There was a variety of assemblies but the majority of them were to spirit the fans before a sports activitiy. Aside from the sports assemblies, there were a few educational as- semblies ranging from singer Chuck Bissett to practical techniques of karate. A major event for Luers is the Annual Christmas Drive. An assembly is held at the close of the drive and the money, food, and clothing were handed over to the Christmas bureau and Catholic Charities. A total of $2358 was collected by the student body. This project was headed by Fr. Vernon, Mr. Matthews, and Ms. Lombardo. A feeling of belonging was shared. Devotion to the cause grew. Goals were achieved. Acceptance of responsibility was learn- ed. Nor were the members the only ones to reap the benefits. At Bishop Luers, the students and faculty all profited from their various achievements. Because of these organizations, the dress code was changed, money was collected, raffle tickets sold, news- papers published, and Luers was a cleaner place. Thank you members. Wayne, In. News Staff Reports BISHOP LUERS ( AP) - B.LH.S. students were fortunate in having the opportunity to read the informative Knight Light ' s newspaper every 2 weeks of the 74-75 school year. Co-editors Cathy Husar and Kevin Becker put together a super paper with all important Luers news items, featuring current events, editorials, cartoons, sports, with photos of all events. The paper was paid for out of advertising by various sponsors. Paste- ups were held every other Tuesday night, Mrs. Powell typed the articles and Brother Louie printed the paper in time for students to read every other Friday. Several students writers also wrote for the paper which contributed to it ' s success. Several years ago, during my college days, I belonged to a fraternity. The people who decided to join our fraternity were called pledges and, as such, were often subjected to a ritual called hazing . One day, one active member was really giving it to a pledge. After that pledge ( a really inactive and out-of-shape person) had done at least fifty push- ups, jogged two miles, cleaned up the house, recited the fraternity motto in Pig Latin, and brought us each a beer, the active bellowed at the pledge, Pledge, have you been singing the praises of the fraternity? To which the poor, lowly, fellow replied, Sir, I don ' t believe I know that song. That pledge has some things in common with the 1975 Accolade staff. Like the pledge, this staff has had to do much demanding work. Like the pledge, it has had its share of the ridiculous. Like him, it to, has had to bear hassels similar to hazing . And, as the pledge was part of something great, so, too is my yearbook staff. The theme of this year ' s book is 74-75, the year that made the difference. How appropriate this title is! Readers, you will never again experience another year like this. Like you, it is unique. For each per- son, 1975 holds some life long memories whether they be school oriented or personal. Our task, in putting this book together, is to capture as many of these memories as possible. This job is a labor of love. The staff receives little praise and less recognition. There are no lavish banquets, letter jackets, or scholar- ships. Their only motivation is pride — pride in doing a good job, pride in Luers, and pride in themselves. I want to single out two individuals for particular praise — Louise Still, Editor-in-Chief, and Beth Braun, Assistant Editor. I wish you all knew how hard these two have worked. And what a job they did! I would like to thank them and the entire staff for making my job an easy one. Truly, the 1975 Accolade is different where it counts. There is a vital difference, however. Unlike the pledge, this staff knows the song . Its major reason for existing is to praise Bishop Luers. How well they have done their job is for you, the reader, to Good luck and God bless you all! Clubs 63 SPORTS SPORTS SPORTS SPORTS SPORTS SPORTS SPORTS SPORTS SPORTS SPORTS SPORTS I SPORTS SPORTS SPORTS 64 Division Luers offers a varied athletic program. In addition to basketball and football, our fans can participate in track, baseball, golf, Softball, volleyball, tennis and a fine intramural program. What made the 1974-75 athletic year different from the others? No season is a repeat of the previous one. Before you continue into this section, stop and reflect on your thoughts of the 1974- 75 season. We hope we ' ve captured the difference you ' re looking for. A yearbook contains memories of past events. The importance of each event lies in each individual fan or athlete. To some, the major event was the BD snow game, the development of bodies, the spirit of cooperation, the fulfillment of good times with friends. To others, it was the building of character, lasting memories. South Side going to the championship game, the growth of women ' s sports, a little sunshine and big wins. So the athletic seasons end each year with the thought that it wasn ' t always a breeze but then neither is life. Truly, 1974-75 was the year that made the difference. The Accolade says, Good Luck! to the fans and jocks in the future. The Bishop Luers High School ' s softball team displayed a fine combination of hardwork, team effort and sportsmanship during their 1974 season. A