement program was expanded, and one could take the courses for partial credit. The A.P program at Blake continues to expand, as is shown by the addition of A.P Chemistry, Biology, and Physics to the curriculum this year. The function of the A.P. courses is to provide stimulus to follow the collegiate pattern independently. The goal is for the individual to think originally, and to be able to see the many approaches to every math problem or French composition. Using one's own ideas is stressed, as one is encouraged to abandon black and white, pat answers. The A.P courses are designed as extras, as well as enrichment for the intellectually elite. They do, however, come hand in hand with plenty of extra homework, and one often hears an A.P. English student exclaim, ”1 have to read 200 pages of James Joyce by Friday! Despite the extra work, students seem to feel that A.P. courses are worthwhile because they are excellent preparation for college work The A.P. program at Blake is another example of the school's commitment to excellence in education. 1) A competent senior works her way through the challenge of an A.P. exam. 2) Senior Rich Davis reviews for an indepth section test in A P. Biology with Mr K's help. 3) Senior A.P. English teacher John Hatch instructs his students expecting college level performance. 4) Seniors Peter Altman, Bill Malecki. Brian Hakim. Rick Abuzzahab and Steve Johanson are a few of the advanced physicists 5) Junior Chris Allen contemplates the plot of The French Lieutenant's Woman AP. 27 Blake in the Community An excellent education does not end at the classroom door, but extends beyond the school encouraging students to get involved in and learn from the community. The Blake faculty therefore hopes to instill in its students an understanding and awareness of the community that surrounds them. Through various courses and committees, a Blake student is encouraged to become involved in the community outside the school. One of the many courses Blake offers encouraging community involvement is Medical Biology. During the first semester, Med Bio students are required to work two hours each week at Park Nursing and Convalescent Center During the second semester, students work in the emergency room at Hennepin County Medical Center for twelve nours each month. The class also works on a Death and Dying” unit. The students visit Lakewood Cemetery and a local funeral nome to become oriented with the subject of death. Speakers from associations around the city come to Blake to speak to the class about issues such as abortion and transexuality. Extensive instruction in CPR and first aid is also offered. Another class that Blake offers involving the Minneapolis community and world issues is Minority Studies. Minority Studies deals with the problems between men and women, blacks and immigrants coming to the United States, and various religious minorities. The students increase their awareness and knowledge of minorities within our community. In the past, Ms. Canter has guided discussions by introducing topics ot current world concern and has then let the students pursue these topics on their own in the form of a Semester Project to gain a clearer perspective of the different groups of people in the Minneapolis Community. Every year, Mrs. Solon takes the Economics class to the Grain Exchange in order to have a first hand experience with the supply and demand theory. The Politics class, taught by Mr Rod Anderson, seeks to become familiar with tne political process by participating in it. The students will participate in the precinct caucus of tne candidate of their choice, and, since all of the members of the class will be eighteen by the spring, will become involved by voting. In addition to the classes mentioned, many other classes take advantage of outside speakers and other assets in the community, such as tne Walker Art Center, and the Guthrie Theater. An organization that brings the community to Blake is the Social Action Committee, a body of the Forum The Social Action Committee brings outside speakers to address the school in assembly. The Committee is also involved in such activities as the Nuclear Freeze march, which took place during the fall. In the future, the committee hopes to organize a project that would enable students to aid the community by doing odd jobs such as painting and cleaning different parts of the city. Because of the classes and organizations that Blake offers its students, we have a wider, more informed view of the world. Mr Danielson s infamous Chemistry labs, the tenth grade research papers . the list goes on. Blake students have an endless stream of opportunities to write both inside and outside of the dassroom The many dimensions of Blake’s English department provide opportunities for students to expand their abilities. In the ninth and tenth grades, writing activities are stressed to prepare underclassmen for elective courses in their junior and senior years, instructing them in