NOLL, D.D. The death of Archbishop Noll on July 31, 1936, brought to a close eighty-one years of service dis¬ tinguished by many accomplishments not often found in the record of one life. Except for his student days, he spent his entire life in the Diocese of Fort Wayne. Born on January 25, 1875, Archbishop Noll was baptized, received his first Holy Communion, was confirmed, ordained a priest, offered his first Mass, was consecrated a bishop, observed the Golden Jubilee of his priesthood and the Silver Jubilee of his episcopacy in the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception of Fort Wayne. After serving as a priest in several parishes in the Diocese, he was appointed pastor of St. Mary ' s Parish in Huntington- It was in that city in 1912 that he founded OUR SUNDAY VISITOR which has be¬ come a weekly visitor in thousands of homes from coast to coast. In 1925 he was consecrated and installed as the fifth Bishop of the Diocese of Fort Wayne. It would be impossible to state here all the achievements of a life so rich, full, and active almost to the end. Mention must be made, however, of his great bene¬ ficence and interest in this high school named in his honor. It was he who purchased the property from the Poor Handmaid Sisters who originally established the school. He liekwise financed a great portion of the cost of the eighteen room addition dedicated in 1947. In every part of the Diocese of Fort Wayne and in many places beyond it, there are evidences of the devoted labor of Archbishop Noll. These will stand for many generations in the history of the Catholic Church in America as enduring monuments to his memory, bearing witness to his claim upon our grateful prayers. As he was completely dedicated to serving his Master and in leading souls to Him, so now may the Great High Priest be generous and merciful to him and grant him eternal rest and peace. 6 On January 2, 1957, Archbishop Amletoj Cicog- mi. Apostolic Delegate to the United States, an¬ nounced that Pope Pius XII had named Bishop Andrew G. Grutka the first Bishop of the new Diocese of Gary. The Diocese is composed of Lake, Porter, LaPorte, and Starke counties, formerly a part of the Diocese of Fort Wayne. Bishop Grutka was consecrated and installed by Archbishop Cicognani as the Ordinary of the Diocese of Gary on February 25, 1957, in the new Cathedral of Holy Angels in Gary. Bishop Grutka was born in 1908 in Joliet, III., the son of immigrant parents from Slovakia. He received his early education in that city and later went to work in the steel mills of Joliet, where he advanced to the position of assistant to the super¬ intendent in the Bessmer department. I was then that he made the decision to study for the priesthood. He entered St. Procopius Seminary, Lisle, III-, and later completed his theological studies at the North American College in Rome. He was Photo by Fabian Bachrach RUTKA, D.D. ordained to the priesthood in Rome on December 5, 1933, by Cardinal Marchetti-Selvaggiana. Returning to the United States, he served as assistant pastor of St. Vincent Church, Elkhart. In 1942 he was appointed pastor of Sacred Heart Church, East Chicago. In 1944 he was named pastor of Holy Trinity Church, Gary, where he was serving when named Bishop. He was named a Domestic Prelate with the title of Right Reverend Monsignor on April 27, 1956. Prior to his consecration, Bishop Grutka was active in civic as well as in Church affairs. He served as president of the Gary Re¬ development Commission, treasurer of the Gary Urban League, was a member of the Gary Com¬ munity Welfare Council, and was associated with the Catholic Trade Unionists. The faculty and students of Bishop Noll High School join all the Catholics of the new Diocese of Gary on congratulating Bishop Grutka on his appoint¬ ment and in pledging to him their obedience, support, and prayers. 7 ST. While in the other classes, each home¬ room elects a complete set of officers, the seniors elect one president for the entire class. Each senior homeroom submits two candidates and the entire senior class chooses the one who will officially represent them. Each indi¬ vidual homeroom elects a vice-president, secre¬ tary, and treasurer. Shawn Doolin was selected by the seniors as their class president. Shawn, one of a fam¬ ily of twelve children, is a member of St. Joseph ' s Parish, Dyer. Choice of him as senior class president is evidence of his pleasing and popular personality and high ideals. While at Noll, Shawn was a representative to Indiana Boys ' State, and was active in ath¬ letics, especially track and baseball, and was a member of the Monogram Club. By attaining that enviable record, Catherine Matthews deserves the honor of the Valedictor¬ ian of the Class of 1957. Cathy is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Millard T. Matthews. She is a member of Holy Angels Cathedral Parish, Gary, and attended that parochial school. At Noll High School Cathy was elected by