hat the Future Offers Anita Battle, 1978, Telecommunications Tom Ross, 1957, Criminal Law On February 7, 1989, Bishop O'Dowd held Career Dayg an event which occurs every other year. Career Day gives students the opportunity to hear and speak to people who are in careers that they find interesting. The speakers consisted of people from the community and O'Dowd alumni. lt was an important day for alumni because it gave them the opportunity to share what they have learned and to see what O'Dowd is like today. One such speaker, Don Henry, Class of 1959, came all the way from Atlanta, Georgia to speak about being an airline pilot. It is this type of commitment that makes Career Day a success. The day was cosponsored by the Counseling Department and the Development Office. Teresa Acebo and Fr. Colelli selected and scheduled speakers, while Fran Warmerdam and Fr. Ranalletti organized the scheduling of students. The day was divided into three sessions, each an hour long and students were given the opportunity to choose one speakerfcareer topic from each. Among the career topics offered, the most popular were television production, advertising, medicine, criminal law and architecture. Students were impressed with this year's Career Day and felt it was helpful. Junior, John Olson, summed up the day by saying, I was educated and inspired to go on to bigger and better things. College Night is a special event hosted by the Counseling Department where O'Dowd students have the opportunity to meet representatives from colleges around the country. It is a chance for students to talk to these representatives and learn more about the colleges they hope to attend and to discover colleges that were unknown to them. Students learn how to apply and when to apply. Speakers discuss the importance of college and encourage students to begin thinking about college. College Night helps students, as well as parents, become aware of the opportunities that are available to them in the college world. Looking to the Future 28 STUDENT LIFE