grammar, spelling, vocabulary, organization, and usage Although eleventh and twelfth grade electives stress reading highly, correct writing skills are expected. One strong writing program at Blake is the Creative Writing Workshop taught by lane Rice. The participating juniors and seniors partake in class discussions and critical analyses of their written fiction, poetry, and dramatic monologues The class publishes its own magazine, to which each student contnbutes equally Guest writers such as authors and poets and invited to speak to the class, while some Blake students choose to read their own work publically. While Blake students write the most in English courses, instructors in other areas stress writing as well Students are required to write papers for Social Studies, Sciences, and advanced Language classes However, these classes involve different forms of writing, like research papers, lab eports, and daily journals. Journalistic writing opportunities also flourish in the Blake curriculum Reflections, published annually, includes a great deal of written copy, and Spectrum, published monthly, includes informative, newsworthy, and entertaining articles Spectrum also provides an opportunity for the semester long Journalism class to get first hand experience with publishing a paper. Blake's Sterary magazine. flash, published three times a year, gives students yet another chance to demonstrate their talent m prose and poetry works. Blake stresses the importance of developing the ska to write, and gives each student endless opportunities to excell in this ability As a result of these experiences, the strength of our writing curriculum is continuously reinforced by Blake graduates' success in college writing Mr. WAam Fischer, the head of Blake's English department, expresses his views on Blake writing: We realize that the best writing is a combination of what we experience and what we think about those experiences we believe that our students are exceptionally wefl qualified for writing in college Writing 31 Languages Aren't Foreign at Blake For those of you who sometimes complain about the three year language requirement at Blake, there is a logical reason behind it. The Blake administration believes that students should learn a language other than their own because of the international aspects of society Otherwise, one has a limited view of the world The requirement is for three years instead of two so that the student can enjoy the language and decide whether or not to go on from there. In short, the philosophy is that m order to be educated, one must understand more than their own language and culture The best way to learn about another culture is to learn its language To help the student fulfil the language requirement. Blake offers a wide variety of courses m four languages: French, Spanish. German, and Russian For first, second and third year students, the curriculum for these courses is fairly similar, concentrating on grammar and history The variety exists when one completes the requirement and starts taking electives. The choices range from bterature oriented courses such as Kaleidoscope. Germany - Yesterday and Today, and Teatro Hispanoamencano, to a French elective. French for Travelers. The French. Spanish, and German programs extend through to fifth year courses that prepare students for the Advanced Placement examinations in May. Aside from attending classes, some students elect to compete in written and oral contests Seniors Debbie Thomas. Jenny Larson, Lisa Kane, Julie Ebin. Kirsten Harrison, and Greg Sands, juniors Seth Rierson. and David Ogden, and sophomores Josh Marrow and Alice Levitt are among those who find statewide competition in French rewarding. Other students continue studying their language during the summers by attending Concordia Language Villages. Debby Farber has attended the Spanish camp, while Ruth Borgeson and Henry Hale have both attended the Russian camp. Besides taking German, French. Spanish, and Russian at Blake, Kirsten Harrison has spent nine summers at Concordia, seven concentrating on German, and two on French. Last summer, she studied at the University at Grenoble in France in the language and linguistics department. A few seniors have chosen to incorporate languages into their senior project Debby Farber. who took fifth year Spanish as a junior, is planning to teach Spanish at Woods Academy for part of fourth quarter. .Mark Abramowitz will spend two and a half months with a family in a suburb of Paris going to a French high school. Many students have participated in school sponsored trips to France, Mexico, Russia, and Germany. Two students spent last year abroad. Becky Gdlette stayed with a family in Paris and studied at the American School in Paris for her junior year. Tuula Sinks spent the year in Germany attending an all girls school. Both found the experience rewarding, not only because they gained greater facility with their respective languages, but also because they were able to observe and be part of another culture temporarily. As is evident, while a few students may complain about the language requirement, many more students take advantage of what they have learned in their studies. Indeed, the study of a foreign language is an integral part of the Blake education. 