They meet regularly to write letters on behalf of people who are tortured and impris- oned solely because of their political and religious convictions. They write to countries such as South Africa, the U.S.S.R., El Salvador and Guate- mala, requesting better treatment and an end to human rights abuses. Amnesty International ' s success rate is encouraging: in 60% of their cases there is significant improve- ment in the treatment of prisoners. 44
