The rigin 0 BLACK RIVER gi X 'ilu When the Sullivan, Spencer, Albion, Homerville, and Huntington schools consolidat- ed in 1959, there was a need for a name. The Board of Education suggested that a contest be held by the whole student body to decide on a name for the new school. The names were submitted to the Board and after the members pondered over these names, one name was chosen as the best. Which, of course, is Black River. This name was submitted by Emma Messmore and Seth Zimmerman, Black River was chosen because oi' the Black River which flows through all the town- ships in the school district except for Jackson. This geographical landmark represents the unity that exists in our school.
