Since Black River High School was opened in 1961, the number of books in the library have been increased from about 600 to 5,575. One can go through the stacks and find books about almost anything, like adventures, biographies, costumes, drama, English, fiction, geography, history, Iceland, Jef- ferson, the Klondike, law, money, nature, the ocean, police, queens, rituals, science, teenagers, the United States, volcanoes, women, Xerxes, Yellowstone, and zoology. Because of all the books now in the library the shelf space has been filled and new stacks have been ordered. It is hoped that the new shelves will be in use by the end of this school year. With a circulation of approximately forty books a day, the student librarians are kept busy signing books in and out and putting the returned books back on the shelves. Latin Club ROW ONE: V. The Superior rating was accomplished by the combined efforts of the band students and Mr. Charles R. Hass, their director. This year the band is under the direction of Mr. Homer G. Bowers. Mr. Bowers graduated from Ashland College with a Bachelor of Music degree with a major in Music Education. He has brought much spirit and further knowledge to the band. The class consisted of twelve girls and seven boys. They were: Carol Adamson, Mary Cole, Linda Drury, Peggy Eichel, Carol Hachtel, Marge Herrmann, Cheri LaMar, Priscilla Owen, Beverly Phillips, Mary Ann Reibe, Pam Simcox, Donna Howard, Dallen Botdorf, George Fleming, David Gruver, Marian Halliwell, Cloyd Rogers, David Ross, Ron Williams, and Gary Clevidence. Mrs. Weiler was our teacher for that year. The second grade brought only two additions to our number, Laura Comptson, and John Pay. We lost Mary Cole and Mary Ann Reibe. Our teacher for that year was Miss Middour. She taught us many new and different things such as dancing. In our third year of school we had Mrs, Soka for our teacher, We took a train trip to Mansfield and visited the fire and police departments. Linda Dexter, Fred Grant, Julia Goon, Bil l Gump, and Lonnie Ramsier became new members of our class, while Laura Comptson, Julia Goon, Cheri LaMar, John Pay, Cloyd Rogers, and David Rass left us. For the fourth grade we were transferred from Albion to the Homerville building. Our teacher was Mrs. Campbell. Students joining us that year were: Richard Foster, Charyl Spangenburg, Bonnie Barr, John Carey, Beverly Bieghly, Sarah Senz, and Janice Clark. Students leaving us included Beverly Bieghly and Charyl Spangenburg, The fifth grade was a delightful year for all of us. Mrs. Lowe, our teacher, took us on a field trip to the Aquarium and to Thompson's Products in Cleveland. During the year Dick Haynes and Annabelle Radley joined us while Richard Foster, Bonnie Barr, Sarah Senz, and Janice Clark, left us. Dick Haynes, Annabelle Radley, and Donna Howard left after the completion of the year. Sixth grade came and soon we would beat the end of our elementary years. The new students who came that year were: Harold Dean, Sharon Bowser, and Sheryl Anderson. The students who left after sixth grade were: Sheryl Anderson, George Fleming, Marian Halliwell, and Fred Grant. Many festivities brightened our year. During the winter of that year we had a skating party at Pam Simcox's lake. Also, in the spring the girls gave two plays that w e had written ourselves, and on the last day of school we had a picnic and party at the home of Dallen Botdorf. We had hot dogs and all the trimmings. Some of us decided to go wading in the creek behind the house. It ended up in a free for all and we all got soaking wet. All in all, we had fun those last days of our elementary years in the sixth grade. In Huntington, under the direction of Mrs. Gertrude Smith and Mrs. JoAnn Keep, we began the first grade with the following classmates: Patty Kaiser, Karen Larsen, Mary Baker, Christina Krueck, Glenna Weber, Sherry Hayes, Alice Twining, Donna Sprinkle, Ralph Peters, John Wilhelm, Charles Twining, Billy Watson, Lee Wilison, George Keep, Kim Myers, Mike