the Faculty to the National Honor Society in her freshman year and has retained that membership throughout her four years. She also held membership in the Bi-Phy-Chem, an hon¬ orary science club, and participated in both the Noll Science Fair and the Northwestern Regional Science Fair. By popular vote among the students she was elected to the Student Administration and was also active in the Latin Club, Red Cross, and a member of the Marquette Staff. For the immediate future Cathy plans to continue her formal education at Marquette University where she plans to enter the medical field. EDWARD KOCZWARA CLASS SALUTATORIAN By attaining the highest academic record among the boys of the senior class, Edward Koczwara has achieved the distinction of being named the Salutatorian of the Class of 1957. Ed is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Koczwara and a member of St. Stanislaus Parish, East Chicago. Before coming to Noll High School, he attended St. Stanislaus elementary school, from which he graduated with highest honors among his class. At Noll High Ed soon established an outstanding scholastic record. He was elected to the National Honor Society for four years. He was a member of the Bi-Phy- Chem Science Club for two years and participated in the annual Noll Science Fair during his junior and senior years. A well rounded education includes the physical as well as the intellectual. While at Noll, Ed was active in sports and participated in track and cross country. It was in these sports that he won his letter in the Monogram Club. Ed will continue his education in college, but those plans are still somewhat indefinite. 25 Ronald Pyke, Robert Ennis, David Sabo, Richard Grot. In the Indiana Science Talent Search co-sponsored by the General Motors Corporation and the Eli Lilly Company Pyke and Ennis placed as two of the twenty- four winners in the entire State of Indiana. Play up! And play the game! Sir Henry Newbolt COURAGE is synonymous with School Spirit. The COURAGE of the entire student body at Noll High School is staunch and unwavering. It manifests itself in many ways, particularly in the field of Athletics. It is on accompaniment of the loyalty and pride Nollites hold in the achievements of their Warrior athletes. Teachers ond eooches inspire all Noll athletes with the COURAGE to reach their goals. Cheerladers give them an outlet for this some Spirit as they sing and shout for victory. Nowhere is COURAGE more clearly exemplified than on the ploying field. Warrior athletes enjoy competing with other skilled players from the Calumet Area and throughout the Stote of Indiana — not for personal glory, but to bring honor to their Alma Mater. With COURAGE each player assumes the role assigned to him whether it be to star or to help the teom to win. Every good team plays to win, and victory is sweet when it comes. Moral COURAGE, however, is sometimes more important to the character of an othlete than physical prowess. The combination of physical and spiritual strength is unbeatable, and Noll High may well be proud of her othletes and her students for their COURAGE. 75 BOOSTER CLUB The Booster Club represents one of the most enthusiastic phases of the Noll High School Spirit, that of cheering the Warrior teams. The membership in the club is restricted to Seniors, in the hope that their qualities of leadership will enable them to set an example of good sportsmanship and cooperation to the underclassmen. The club ' s activities are: supervision and organization of pep rallies, the cheering block at games, posters for the sectional tourney, selling shakers and megaphones, and sponsoring the annual Homecoming Dance. This year the officers are: Pat Norkus, president; Pat Hoffman, secre¬ tary; Sharon St. Mary, treasurer. Father Casey is the faculty sponsor. Row 1: P. Hojnacki, C. Bonner, M. Hauer, J. Cheering for both football and basketball, they have shown the student body, alumni, friends, and opponents the true meaning of good sportsmanship and school spirit. In victory or defeat, these energetic girls filled the air with the feeling of hope from the first whistle of the game to the last. They were also sponsors of some pre-game pep sessions and post-game dances. Under the sponsorship of Mrs. Humpher, the cheerleaders are chosen, periodically by her and a selected faculty committee. Varsity Cheerleaders are (above) Martyna Ryder, Virginia Krivickas, Janice Vargo, Patti Knittel, Donna Augustine, and Nat¬ alie Burnham. Reserve Cheerleaders are (left) Carol Chovanec, Mary Ellen Shapley, and Nano Cloghessy. 