nun . , fi Ti-IE MARODN SPIRIT THE MAROON SPIRIT is the Past, the Present, and the Future of Blackwell High School. lt is the years and years of traditions piled up by thousands upon thousands of strong, eager, intelligent, as- spiring youths. lt is the efforts, the struggles to get there, the rebuffs, the heartaches, the injuries, the disappointments-and the successes. lt is every game learned, and won or lost. lt is studied lessons and their applications. It is high moral standards, honor, fair play, respect for the rights of others. It is accomplishment in academic, physical and practical. It is leadership - and intelligent followers. It is the pride and the joy in the Worthy. lt is the spirit of Democracy and the challenge of duties understood and accepted. lt is all the little kindnesses and courtesies, and both the little and overwhelming loyalties. It is more than these. It is a ioyous living Presence symbolized in conduct, in colors, in movement, and in properties. As you notice, the artist, Victor Nicholson, made the Maroon Spirit, Himself, pure gold, the bronze of rugged health. His physical makeup suggests percision and fineness of motion, speed, strength, and endurance. ln his right hand he carries high a pure white light, the torch, the lamp of knowledge and civilization. The wings on his helmet suggest what his mind attains, it goes far-but always upward. ln his left hand, but inconspicuously, he carries the laurel wreath of victory. The Maroon Spirit sails on the pure white clouds, his aspirations are high. The golden rays of the Maroon sun shine down upon him-an in- spiration from above-from God! Each hour, each day, each year-many Black- well High School youths emblazon the Maroon Spirit with finer, deeper, and greater essentials of greatness. Each year the colors of the Maroon Spirit are brighter and brighter. Today we have a glowing Spirit to make more brilliant with deeds and aspirations. Today the whole world calls for the Maroon Spirit to strengthen Democracy and to promulgate the doctrine of Christianity.