1 32 Languages 3 1) Madame Antoine instructs her A P French Literature class. 2) Mr Ritchte gets the attention of his Russian students. 3) Freshmen Anne MacMiSan and Libby Nelson await an answer from Kelly Morrison in a Spanish II class. 4) Senior Charlie Wagener enjoys the recent edition of a Spanish paper. 5) German teacher Heinz Otto reviews freshman Yvette Chanco's test. As the clock struck midnight, a chill ran up America's spine. This was the year 1984. George Orwell's year. Had his pessimistic predictions come true? America began a self evaluation. Is our society a product of technology? Those cameras that watch us in the 7-11 stores say yes but the fact remains that we are still a society of individuals, unlike Orwell's Oceania. We can still disagree with our government's actions. We can still elect our government officials. We have the freedom to come and go as we please. But still the threat of being taken over by technology hovers over us. How do we avoid its domination? Emotion is the key. We must keep feeling pride when our Olympic athletes take the gold. We must keep feeling anger when the government offers our troops to warring nations. We must keep feeling joy at the birth of a child. So far, we've been able to do this. As a result, we've defied Orwell's predictions and remained human beings, in spite of our ever progressing technology. uaSiVai'rMraiosasLL 0J President says world safer now 1984 35 Forum Encourages Awareness The 1983-84 Forum focused on encouraging awareness of the world outside of the Blake Schools. The Social Action Committee was established to fulfill this purpose. By inviting assembly speakers from the Minneapolis area, the committee hoped to increase interaction between the community and the school. The Forum also passed two new clubs: The Blake Rousers Club and The Blake Outing Club. A demand for open communication between the Forum and the school was expressed early in the year. Forum offered endless opportunities throughout the year for students to participate in school Forum affairs. Forum included a monthly column in the school newspaper to keep the students and faculty up to date on important issues. Forum publicized the weekly minutes for all to view. By holding meetings in the multi-purpose room, Forum encouraged an open and relaxed atmosphere. Underclassmen received more responsibility as well. The goal of the 1983-1984 Spectrum staff is to produce an informative, attractive, and easy-to-read newspaper with timely and interesting stories. The success in meeting this goal has been a result of the dedication, hard work, and enthusiasm of this year's staff. Working under tight deadlines generated a feeling of camaraderie as each staff member contributed his best efforts to the creation of an outstanding publication. Under the leadership of Faculty Advisor, Darrel McAnnany, Editor-In-Chief Brian Goldfus, and Associate Editor David Isaacs, the staff began the year by concentrating on the paper's appearance. The result of this effort was a consistent and attractive layout and design. The staff also focused its attention on maintaining uniformly better copy, high quality photos, and diverse subjects. Despite the time commitments, often involving late evenings and Sundays, the staff met the challenge of publishing a top-quality paper with enthusiastic participation. Front Row:). Druskin; D. The staff is a dedicated group of students who willingly use their own time to put out a quality magazine that will be judged against other high school publications nation-wide. Flash is always certain to fair well against other competitors because of the staff's contributions and enthusiasm. Editor Amy Myers and Assistant Editor Sarah Bishop led the group in the planning and production of the yearbook. Every Wednesday night at 6:30, yearbookers trudged through snow, sleet, and ice to devote endless hours to the success of this publication. Last minute deadlines often called for Davanni's pizza runs in the wee hours of the morning. Many Saturday afternoons were filled with frustrating layouts, spectacular artwork, and long, long copy. The work paid off as reflected” in this year's superb yearbook. The staff sought elements of change in order to better portray and capture the student life at Blake. More space was created by replacing the faculty candids with Camera Art photos. These extra pages are devoted to expressing Blake's successful and unique academic features. The rotation of color also added a new dimension to this year's book. Innovative layouts erased monotony, while eye-catching artwork added variety. We feel the changes made in Reflections vividly express the events of the 1983-1984 school year, and