79 _ Freshmen Football Row 1: T. Ryder, R. Hart, T. Bochnowski, W. Hughes, G. Schmelter. Row 2: K. Kowalke, R. Without a doubt, the Warriors played the roughest schedule of any team in the tourney, and were thought by many to have a slim chance to fair at all well in the Sectional. Pat Galvin, the big surprise of the tournament, netted 21 points; Marcinek popped in 20; Adzia hit 19; Norm Fech and Bob White hit 13 and 14 respectively, as Noll dumped the highly favored Senators of East Chicago Washington, 87-79, in the first game. The sharp shooting Warriors set a record high average of .544 in this game. Another record for one tourney game was the combined Warrior-Senator score of 166 points. Hammond Clark became the second Warrior victim in the anti-climatic evening struggle, 69-41. In the next game Noll emerged from a slim 4 point halftime lead to stubborn Hammond Tech 51-36 for their third tourney win. To the victors belong the spoils. The Noll Warriors are pictured immediately after cutting down the nets as they raced to victory in the Sectional Tournament played in the new Washington East Chicago gym. Row 1: Dennis Sroka, Norm Fech, Pat Galvin, Russ Marcinek, Alan Adzia, Eugene Swanson. Row 2: Coach Dermody, Bob White, Bill Vincent, Coach Hudson, Coach HufFine, Tom Yorke, Jerry Walters, Joe Manchak, and Coach Dunleavy. In the final game of the Sectional Tournament with Hammond High, the Noll Warriors found themselves behind, 4-0, at the outset; but they were invincible during the re¬ mainder of the game as they moved ahead on Galvin ' s 3 point play. Every starter enjoyed at least one bucket as Noll charged to a 17-9 first stanza lead. The Warriors just seemed to be getting warmed up as Wildcat partisans looked on in awe, and Noll followers yelled, Pour it on! The Warriors continued to hit at the phenomenal pace of .518 during the remainder of the half, and the proud Noll team marched to the dressing room enjoying a 41-20 halftime lead. Russ Marcinek, who was high scorer for the tourney with a 17.6 average and 71 points, hit 8 straight during the net- scorching Noll streak. Six quick points by Norm Fech damp¬ ened all Wildcat hopes of even denting that 21 point halftime lead, and the Warriors continued to roll as they blasted their way to a 60-31 third quarter gap. With more than three minutes of play left in the final quarter, Coach Eddie Hudson cleared the bench. The final score, 78-40, entitled the Noll Warriors to cut down the Sectional nets. The organization is patterned after our own national government in Washington. The executive branch is com¬ posed of a president, vice-president, secretary, and treasurer elected by popular vote in the spring of the preceding school year. Upon assumption of office, the president then appoints his cabinet: the chief justice of the court, a secretary of discipline and safety, and a secretary of social events. The legislative branch consists of the Senate to which each class elects two members. The House of Representatives consists of a representative from each homeroom in school. The judicial branch is composed of the chief justice, appointed by the president, and four judges, one from each class. The court clerk and school reporter complete the members of the Student Administration. This past year the Student Administration endeavored to improve safety conditions at school, sponsored a mock presidential election in the fall in which President Eisen¬ hower won, amended the Constitution, and sponsored several social events. It also took part in the Lake County Student Council Association at the Fifth Annual Congress at Lew Wallace High School, the Purdue Congress, and the State Convention for Student Councils. NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY The National Honor Society has now completed its ninth year at Noll High School. Its function is to create enthusiasm for scholarship, to stimulate a desire to render service, to promote worthy leadership, and to develop character in the students. Members are elected twice a year by the faculty, the following four qualities being the basis of judgment: scholarship, leadership, service, and character. All of these qualities must be manifested in an outstanding degree by the student before he may be elected. Also necessary are the following prerequisites: the completion of two semesters at Noll, and the scholastic standing of the upper third of their respective class. The faculty sponsor for the Marynoll Chapter of the National Honor Society is Sister Dolata. The officers are: Mike Berthold, president; Terri Vichuras, vice-president; Dave Sabo, treasurer; Patti O ' Dowd, secretary. Row 1: D. Wirth, J. Hap, J. Murphy, D. Sabo, P. The halls would be empty of all the colorful posters announcing approaching dances, athletic events, plays, musical programs, etc. Under the sponsorship of Sister Francis Jerome, the girls of the Prop and Publicity Club express their artistic talents in good hard work. In addition to the regular work of advertising school events, the Prop Club decorated a bus for the Shore Line Bus Company last fall, and in so doing won praises for their excellent work. In order to further the students ' interests in the French language and culture, a French Club has been established. Second year French students are eligible for membership and there are representatives from each