Bakos, Richard Ely, Larry Weitzel, Dennis Rosecrans, Jane Huggins, and Ernest (Traverse) Sanders, In the second grade our teacher was Mrs. Gertrude Smith. Those who joined us were: Jenny Welch, Roger Draper, and Jenifer Blanton, and we lost Glenna Weber, Richard Ely, Emest (Traverse) Sanders, and Patty Kaiser. Mrs. Smith and Mrs. Koons were our third grade teachers, Four students came into the class. They were: Larry Garra, Connie Reilly, Ernest Traverse, Bob Traverse. We lost only one classmate; Billy Watson, In the fourth grade, Mary Koons was our teacher and we gained two new classmates: Margie Ward and Bar- bara Honeberger. In the fifth grade, our teacher was Mrs, Helen Wiggs, and we gained one student, Calvin Dick. We went to Sullivan for the sixth grade. In September 1955, twenty-three eager students entered the first grade at Spencer School. They were: Re- becca Dobson, Larry Johnson, Janis Billman, Larry Riffle, Mickey Baker, Elmo Hord, Bette Linden, Nelson Strait, Russell Hendricks, Melvin Reisinger, Carol Wolf, Sandy Blatter, Irene Pomeroy, Debbie Rook, Laurie Stuart, Gary Emerson, Tom Clifford, Cheryl Rowley, Eddie Braddock, Karen Norris, Linda Shearer, Douglas Moore, Rosalie 49 Ingraham. Elaine Bidinger joined us and Mrs, Wreatha Dickason was our teacher. Our second grade teacher was Mrs, Edna Culler. Debbie Rook left us. Mrs. Spechalske, our third grade teacher, welcomed Allen Payne, David Puie, Clayton Brinker, Scherry Mc- Graw, Dick Haynes, and George Swartzfager into the class. We lost Douglas Moore, Mrs. Bertha Rowe was our fourth grade teacher. Linda Baker, Kathleen Kusmik, Doug Dobson, Gary Rice, Jim Braddock, and Delores Long joined our class; while Dick Haynes, Allen Payne, and Clayton Brinker left us. Our fifth grade teacher was Mrs, Doris Kime, but due to Mrs. Kime's illness, Mrs. Strong took her place. Joining us were Karen McCourt, Emma Vaughn, Mary Rice, Martha Breyley, Dreama Emerson, Ruthann Williams, Wayne Varney, Jerry Shellhorn, and Walter Boreman, Deloris Long left us. In the sixth grade, Rev, Jack Mellick was our teacher. We welcomed Peggy Ody, Laurel Scheck, Marjorie Latham, Fred Schaub, and Leroy Yolk to our class. Melvin Reisinger, Elmo Hord, Nelson Strait, Sandy Blatter, Gary and Dreama Emerson, Eddie and Jim Braddock, and Linda Shearer left us. A big day in our lives was the step to Junior High School where we met our classmates from Huntington, Sullivan, and Homerville. On an early September morning, seventeen partly eager, partly reluctant children entered a school for the first time. Even though we had long been looking forward to this event, we really didn't know what to think of the huge brick building called Sullivan School with long halls and more doors than we had ever seen in one building before. After all of us had found our way to the first grade classroom, the students present were: Sam (more often called Tinker) Raider, Eddie Honeycut, Doug Knapp (rather short), David Eby, Ernie Sanders (best friend to Jim Skeeles), Larry Farnsworth, Donnie Gregg, Natalie Vance, Kathy Cole, Linda Graham (called Giggle Box''), Janice Kirkpatrick (tallest of the girls), Mary Joque, Crystal Elliott (a real brain ), Jerry Pay (well built even then), Jim Skeeles (tall and slim, naturally), Patty Hall (who always wore baby shoes), and Rodney Mays (one of the bigger boys in the class). Then, Mrs, Painter initiated us into Sullivan School. On the whole, the first year was a very happy one for us. We were, however, saddened by the death of Kathy Cole. When we had progressed to the second grade, we were much more sure of ourselves, Four people joined our class. They were: Phil Dawson, Roger Langford, Nancy Swope, and Linda Wooten. Two pupils left our class. They were: Ernie Sanders and Patty Hall. Our teacher, Mrs. Kemp made us behave and made us learn. Learn we did, because before we knew it, we had progressed to the third grade. When we passed into the third grade, three students moved away. They were: Donnie Gregg, Nancy Swope, and Natalie