will provide you with a book of timeless memories. Social Committee Headed by Julian Jarvis, Karin Mesna and faculty advisor Frank Sachs, the Blake 1983-84 social committee is made up of many dedicated students. The function of the social committee is to promote an exciting atmosphere outside of the normal school day. The duties of the social committee include: helping decorate dances, choosing bands, baking foods, and publicizing. Because it is a large group, the members are divided into sub-committees. The social committee is a group which encourages participation by everyone. Overall the social committee provided students the chance to lay back and enjoy a better school life. Fun Club The Blake Fun Club is an organization that arranges fun and interesting activities for students to attend. October's agenda included the All-Star Wrestling Extravaganza that over a fourth of the school attended. January was highlighted by a spectacular Movie Night. The Fun Club encouraged excitement within the school by supplying balloons at Homecoming and by sponsoring an Ice Cream Social at the Spring Forum Fest. Membership is open to anyone with FUN ideas. Debate Zoology Club Both the Varsity and Junior Varsity debate teams had successful seasons. The Varsity team consisted of four seniors: Farzad Alvi, Jon Traub, Henry Hale and Jason Myers. They worked well together to create a superpower threat to ? region. Trips to Duluth, Grand Rapids and Mankato in Minnesota highlighted the season. A trip to Chicago for a debate tournament at Northwestern University was the pinnacle of excitement. A win at a tournament sponsored by last year's National Champions was an example of the success story this Blake's team had to offer. Coach Gregory Dawson encouraged both teams in their debating this year's issue of reforming criminal court procedures. The Zoology Club is different from any other club at Blake. It is not a social club nor a fund raising club. The Zoology Club is designed to teach interested students about raising and caring for various types of animals. Originally named the Herpitology Club, which died out several years ago, the Zoology Club cares for hamsters, pigeons, and tarantulas as well as reptiles. Though its number is small, its members are dedicated to the care of each animal. Each year the Blake zoo grows, adding new diversity to the scope of the club. This year the club hopes to add an iguana to their collection. Front row: I Traub, F. Alvi, H. Hale. J. Myers, C. Bochwald Second row: A Phillips, A. Capen. $. Outing Club Library Club The Blake Outing Club is a new organization this year. Founded by seniors Walter Barry and David Lyman, with help from Julian Jarvis, the club has established itself as active and popular. The purpose of the B.O.C. is to offer the Blake students the chance to enjoy the outdoors, learn some back-country camping skills, and increase awareness of some environmental concerns. Some events included a canoe trip down the St. Croix River, a slide show given by an Outward Bound spokesperson, a visit to the Omnitheater, and a cross-country ski trip to Mr. Knudson's house on Lake Minnetonka. The B.O.C. even plans to take a ten day expedition to the Grand Canyon in June. Thanks to all the faculty sponsors’ and advisor Mr. Sachs, the B.O.C. built a foundation for the years to come. I'll bet most of you thought that the Library Club was dead, right? Wrong! It is alive and kicking! Without the help of its devoted members, the Library would be very confusing. Each week the members of the Library Club devote forty minutes of their free time to help the library staff and to maintain the upkeep of our great new facilities. These funds are then donated to organizations or activities that require financial backing. Although the sport of cricket has not remained one of the clubs activities, the Cricket Club has earned its popularity through various other services and traditions. Although not big money makers, donut and bake sales are always well appreciated! Those three or four raised-glazed'' and fudge brownies are life-savers for those who get the hungries during the long school day. The big money” comes from the ever-popular Kissing Elf Cards every December. The Elf Cards, unique to Blake, are great fun for students to send, deliver, and receive as tidings of good cheer. Due to an extremely successful fiscal year, MCC has shared its wealth with the Social Committee and the newly formed Outing Club. Overall MCC's contributions, both economically and socially, are an essential element in the microcosm of Blake. International Club This year's International Club, led by senior copresidents Lynn Sherman and Debbie Tnomas, and faculty advisors Kay Solon and Nelly Blackburn, planned to dispell the reputation of being only a food club. In an attempt to create a more aware student body, they started off the year with a symposium featuring a film about a Hmong family trying to assimilate into American culture. This was followed by