HE third of the vocations, the married state,
is the type of life to which most men are
called. Instituted by God in the Garden of
Paradise and sanctified by Christ at Cana,
the married life and its end result, the
family, are the foundation of a civilization and
the strength of any nation.
Knowing this, it can easily be judged that the
prime duty of any man in this state is to his
family. He must not only provide for their
worldly necessities, but also must lay a firm
foundation for their spiritual future by pointing
them directly toward God and their eternal
Of course, a married man may accomplish
many other deeds pleasing to God. Work in the
Lay Apostolate, the Holy Name Society, or some
other church activity will increase the reward
of paradise, but none of these is as pressing a duty
as is his obligation to see to the welfare of those
under his care, for he will be held directly re-
sponsible for those whom God has placed in