Vance. However, Ernie Sanders returned to our class and June Tedrow also joined our class. Mrs. Livingston, advanced our minds to the fourth grade level. Our fourth grade class was considerably smaller than the last year's class. Phil Dawson, David Eby, Eddie Honeycutt, Roger Langford, and Ernie Sanders moved away. Mrs. Clouser was our teacher, that we all liked very much. When our class passed into the fifth grade, we lost two students and gained two. June Tedrow and Mary Joque left us while Margie Blankenship and Cheri LaMar joined us. Mrs. Welch taught our class in the same room and at the same time as the sixth grade class, Needless to say, the two different classes kept her very busy. As we came to school to start our sixth grade year, we went into the same room, had the same teacher, but our class was over two times as large as our fifth grade class. This year the Huntington sixth grade came to Sullivan. Besides the Huntington students Dwain Parks, David Bodnar, Bob Shepard, and Larry Gum also joined our class. We got along very well, we were one big happy sixth grade class. The seventh grade came with a different school and a different way of learning. For our seventh grade year we attended Black River Junior High School at Spencer. Here we were introduced for the first time to the con- 50 fusing practice of class changing. As we entered the halls of the Black River Junior High for the first time we were all very frightened and a little shy of each other. Our shyness subsided and we all became friends, We, the class of 1967 were the first graduating class to start together in the seventh grade, The students who started together in the seventh grade were: John Wilhelm, Ron Williams, Harold Dean, Bob Klipstein, Tom Clifford, Laurel Scheck, Larry Riffle, David Gruver, Marge Herrmann, Carol Hachtel, Linda Dexter, Dwain Parks, Linda Baker, Peg Eichel, Carol Adamson, Scherry McGraw, Douglas Knapp, Dennis Rosecrans, Bette Linden, Cheryl Rowley, Priscilla Owen, Beverly Phillips, Karen Norris, Linda Drury, Wayne Varney, Dick Haynes, Jerry Pay, Kim Myers, Emma Vaughn, Barbara Honeberger, Dave Bodnar, Blaine Bidinger, Mary Rice, Martha Breyley, Erma Shellhorn, Linda Wooten, Sharon Bowser, John Carey, LeRoy Yoak, Bob Shephard, Dallen Botdorf, Cheri LaMar, George Swartzfager, Re- becca Dobson, Crystal Elliott, Janis Billman, Alice Twining, Larry Johnson, Irene Pomeroy, Rodney Mayes, Jim Skeeles, Carol Wolfe, Karen Larsen, Janice Kirkpatrick, Linda Graham, Donna Sprinkle, Charles Eberling, Schery] Hayes, Marge Ward, Chris Krueck, Pam Simcox, Kathy Kusmik, Jane Huggins, Laura Stuart, and George Keep. As we entered the eighth grade, we gained a few more students: Larry Gum, Richard Hotchkiss, Lydia Payne, Linda Austin, and Diana Fasnacht, but we lost four of our newly made friends: Linda Baker, Laurel Scheck, Sharon Bowser, and Harold Dean. These were the years we learned of class meetings and changing classes. After eighth grade we enter high school and were low on the totem pole again until our much dreamed of senior year, High School! We had finally made it, As in the previous years, our lockers and their combinations gave many of us problems, but with the aid of our gallant upperclassmen we overcame the crisis. Each day held a new and adventurous peril. Our biggest event of that year was our freshman dance which was a big success. In that year Beverly Phillips, Carol Wolfe, Lydia Payne, and George Swartzfager left us. Our frightened group was joined by Juanita Wagner and Sharon Farnsworth. Our sophomore year was highlighted by various money making projects, We were the first class to make the coat check at the basketball games a success. That year we sold fruitcakes; but this didn't turn into much of a success. We were joined by Faye Bragg, Dan Monroe, and Betty Yergin. Kenneth Landis and Sharon Farnsworth left us, we were saddened by their deaths. Our Junior year started and we seemed to have more ahead of us then the previous years. All were excited by their shiny new