a clothing drive for the Hmong community in Minneapolis. Future plans for tne club are aimed at increasing the awareness of foreign language and culture in the Blake community. Chorus sang a wide repertoire of music including Renaissance, Hebrew, and French pieces. Chorus oerformed in the Talent Show and in the Winter and Spring concerts. This year's president was Laura Deikel. Mary-Katherine Menikheim was he vice-president. Despite the lack of Seniors, Chorus had a very successful year. In addition to performing at all school concerts, the group performs at out-of-school events. Members of All that Jazz enjoy the responsibility of selecting their own pieces, as well as the close friendships that arise from the small group environment. Liveliness, especially on stage, is of great importance to the singers, and the excitement and enthusiasm the singers display add cheer to the choral events throughout the year. Despite having only three Juniors and no Seniors, the group started the year out strong, and consistently improved. The Glee Club not only performed in the Talent Review, the Winter Concert and the Spring Concert, but it also gave a number of concerts at nursing homes and various downtown locations. The highlight of the year was a four day trip to Kansas City in mid-February. Despite the fact that there are only two returning members from last year, Mixed Company had a great year thanks to the exceptional talent of its new members. Mixed Company has been a choral tradition at Blake for several years and will continue to be for many more. Concert Choir Under the direction of Cinny Claessens and accompanist Severin Behnen, the 1983-1984 Concert Choir boasted one of the strongest groups of Blake singers ever. This year, juniors comprised about two-thirds of the group, as there was only a handful of returning seniors. The Choir performed exceptionally well at all three of the school performances, singing pieces ranging from the mellow sounds of Simon and Garfunkel, to classical Haydn. In May, the choir took a trip to Winnepeg, and sang for many groups. The rousing medley Godspell, featuring wonderful choreography, was an excellent finale of this year's choral season. They experienced very high and some equally low moments. The season started with four straight victories, including a double overtime triumph over De La Salle and subsequent victories over S.P.A., St. Anthony and Minnehaha. Later, the Bears faced eventual conference champs Mahtomedi, who pulled away to win the game in the second half. Partially due to the injuries suffered by many key players, three additional losses followed, including a devastating defeat by Cannon Falls in a mudfest. In the final game against defending state champions Brooklyn Center, the Bears played their best to achieve a 26-20 come from behind victory. Brooklyn Center returned the opening kickoff for a touchdown and had another in the next five minutes, but Blake came back to trail 14-6 at the end of the half. After the teams traded touchdowns, changing the score to 20-12 in the fourth quarter, the Blake football squad fought back for two more touchdowns and a victory. This win left the team with a record of five wins and four losses. The season was considered an even greater success when tricaptains Greg Sands and David Ramsay were named to the all-conference team and David Isaacs, Joe McGovern, and tri-captain Andrew Fraley received all-conference honorable mention. The 1983 Boys' Varsity soccer team was a potent combination of both rookies” and veterans,” so strong that they finished better than any Blake team since the early 1970's. The team played proficiently, wisely, and had a good overall sense of the game. Led by cocaptains Mark Lucas and David Lyman, the team rallied to accomplish such amazing feats as beating Minneapolis Southwest 2-0, and sweeping Minnehaha for the first time in Blake history. With two All-Conference Honorable Mention keepers (Tim Francis and David Mortenson), and outstanding string of backs, an All-Conference halfback line (Mark Lucas, Kevin Meeks, and David Lyman), and an awesome forward line, the team finished with a ranking of second in the conference, and of seventh in the State. We plunged through all opposition, finishing the season with an incredible 10-1 record, defeated only by St. Anthony who went on to place second in state. The swimmers also accomplished their goals at the State level. Six swimmers and one diver, comprising two relays and four individual events went on to the state meet. As this was almost half the team. Coach Theilen was visibly impressed. Unfortunately, the divers had a bit of a slow start, as only two of them were returning at the varsity level, and also due to the fact that diving coach Bruce Hunstad was temporarily unable to coach, as the result of a motorcycle accident. Luckily, Bruce soon returned to the poolside and the divers' performances improved. Despite the pain of the long hours spent in the pool, the agony of the