Come Wzth Me Down Memory Lane 1916 1989 Three score and 13 years ago bundles of Joy wrapped in pink or blue blankets became a part of families that were scattered near and far Many different circumstances brought these First Graders to Blackwell Oklahoma school system These students attended various elementary schools Upon becoming 6th graders everything changed and brought about an exciting event All 6th graders became students of South A School This school consisted of a series of classrooms located on the East area of the High School grounds The students stayed in their homerooms and the teachers came to the rooms Each teacher taught a different subject Nell Mann was the school Principal Other teachers were Jean Bontz Jack Braden Catherine Carter Grace Combest Meryl Neal Frances Nelson Verna Parcher and Earlene Shepherd South A School was a great equalizer There were no younger students to try to lmpress and no older students to guide us We had a fantastic group of teachers who taught pulled tugged pushed and finally managed to get us ready for a very scary change ln our lives Junior High School' Was Junior High ready for us but more importantly were we ready for the change? Everything was so different It was a three level building and three dlfferent grades The teachers remained in their classrooms and the students changed classes Glen Hamilton was the Principal and he had a large staff of eager to teach well qualified teachers which included Helen Ambrose Jack Braden Lula Claybaker Grace Combest Harold Cotton Alice Crow Florence Fadler George Huckaby Hazel LeForce Nell Mann Merle Neal Ethel Orvis Myra Robertson Opal Schweisburger Vivian Sharp and Alpha Skirving At Junior High our growth both physical and mental was erratic Some grew faster than others in Most of the students lived one or more miles from the school building Where oh where were the yellow school busses and the convenient cafeter1as We walked to and from school four times a day Very few families had one car per family We got our exercise that way Girls remember the silk hose and high heel shoes we wore? The silk hose managed to get runners and had to be sewed up No self respectmg girl wore hose with runners showing We only discarded them when the hose became so small due to the sewed up places that we could no longer get the hose over our feet Forget the school busses forget the cafeterlas where were the runproof nylons when we needed them so desperately? Remember Mrs OTVIS our Study Hall Teacher? That remarkable lady could dlrect us toward the correct answer to any questlon in any subject And her ability to detect chewing gum' Early S1gI'lS of radar before we knew the meanlng of the word Ah High School We had at last arrived The experiences of Science departments Home Ec Band Chorus and the wonderful Chapel programs were most excltlng And for those sports mlnded fellows football basketball wrestling and tennis were waiting for them to prove their abilities For the glrls gymnasium awalted us The exciting games of basketball with the court divided into three sections for us dehcate females The dances and movements that Miss Wheeler put us through were sheer joy for some and a nightmare for others Shower time was a horrible time for all of us the first few weeks For some speed became a necessity to avoid the frowned upon late arrival to the next class And there were no blowers to dry the halr Maypole wrapping tlme was quite an event' To be escorted by those older young men created a lot of anticipation That was the tlme to display our long crepe paper dresses as well as our other dance costumes One year wasn t enough for some and an endless agony for others 7 . 7 . l 7 , . 7 7 ' .
