It is high moral standards, honor, fair play, respect for the rights of others. It is accomplishment in academic, physical and practical. It is leadership - and intelligent followers. It is the pride and the joy in the Worthy. lt is the spirit of Democracy and the challenge of duties understood and accepted. lt is all the little kindnesses and courtesies, and both the little and overwhelming loyalties. It is more than these. It is a ioyous living Presence symbolized in conduct, in colors, in movement, and in properties. As you notice, the artist, Victor Nicholson, made the Maroon Spirit, Himself, pure gold, the bronze of rugged health. His physical makeup suggests percision and fineness of motion, speed, strength, and endurance. ln his right hand he carries high a pure white light, the torch, the lamp of knowledge and civilization. The wings on his helmet suggest what his mind attains, it goes far-but always upward. ln his left hand, but inconspicuously, he carries the laurel wreath of victory. The Maroon Spirit sails on the pure white clouds, his aspirations are high. The golden rays of the Maroon sun shine down upon him-an in- spiration from above-from God! Each hour, each day, each year-many Black- well High School youths emblazon the Maroon Spirit with finer, deeper, and greater essentials of greatness. Each year the colors of the Maroon Spirit are brighter and brighter. Today we have a glowing Spirit to make more brilliant with deeds and aspirations. Today the whole world calls for the Maroon Spirit to strengthen Democracy and to promulgate the doctrine of Christianity. I 1? '7 5 FACULTY 8IHlaJn MRS. H. L. FRONT, left to right P 1 1 Joan Meade, secretary, and Barbara Muret, treasurer. When thefifty-fivers leave the hallowed halls of B.H.S., one of the most vivid recollections they will carry with them will be of the mountains of books which have played such a big part in their academic life. If they had taken every subiect available in their three years of high school, the collection of texts would resemble the stack above. A sizable memory but one that will be remembered with mixed emotions, no doubt. SENIORS SENIOR CLASS HISTORY Before I tell what I know about the Class of '55, I would like to introduce myself. I am the clock in the main hall of B.H.S. directly over the trophy case. Although I have never before had a chance to speak, I have been very proud iust watching the many classes come and go, and feeling that in my humble way I have Conf,-ibufed my part to their education. The Class of '55, like the many other classes I have seen enter B.H.S., was green and un- steady, hoping for the best, expecting the worst, buf always eager to do its part, hoping someday to be accepted as a part of this great school. To lead them through this trying year the class elected Carol Chrisenberry, president, Eugene Plummer, vice-president, Carolyn Smith, secre- tary, .lim Butcher, treasurer, Barbara Muret, Glenda Richardson, assembly committee, Carole Hoover, Joan Meade, Kathryn Allbaugh, Phyllis Tackett, Bill Rodgers, home room representa- tives, and was guided by the faithful hand of its sponsors, Mrs. Frank Magers, Miss Hattie Wilson, and Mr. W. O. Cook. Although their main iob was becoming known that first year, they iust didn't sit around. No sirl They put on one of the best assembly pro- grams ever to hit that auditorium, and had a whiz-bang of a class picnic to celebrate their successful year, '52-'53. They found their Junior year even harder to break into, but with more responsibility, much of which rested on the shoulders of Pat Dole, president, Eugene Plummer, vice-president, Barbara Muret, secretary, Jim Butcher, treasurer, Renan Lambring, reporter, Skippy McClafIin, Tonya Naylor, assembly committee, Doris Gardner, Polly Sole, Carol Robinson, and Glorene Carriger, home room representatives. One of the Juniors' first tasks was their assembly, which naturally was a huge success. B.H.S. then called on the class acting ability, which they gave wholeheartedly. The result was the Junior play, The Monkey's Uncle. The cur- tain went up three times, and three times played to packed houses. The biggest test of the year was the prom, which they handled beautifully. It was held in the new cafeteria. The theme was 'Moon Medley.'f The cafeteria was also the place of the class picnic, which had to be held inside because of bad weather, but was enioyed by all, At last, experienced and capable, the Class of '55 was organized and on them rested the res- ponsibility of leading the school. With their capable officers, J.R. Rader, president, Eugene Plummer, vice president, Joan Meade, secretary, Barbara Muret, treasurer, Stella Jackson, repor- ter, Dora Pemberton and Skippy McCIafIin, assembly committee, Gary Boyer, Carol Martin- dale, Nancy Kotchavar, and Nancy Yoder, home room representatives, they began on their last round. They put on two assemblies and the Senior Play, a smash comedy, with expert suc- cess. Realizing that with the prom and annual class picnic, they would be bowing out of B.H.S., the class of '55 felt more than a little bit sad about leaving although not one of them would admit it. What seems to be the most outstanding trait of the class is that they know this is not the end, but only the beginning in this experience called life. I know they will meet it with eagerness and will be successful. Knowing that their contribution to B.I'l-S. will never be forgotten, I shall go back to ticking in- stead of talking, and close my account of the Class of '55. -- - RODNEY CAMPBELL 1 .gy , 4. The loyalty of her devotion to her God, her country, her school, and her fellowman, is equalled only by her own personal integrity of character. The honesty and sincerity for which she stands are representative of the principles of all Blackwell High School students of past, present, and future. Miss BHS is not a mythical figment of an ideal- istic imagination but a living, breathing symbol of the highest standard to which every American girl strives. Her life is not one devoted to self- advancement, rather she lives for the service she can render to others. She begins now to prepare herself for a life ofuseful accomplishment through conscientious application to each opportunity for spiritual and mental growth that presents itself. She is secure in the knowledge that when tomor- row comes, she -will be prepared. Her face is alight with the inward glory that comes from her deep love of humanity, a love that transposes her into a living beauty-beauty of mind, of body, and of soul. The red roses she holds in her arms are sym- bolic of the victory of mind and spirit that will ever be her goal-victory tempered with humility and the realization of the responsibilities that accompany triumph. Yet even as she nears the completion of the task, Miss BHS is always look- ing upward, ever sighting new ends for which she will strive. Miss BHS is everything that comprises an All- American girl. First and foremost she is the democratic choice of her class mates and teachers. They honor and respect her, approve of her con- duct, and enioy her companionship. She is the embodiment of all the qualifies that typify all of them. Citizens of Blackwell High School, Miss BHS is your true representative, for even as the Ma- roon Spirit is Blackwell High School, Miss BHS is YOU. ----Carol J. Robinson 1 SPURTS 2130 pm Q JXX1 Q!