morning weight workouts, and the horror of weigh-ins, this year's team had fun! A highlight of the season was the annual meet in Eau Claire, Wisconsin. This year, the team spent the night in a Holiday Inn before the meet. Needless to say, after staying up all night laughing and eating, the performances were not quite up to par, but then, what is more important, winning or having fun. With the encouragement and support of Captains Barb Kirshbaum and Tori Bush, the awesome team seemed very capable of both. Through the efforts of Corky Carl and a few interested wrestlers, an unofficial cooperative team was finally organized with Breck. Since the merger was unofficial, Blake wrestlers were allowed to practice with the Breck team and participate in their meets, but the points they earned did not contribute to the overall score. The Breck-Blake team consisted of four wrestlers from Breck and eleven from Blake, filling all but three weight categories. Since three classes were not filled, the other teams were given six free points. Therefore, the scoring did not always represent the ability of the team. As this was the first wrestling team, Blake had virtually no experience, except Josh Marrow and Art Hickok, both of whom had previously wrestled with the Minneapolis Park Board. The young team was led by two rookie seniors, Rick Abuzzahab and Brooks Larson, and coached by Pat Arens, a student at the University of Minnesota. Mr. Sachs added the needed aspects of authority and respect to the team. Good wrestling requires strength, quickness, endurance, determination, and the mental attitude to wrestle as hard as possible for six minutes. Although this year's wrestlers did not always win, they strove to embody these qualities, and as a result, improved dramatically throughout the season. It is hoped that in the years to come, wrestling will become one of the strongest features of Blake Athletics, Front:) Knutson, M Obermeyer. S. Robinson, ). Marrow, Coach -- F. Sachs. Led by head coach Patti Soderberg and co-captains Debbie Thomas and Anne Sachs, the 1983 Volleyball team had their most successful season in five years. With only four returning varsity players, the team was very new, and the beginning of the season was devoted to learning positioning and improving basic skills. After defeating SPA early in the season, the players were excited about how well they had learned to play together, and were optimistic about the rest of the season. Subsequent victories, including a long, hard, homecoming match against Farmington kept team spirit high, and soon, as fans began to come to cheer the team on, the players realized that everybody was their friend! Finishing the season with a respectable 8-11 record, the women can look back and realize that all the grueling hours of jumping rope and running bears were worth it. Senior setter Debbie Thomas was elected to the All-Conference team, while Anne Sachs was voted MVP and jenny Larson voted MIP. The team was led by a group of veteran seniors, including cocaptains Robb johnson and Joe McGovern, and was backed up by a fine group of juniors. Coaches Rollie Johnson and Steve Johnson had high hopes in the beginning of the season for the conference championship, but suffered a couple of close defeats. They finished the year strongly by avenging an earlier loss to Farmington by beating them 51-45. Subsequent victories over Centennial and Cannon Falls helped the team to finish second in the conference. The team was seeded third in the district and went a long way in playoff action. Front: C. Boys' Basketball 71 We'll Tumble for Ya! With the addition of a new floor mat and new leotards, the 1983-84 gymnastics team strove to live up to its reputation as the best in the state. It proved to be a rebuilding year, with sophomores Kate Hyde and Katie Loken filling the open varsity positions left by last year's graduating seniors. The small varsity team, composed of five all-around gymnasts, improved significantly throughout the season, reaching their goal score of 120 at a home meet against Farmington. Despite close calls due to Cully's wild driving, the team also performed well at an invitational in Mound. Coached by Jim Rasmussen and Blake gymnastics vet Libby Forbes, the gymnasts placed fourth in both the Conference Tourney and in the sub-regions meet. Although the team did not advance to regions. Barb Kirshbaum, Cully Nordby, and Debbie Thomas, the three captains and All Conference gymnasts, advanced individually and performed exceptionally well. Late Wendy's runs gave tne needed energy for tough practices, while videotapes of their routines helped them learn by seeing themselves and provided many Fast Times” for the gymnastics team. During practice, the team flipped and twisted to the tunes of Prince and Michael Jackson, but their all-time favorite was, you guessed it. They d d so with a stylish, and impressive conference record of 11-1, with their only loss being to Centennial 5-4 in overtime. The team began