SENIOR CLASS HISTORY Through the years Blackwell High School has been the, spawning grounds for hundreds upon hundreds of young American citizens. As each new year comes and goes, it becomes necessary for another class to cast off its robe of security in the form of sturdy brick walls and deliberate classrooms, and unveil itself to the ever-chal- lenging world. It is in this position that we, the Class of '56, now find ourselves. As we graduate, we become a part of a giant wheel which is constantly turn- ing. This endlessly rotating wheel is known as THE WHEEL OF PROGRESS. By now we fully realize that the education which we have obtain- ed is altogether necessary to the further advance- ment and betterment of our daily living. ln other words, education is the keynote to progress, and progress is the keynote to successful living. With this thought in mind we can look back with pride on our high school years and see how we were molded and formed in preparation for meeting the uncertainties of the future. It was here that the polish and finishing touches were added to the educational foundation which was laid in our early life. ln our initial year we stood untried, unproven, and completely disorganized. At first, the smooth precision with which everything was done had a tendency to frighten us, but through patient guid- ance from our class sponsors, who were Miss Esther Hohmann, Mrs. Betty Harder, and Mr. Jerry Anderson, we gradually came to feel at, home. Our first assignment was to elect class officers, which we did with very encouraging results. La- Donna Fulton was named president, Mona Mc- Kaig, vice president, Juanita Magers, secretary, Deanna Welch, treasurer, and Sharlene Smith and Joyce Curfman were elected to the assembly committee. Our largest undertaking of the year came in the form of the sophomore assembly. To the sur- prise of the upperclassmen we blossomed forth with a magnificent array of talent, and our Gay- Nineties' theme was praised by everyone. Next we were represented exceedingly well by the sophomore girls as they served the annual Junior-Senior Banquet. Shortly following came our class picnic, which was the closing event of the year. From the outset of our iunior year it was ap- parent that we would now assume many respon- sibilities. We soon proved that no task was too great or too small. Again we deemed it necessary to elect competent class officers. They were: Jon Willis, president, Jim Cooper, vice president, Juanita Magers, secretary, Patricia Bradley, trea- surer, and Nancy Griffith and Sharlene Smith, assembly committee. Miss Jean Booth and Mr. Charles Johnson replaced Mrs. Harder and Mr. Anderson as class sponsors. ' , Then came the Junior PIay,' TI Love Lucy', a smash comedy that captivated every audience. Soon after, it again came our turn to present our CIGSS assembl , and again we came through in grand style. 'lyhe old 'Showboatn only made a forty minute stop, but every minute was loaded with entertainment. Just as we were engaged in admiring the shin- ing beauty of our new class rings, we found that the time had arrived to begin preparations for the Junior-Senior Banquet and Prom. The class work- ed many long and tedious hours in getting ready for the forthcoming event. When the long-antici- pated evening finally arrived, it proved to have been well worth waiting for. Juniors and seniors alike spent a very lovely and enchanting 'Even- ing in Paris'. Although the weather was bad, we still tre- mendously enioyed our class picnic in the cafe- teria, and thus came to a close our momentous year as iuniors. At last the time had arrived for us to assume the leading role as seniors. By now our approach- ing goal was very nearly in sight. For our final year we chose a splendid group of officers. Steve LeValley was elected president, Dennis Dunkin, vice president, Harriett Washburn, secretary, Bert Bailey, treasurer, and Barbara Welsh and Nancy Smyth were chosen to serve on the assem- bly committee. The first task for the new cabinet was to pro- mote our annual senior assembly, which was done very well in the form of South Pacific.' Then with the passing of the senior play, My Sister Eileen,' the Junior-Senior Banquet and Prom, and our last class picnic, we discovered ourselves standing at last on the platform of graduation. We could proudly recall the enormous strides we had made since our first year. Time and progress had gradually transformed us into sound thinking individuals. We stood with combined feelings of pride and sadness, as we sang together for the last time whose forever faithful lines of our song, Victory . lt was in this manner that the binding strings, which had held our class together for so many years were severed, never to be completely tied again. Thus, another group of the finest young people in America was released to cope with the per- plexing problems of the future. May God bless and eternally watch over - THAT GREAT GANG OF '56. - Jon Willis