class rings we had received the latter part of the year. Our first big project was the summer magazine sal es. We began the choosing and working on our play, Pillow Talk . The hard work was richly re- warded by its great success. Our next big project was the Prom. All worked hard to bring our theme, Winds of Tahiti into reality. The big night arrived and the gymnasium truly revealed our task to be a beautiful success. This year we welcomed Phyllis Pruitt, Mike Todd, Jim Klipstein to our class and Marjorie Ward left us. At last, we were Seniors, the big day had finally arrived! All the long awaited privileges of being Seniors were now ours. We looked forward to the day off for collecting the annual advertisements, The most exciting event of our senior year was the preparation for the annual. Many worked hard to help complete it in time for graduation. We also sponsored the annual Sweetheart's Dance and took over the refreshment stand at football games. Towards the end of the year we all were engrossed in our plans for graduation and for some of us higher levels of learning after graduation, Finally we are about to journey into the world on our separate roads of life, Many thanks to our parents and teachers for trying to prepare us for this important move. We only hope that we can live up to the standards they have set for us. Karen Motes and Steven Kabbage joined during our senior year, Ernest Sanders left us. lle fe i ete oa y é | t DAIRY JUDGING TEAM GENERAL LIVESTOCK QUEEN Marsha Carlson ey i LAND JUDGING TEAM Beta Club ROW ONE: W. This is your life, Black River Pirates. The Good Days ... and the bad. The sweat and the tears and the color, and music and marching. ... REMEMBER 1958? That’s when it all started. September 8, 1958, when Black River High School was born of- ficially. The adults from Spencer, Sullivan, Homerville and Hunt- ington were still grumbling about Varsity consolidation, and yearning for the ‘“‘good old days.”’ Not reali- zing the “good old days’ had gone forever. You kids had a better idea. “Let’s make 1958 a memorable year, first of all on the football field.”’” That’ll pull those four communities together, and give them a common pride. And it worked. Coach Larry Marker, whose heart was in basketball, took over the foot- in high gear. Four straight wins. TOTAL | SCORE: River 150, Foes, 28. No | other team ever started like that. The high-water mark was reached in that fourth outing, River flooding over Milan, 62- 8, although Marker cleared his bench. Everybody but the Ma- jorettes got into the game. SPECHALSKE THE VILLAIN The bubble burst the next week, and it’s been all up hill ever since. Ben Spechalske en- gineered the beginning of the toboggan slide. The genial big man from Lo- di forgot to be genial on that beautiful October day. He led his “Terrible Tigers’ to a 26- 16 win over River, ending the four-game streak and inflicting the No. 1 football loss on the Rivermen. Marker’s Men were not inef- fectual that day; the Pirates had 361 net yards, but it wasn’t enough. Tigers Bob Packard, Tom Heffelfinger, Jerry Under- wood, Jim Nicholas and Bob Packard slammed the door on the River crew when it counted, and Bruce Pope ran wild — an it was all over. RON AND PAT TAKE OVER Marker went back to his first love, basketball, the following year, and Ron Mack moved in. to the pilot house, aided by the irrespressible Irishman from Sandusky, Pat (‘‘We’re hurtin”) Gallagher. The first was a heart-breaker, a 6-0 loss to revenge-minded La Grange. Then John Racketa’s LeR oy Red Raiders put on their ‘Side Saddle-T”’ show on the road, and the Pirates walked the plank, 16-0, a 75-yard draw play by speedy Mike Ferrell clinching the verdict for the Racketa crew. Close decisions to Plymouth and Western Reserve were marked in the loss column, he fore Milan absorbed a 28-0 whip. ping from the Mack-men. Three TD passes from Nagy-to-Waltz made it seem like early 1958 a gain. This But not for long. Jim Allen, Jim Nicholas and Bob Packard were harder to get along with, and