first year French class. The officers are second year students: president, Prudie Moylan; vice-president, Richard Grot; secretary, Mary Ann Melyon; treasurer, Dan Ryder. The club meets once a month and at each meeting the students give a short program explaining some phase of life in France. Sister Berenice, the club sponsor, encourages corres¬ pondence with French students to further the American Spirit as well as the Noll Spirit among the club members. Row 1 : H. Hiltrop, K. LATIN CLUB In only its second year at Noll, the Latin Club has greatly expanded in membership, prestige, and in a true spirit of fulfilling its purpose as expressed in its motto, Fiat Lux Per Studium — Let There Be Light Through Study . Membership is open to all second year and advanced Latin students. A president, vice-president, secretary, and treasurer are elected in each Latin class as representatives to attend club meetings. This year the club ' s big project was a Roman Pageant consisting of a Roman style show, a short play comparing Roman times with our times, and displays and posters by the students. The benefits of this production went for the purpose of sending representatives to participate in competitive Latin examinations. The Latin Club is sponsored by Sister Ruberta. The officers are Dennis Penny, president; Barbara Rettig, vice-president; Sandra Carlson, secre¬ tary; and Dennis Teles, treasurer. Row 1 : B. McCabe, E. Bouzas, J. Herod, J. Niemiec, J. Costanza, R. REPRESENTATIVES The Christhurst Unit of the Catholic Missions Crusade, a Pontifical Society, is under the leadership and guidance of Sister Dolorine, moder¬ ator. It is the oldest extra-curricular organization at Noll High. Its Charter of Affiliation with the Crusade is dated December 25, 1933. Because of its large membership, meetings are held on the first Friday of each month. In order that the entire student body may participate in the meetings, they are broadcast over the public address system. This year each homeroo mhas designated one representative to take care of all the business transacted within their respective homerooms. This includes the weekly mission collection, the Annual Bishop ' s Clothing Drive, and the food baskets sent to needy families at Thanksgiving and Christmas. 109 C.S.M.C. STUDY CLUB OFFICERS It has been through their eagerness to study, their willingness to self-sacrifice, and their constant prayers that the students at Noll High are most interested in the activities of the missions. Many activities at Noil are sponsored by the C.S.M.C.: a date dance, May Procession, the Living Rosary in October, and a Holy Hour on the First Friday each month. Officers for this year are: William Napiwocki, president; Sandra Gordon, vice-president; Arnold Susorney, treasurer; and Marilyn Quinn, secretary. Row 1: G. Knight, M. Orlowski, M. Quinn, S. This club, although small in membership, performs a most important and generous service each day. These boys assist Father Klein, pastor of St. Margaret Mary ' s Church on the campus, at Mass each morn¬ ing. They also aid the Mission Society in all religious services. Sponsored by Sister Francis de Sales, the Knights of the Altar are dedicated to a better understanding and appreciation of the server ' s participation in the Mass. The officers are Joe Vamos, president; Roger Michna, vice-president; Doyne Hahn, secretary; and Jerry Owczarzak, treasurer. Row 1: R. Michna, J. Vamos, Sister Francis DeSales, D. Hahn, J. Jack. This generous group of young ladies devote an hour each Sunday morning in an effort to bring the Word of God to the grade school children of St. Margaret Mary ' s Church. Their classes now boast a total enrollment of 132 students. Three Noll sisters also contributed their share in this project. They are Sister Francis de Sales, who directs the classes, Sister Francis Jerome and Sister Joseph Frances. As members of the Confraternity of Christian Doctrine, these girls are inspiring examples of Noll ' s cooperation with God ' s plans. Seated: J. CAMERA CLUB One of the hardest working organizations at Noll is the Camera Club. The purpose of this club is to provide pictures of all the ordinary and extraordinary events at Noll, in order that the students may always remember their years spent at Noll High. With this purpose in mind, its activities include taking snapshots of all the school affairs, athletic events, dances, shows, etc., for the Warrior and the Marquette and also for the students who may desire them. Father Bach is the faculty sponsor to the Camera Club, whose mem¬ bership is open to any student who is interested in photography. The officers are: Jim Della Rocco, president; Jim Plenus, vice-president; Joyce Warner, treasurer; Tom Cak, secretary; and Dave Marciniak, sergeant- at-arms. Row 1: A. Saulis, D. Marciniak, T. DEBATE CLUB The Debate Club was organized just this year and membership was confined to Freshmen, Sophomores, and Juniors. The national topic debated all year