the season highly ranked, and with great expectations. The season opened with an exciting 4-3 comeback victory over Bloomington Jefferson, a team which Blake hadn't beaten in six years Following this the team had a let down and lost two early non-conference games, leaving them with a 6-2 record entering the season. Head Coach Ric Drill-Mellum and assistant coach Tom Byers convinced the team that they shoukl settle for nothing less than the best. Overcoming many injuries, the team pulled together and won many tough games. With a goal of improving every game, and an entire season focusing on the playoffs, the team finally began to play up to its potential, ending the season with an overall record of 19-4. First row: T. The scores do not fully reflect the close, exciting games the team played. Several half time scores against the top conference teams had only 6-8 point spreads! At the close of February, the team's depth was marked by the fact that each player was as capable as the next to participate in a game situation. Coaches Bill Marton and Tom Palm provided supportive enthusiasm both on and off the court. Despite the conference record, the team members enjoyed themselves immensely. Injuries peppered the season, but did not hinder spirit, unity, determination nor talent. Even though this year boasted one of the bitterest winters in history, the Alpine ski team fought it with strength and enthusiasm. There was a high level of talent on both the girls' and boys' teams, and the level of achievement was equal to, if not higher than that of previous seasons. Much of this success was due to the expertise brought to the team by coaches Bruce Yonehiro and Tony Olin. Their outstanding training helped individuals on the teams to improve more than any past team. Despite the loss of team captains Craig Swanson and Andrea Wallack due to knee injuries, the team had a successful season. Continuing her tradition of excellence, Libby Carrier skiied her way to the state meet where she placed thirteenth in fierce competition. Sophomores Adam Frisch and Senior Steve Hartwig also had good seasons. Despite this setback, the team was able to pull through the season with a number of improved and successful swimmers. We got off to a good start with the 24 hour swim marathon just before the regular season began. Led by tri-captains Todd Poseley, Fritz Rahr, and wild Bill Cullen, the team faced and overcame many challenges as it muscled its way through some close meets. Practices proved to be just as difficult as ever, with the added weight workouts. Extra yardage in the mornings made practice even more exhausting. With encouragement from coaches John Thomas and Bruce Hunstad, and a little help from the llama, we made it through the tough but rewarding season, only to prove once again that we may be small but we've got it where it counts. For the boys, it was a difficult and often unsteady year The support of the four returning varsity seniors and strong skiing by underclassmen provided for a solid group of skiers full of team spirit. Although the boys consistently gave it their all, both in effort and in attitude, they were caught in the toughest region in the state, giving little hope for competition on the state level. The boys ended their season on a positive note, however, thankful for their experiences and their achievements. The girls varsity ski team, comprised of freshman Ann Bokman, juniors Amy Anderson, Liz Barnwell, Tara Gustilo, Katherine Wittenberg, and senior captain Liz Bokman, with the help of alternates Allison Capen, Nina Hale, and Andrea Lanoux, was the first girls team to advance to the state meet in five years where they placed sixth. Not only was the girls team the fastest in the region, but it was also noted for having the coolest suits, and for being the most hyper. The strong camaraderie among the team members was an essential factor in the winning seasons of both the boys' and girls' teams. Since most of the team members will be returning next year, the cross country skiers look torward to additional winning seasons in the years to come. Multitudes of clothes hang in closets, waiting to be worn, only to be left for another season. Yet many of this year's fads released those unworn garments from their seemingly endless captivity. Both boys and girls dusted off Dad's old sweaters, shirts, and skinny ties and came to school looking like the cover models from GQ and Vogue. The retail industry definitely did not suffer. Guess and Complement jeans made a big hit with the Blake clientele. Students utilized safety pins, making peg legs out of any and every pair of pants. After all, who would want to be seen with pant legs that flare?! Eyewear returned to the ageless horned rims and the classic Vuarnet designs. As for hair, bobs of any length would do, permed or straight. A unisex cut for both genders was long in front and straight and short in back. Hence, Shakespeare's view on fashion can easily be compared to the Blake fashion world. Whatever the current trend may be, Blake students are experimenting with it and molding it to fit their individual personalities. Who knows what it will be next year... The score is evening out; Liz Bokman: 5 games, John: 5 .. . points! 