major factor this season was the outstanding seniors. These ladies not only displayed team leadership and guidance but also a sense of direction and poise for their teammates. I would sincerely like to thank the 1974 Softball team for their cooperation and assistance. The group responsible for helping to generate and keep this spirit alive is the Cheerleaders. The 1974- 75 Cheerleaders put in countless hours of hard work planning pep sessions, decorating the school, organizing spirit-boosting activities, and cheering at games, to support and encourage the school ' s athletic teams. As a team themselves, the Cheerleaders competed at the United States Cheerleader ' s Association ' s summer Camps All-American, where both the Varsity and the Reserve squads won ribbons. Junior Angle Hicks won a 5th place individual trophy, and the Varsity won a 4th place team trophy. The Varsity group progressed to win a position among the Top Twenty cheerleading teams in the nati on, at the U.S.C.A. These girls, Sheila Connolly, Joanie Imler, Paula Moisica, Laura Rehm, and Kathy Renninger rep- resented Luers in the long jump, high jump, 440 yd. dash, and 880 medley relay events. Sports 93 74-75 Baseball Team Reaches Semi-State Finals This has been a great season for Bishop Luers baseball. The first highlight of the season was a victory over Cincinnati Bacon. This was the first time Luers beat Bacon in any sports event. Also early in the year Butch Wickensheimer pitched a no-hitter against South Adams. Later in the year Don Converset was able to hit in 25 consecutive games. This established a record which will be difficult to break. The high points of the last part of the season were winning the Sectional and Regional. I hope that the winning tradition which this team has established will carry on in future years. Sports 99 Intramural Program Gets Underway in 75 This year the Student Congress created an organization entitled Intramurals. Its purpose was to participate in athletics without competing against other schools. Heading this project was Mike Costin, Chuck Ruckel, Dave Schuhler, and Marc Hedges. The activities were held on Tuesday and Thursday mornings at 7:00 in the gym. Those who participated signed up previously during lunch mods. The program began in February and it started off with a volleyball tournament, followed by basketball and handball. The winners of the tournament received trophies. This program was open to all four classes and seemed to be appreciated by all. 100 Sports Athletic Season Ends With Great Triumphs Sports 101 PEOPLE PEOPLE PEOPLE PEOPLE PEOPLE PEOPLE PEOPLE PEOPLE PEOPLE PEOPLE PEOPLE PEOPLE PEOPLE PEOPLE 102 Division To the people who already attend Luers every year is always the same — this year seemed to follow the pattern. Orientation put an abrupt halt to the lazy summer months. Schedule conflicts pre- sented perplexing problems for all. Soon we had settled into the routine of classes. You might not have realized it, but there were many things that were very different about 1974-75 — in particular the people. Luers is extremely lucky to have so many unique and talented individuals. It ' s the people here who form that great presence called spirit which was especially evident during Homecoming Week and the sports season. The originality in the skits and hall decorations was something special. There were many other things that have come about thanks to the people at Luers — we had Student Congress Co-Presidents, a Clean Hall Award and many interesting and productive organizations. Throughout the school year the office of the Deans became inhabited by the new face of Father Carl who replaced the departing Mr. Mauch. Stu- dent teachers, nervous as they were, made good impressions on the students. As you look over this section, keep in mind how special each person in this school is, and what it would be like if we didn ' t have them. It ' s impossible for me to express all the trials and tribulations the 74-75 staff wen t through in order to produce this book. However, I feel it was worth it. 74-75 the year that made the difference. Our theme. I believed very strongly in our purpose. I feel the theme expressed exactly what you the reader would be looking for. THE DIFFERENCE, made 74-75 unique and memorable. I would sincerely like to thank Tony Skevington, Fr. Carl, and Bill Weber, for the time they devoted to photography and for a fantastic job. It ' s hard for me to say thanks to Mr. Cole. We ' ve worked together on the Accolade for 3 yrs. During that time he stood by us with guidance, moral support, and the backing of the Journalism Depart- ment. All I can say is Luers is very fortunate to have such a beauti- ful person on their teaching staff. The greatest value I gained from being a part of the yearbook staff was the friendships that developed between my fellow pubbers. You were great. I love you all and you are what I ' ll miss the most, (Knight Lights also). I would like to close by wishing the 75-76 staff the best of luck. My only hope is that someday the Bishop Luers Journalism Department will be as well known and appreciated as the Bishop Luers Athletic Department. It was a great experience for me to be editor. I ' ll cherish it forever. Marita, I did it! Still, Louise i ■ i -, u