Lodi racked up a 22-6 win. Then Dick Brockett’s Seville gang tode away with an 18-0 de- cision. mainly on interceptions by Dick Armstrong, and dashes by Oberli, Chidsey and Hewit. A 14-14 tie with Berlin Heights provided a little (not much) con- solation, and the season ended on a 1-6-1 note. Remember? A NEW HELMSMAN Jack Purtell, another basket- ball phenom, gave it a try in 1960, but the former Ashland College star couldn’t guide the River craft into a victory port. The mark was a sad 0-7-1, the deadlock being a 12-12 battle with Milan. The year 1961 was better. There was a win, and it was to be the last in the past six years. Purtell’s crew bowed to Avon, 20-6, in the 1961 debut in the In- land Conference, and then he came real close to an upset a- gainst rugged Buckeye. Jim Thomas, now co-captain at Vanderbilt, tallied twice in the 12-6 win, one a pass from Boyd McCourt, and that was just enough for John Murphy’s ta- lented Bucks. Dick VanMeter notched 65 and 40-yard TD dashes against Mi- lan in the third fray, but Mi- lan’s Redskins had come alive, and it was a wrong-way 32-22 final. THIS WAS THE GAME The fourth game, on Sept. 29, 1961 was the one we always re- Good Years and the Lean fer back to — it was the last win (until this Friday, we hope). The long losing streak, 14- games, came to an end as the Pirates sprinted out to an 18-0 half-time lead at Plymouth. VanMeter tallied twice, one of the six-pointers being a per- fect pitch from Jack Grissinger, Homer’s top pitcher on the dia- mond as well. Don Channel add- ed a TD and all Plymouth’s Big Red could muster was eight points, the final reading 18-8. That was it. The big one. The last one. Color it red. HORNETS IN A THRILLER Of course, the thrills don’t end there. Only the playing of the victory march. Take that next game. The very next one after the win ov- er Plymouth. A 30-30 tie with Highland. A real barn-burner. -To show you how crazy that one was, the final gun went off during an argument in the mid- dle of the field. The sch 0 01 of- ficials had joined the coaches at midfield, so the time let the clock run, and the game ended with school officials on the Riv- er 40. Unbelievable, but true! Ken Schiele had three touch- downs and 225 yards for the Hor- nets, and Jack Grissinger com- pleted 14 of 27 for the Pirates. Cloverleaf was next, which was too bad. Harold VanMeter scored twice, but George Popo- vic and Bill Heffelfinger went over the goal twice for the Colts, who won, 50-20. Brunswick couldn’t be stopp- ed either, a 52-12 margin be- ing notched in that one by Don Shackleton’s band of Blue Dev- ils. A 6-6 tie with Western Re- serve made it a 1-6-2 season. DRY SPELL SET IN Purtell couldn’t get the Pirat- es in the win column in 1962, a © 50-0 demolishing by Buckeye climaxing the season. Pat Gal- lagher was handed the squad in a last-minute switch in 1963, the news remaining the same, 8-0. for the season. Pat put in the ‘Prevent De- fense’’ in 1964, the strategy de- vised to hold a lead. It wasn’t needed; the Pirates never led. They did stave off defeat in the tussle at Mapleton on Octo- ber 17, the game ending in a 6-6 standoff. Young Dan Jordan gave it the old college try last year, the 1965 result sheet reading the same dismal 0-8. Dan was in some tight ones: 12-6 at Milan, 18-12 with Maple- ton, and 15-8 at Western Reserve but the end result was tears in the cheerleading tent. WE’LL CRY TOMORROW Mt. Union’s Ron Weaver was next on the scaffold, and 1966 is shaping up like a half dozen which have gone before. Berlin Heights, with an 18-0 de- cision over the Weavers, was held in check for the most part, but the Tigers slipped away of- ten enough for the win. So it’s 0-7 going into Friday’s tussle with Hillsdale. What with Homecoming and all that mor- al support that’s building up a- round the area, the Pirates seem destined to pull an upset here. We're risking a kopeck or two that it will happen. If it doesn’t we'll cry tomorrow. ee BLACK RIVER ALL-TIME FOOTBALL RECORDS YEAR WON LOST TIE PTS.