4) Joe McGovern, don't even begin to do it! 5) Socializing; the Seniors favorite past time, next to pizza from Divanni's 6) The girls take a break from the emotional workout of All My Kids to relax 176 Seniors Jill and Jane Senior have just finished another hectic morning at Blake. They search for some relaxation ... an escape from the freshman and the faculty. So, they immediately find their way to the open arms of the Senior Room. Upon entering, the girls witness the raucous battle between the stereo listeners and the soap opera fanatics. As a result of this daily, unresolved conflict, the cassette player and the T.V. are blaring simultaneously. The injected grunts of the frustrated ping-pong and foosball players add to the chorus of confusion. Among all of the mayhem, the girls are still able to find their niche in the Senior Room. It is a tradition to allot seniors a room of their own to escape the sometimes stifling studious atmosphere at Blake. It gives the seniors a feeling of prestige and a sense of privacy. The room reminds them that they are indeed the senior class! The motive behind the room is a symbol of the responsibility that goes hand in hand with being a senior. This year, the seniors wanted to make their room a special place. Motivated by the goals set during Senior Weekend, several dedicated seniors went wild with lavender and blue paint. In addition to the passed along luxuries of a ping-pong and foosball table, the room was endowed with a fabulous stereo system and a tempermental television set. Seniors splashed the walls with posters and slogans of popular colleges and universities. The 1984 seniors took the initiative to turn the Senior Room into a respectable lounge. They established a remarkable foundation from which the class of '85 may build. 6 Seniors 177 178 Yearbook Staff CREW Editor-In-Chief: Amy Myers Assistant Editor: Sarah Bishop Layout Editor: Susie Kaufman Copy Editor: Debbie Thomas Underclassman Editors: Libby Carrier and Laura Gabbert Sports Editor: Mark Lucas Assistant Sports Editor: Kelly Adams Academics Editors: Scott Adams and Ellen Mahoney Senior Section Editors: Heidi Nelson and lulie Stephenson Student Life Editor: Bill Cullen Organizations Editor: Jeremy Birnbaum Art Editors: Kathe Slade and Andrea Wallack Photography Editors: Erik Beal, Paul Hyde and Jay Golden Business Manager: David Mortenson Faculty Adviser: David Breeden With: Brooke Anderson, Liz Bokman, Annie Gabbert, Mike Geffen. Because ne was committed to The B .ike S hotels tradition of academic excellence and because appr t iated the worth of the individual student, the com - ..nits taith in the school was restored. Since his job was administrative in nature, he was not able to get to know all students well; however, he was definitely not aloof. He genuinely enjoyed young people. Mr. Hersey officially left the Blake community in December of 1983 to become the Executive Director of The Courage Center in Golden Valley. When he was asked what he would miss most about Blake, he replied, the commencements.” As he has also celebrated a commencement and a new beginning, we would like to thank him for his devoted service and gentle personality. He will be sincerely missed by The Blake Schools community. The deadlines are complete, the year is finished. (Thankfully, it's not the other way around!) Dedication often goes unrecognized. Therefore, I would like to sincerely thank all of those individuals who worked on Reflections '84. Countless hours of creative energy and patience have been put into these pages. A special thanks goes to Sarah Bishop, my Assistant Editor... for Federal Express runs, delicious munchy supplies and unfailing moral support! Mr. Breeden also deserves an extra pat on the back. Room 213 was my second home throughout the yearbook season(s). Mr. Breeden, I thank you for your hilarious enthusiasm ... let's do it! ... keep work, work, working! ... O.K., Amy, one more hour, but then that's it! Sir, your level headedness and incredible patience has pulled me through five obnoxious deadlines. I consider it an honor to have been the Editor of this year's edition of Reflections. It has given me the satisfaction of giving a significant something back to the school that has given me so much. Indeed, it has been a great responsibility! At the same time, I believe all of the hours of frustration and work have certainly paid off. I believe Reflections '84 has fully captured the high spirit, the special events and the unforgettable memories of the Blake school year. If I may. I'd like to make another dedication. Here's to the special, ambitious, captivating class of 1984. Best wishes for success in the future. And to all, May all your days be circus days ... Amy Myers Editor 184 Closing