by high schools was Resolved: that the Federal Govern¬ ment should sustain the prices of maior agricultural commodities at not less than 90 per cent of parity. During the month of December the members went to Purdue for the Indiana High School Debate Conference. While there, eight of the members were in the Extemporaneous Speaking Contest. Bishop Noll High School, as a member of the Indiana High School Forensic Association and the Calumet Forensic League, participated in tournaments throughout the year at various high schools. The club is sponsored by Sister Joseph Francis and in the past year has established a firm foundation for future expansion of its membership and its program. ELECTRONICS CLUB In its first year at Noll High the Electronics Club has become firmly established. The first project undertaken was the discussion of various subjects in Electronics to help several of the club members qualify for Amateur Radio Operator ' s Licenses. Another series of discussions was taken up at the weekly meetings on high fidelity reproduction of music by the members especially interested in planning Hi-Fi systems. Two of its members were assigned the task of providing music at record dances in the gym, recorded music in the cafeteria at lunch hour, and sound facilities for assemblies and other events. The club, whose membership is open to any student interested in any phase of Electronics, is under the sponsorship of its founder. Sister Dolata. FUTURE NURSES OF AMERICA Although it is a new club at Noll, The Future Nurses of America Club has a membership of over fifty girls in the grades ten to twelve, who have expressed an interest in nursing. The purposes of the club are to interest students in personal and community health; to encourage them in finding out what nursing requires and what it offers; to help them decide wisely about professional or practical nursing as their career. With these purposes in mind the aspiring nurses each baked Christ¬ mas cookies for the patients in Mount Mercy Hospital in Dyer. After touring the hospitals in this area, the Future Nurses invited nurses from different fields in the medical profession to their meetings, where the nature and requirements of certain specializations in medicine were ex¬ plained in detail. All members of the club are aided in choosing a nursing school and in deciding the type of nursing they would like as a career. The Future Nurses of America is organized and sponsored by Mrs. Emmagene Josvai, R.N., the school nurse. Student officers are Thyra Pictor, president; Judy Sauer, vice-president; and Judy Kozlowski, secre¬ tary-treasurer. Row 1 : I. Misch, M. Miterko, T. Pictor, S. Detzner, P. Courneya, J. Kozlowski, R. At this meeting it was announced to them that they were to be the monitors of Noll High. It was to be their duty to see to it that order was maintained in the school buildings and on the premises at all times. These students were chosen by the Deans because they felt that they were dependable enough to keep order and discipline at Noll. It was noticeable to the faculty and students as well that these officers of discipline have done their job well. Napiwocki, F. Garcia, M. Wise. Row 3: R. Zdziarski, B. Segodovic, D. Spring, R. With Sister Georgia as their director, the mem¬ bers have assembled a telescope, made charts of the stellar constellations, drawn weather maps, and discussed the effects of atmospheric conditions on our own weather. The club members also visited the Adler Planetarium in Chicago. Since this past year was the first year for the Astronomy Club at Noll High, the members also considered the purchase of books in this field to aid them in the study of astronomy. By employing the means of lectures, demonstrations, and movies per¬ taining to their particular subjects, the members are able to learn the how , why , and when in regard to the application of this attitude. During the meetings the members also gain practical experience in their field of endeavor. Sister Gabrielita is sponsor of the Tri-Opus Club. The editor, Judy Habrych, and staff members take an active part in all activities and keep the students up-to-date on the current events of Noll High. MARQUETTE STAFF The yearbook of Noll High serves as a literary and pictorial record of the events of the current school year. The Marquette Staff compiles, edits, and produces the annual which contains a permanent record of the faculty and student body, the athletic and extra-curricular activities, and all other memorable events. The processing of a yearbook of these dimensions is a tedious task, requiring many hours after school for its production. Father Seimetz is the faculty adviser to the Marquette Staff, chosen exclusively from the seniors who volunteer their services. The co-editors. Bob Ennis and Mary Arden Hauer, express special thanks to Father Bach and the Camera Club for their many hours spent in photographic work for the 1957 Marquette. Row 1 : K. Younkers, B.
