Realizing that time is bound to cloud our memories of these days, we have endeavored to put the highlights down, in this our yearbook. The theme we have adapted for our book is a picture of the rise and development of the Catholic Educational System in the Diocese of Brooklyn. Though we have striven to record the seemingly commonplace things which have made up our days here, we realize that words alone cannot depict the joys and sorrows of such an intergral part of our youth. 1' W I The editors of the 1953 Loughlinite humbly dedicate this our yearbook to Archbishop Thomas E. Molloy on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Diocese of Brooklyn. There is no adequate way to express our feelings toward you, Your Excellency, through whose efforts we were privileged to experience four years of Catholic High School Education. So it is with good faith that we dedicate this book to you and hope you will accept with it our gratitude for the four years of pleasure and achievement which it seeks to represent. Brother fosters and di- rects research into a variety of subjects by the boys. By means of sample questions from previous scholar- ship tests Brother supplements the research work of his charges and gives them actual experience with the tests they are preparing to take. The club emphasizes the importance of outside reading, including the reading of the daily newspapers. Members of the Scholarship Club sit not only for the exams of schools such as Manhattan, St. johns and-Fordham, but also engage with success in the Hearst History Contest and Westinghouse Scholar- ship Competition. Constant diligence and oil-burn- ing on the part of the boys has borne fruit. In the winter competition for the scholarships offered by St. Johns the Lion brain-trusters garnered six of eight prizes, an impressive record, indeed. Brother Knows Besl' Remember lhaf! The book serves to bring back memories of one's high school career in later life. This year's book has as its main theme the celebration of the Centennial Year of the Brooklyn Diocese. Throughout the book the out- standing leaders of the hundred years are honored. When the book appears in late spring, the student receives it casually. However, through investigation within, he finds the book quite complicated. He then realizes that the creation of the book took imaina- tion, skill and patience. His realization is true, for there are many tasks involved, endless photographic work, page layout and proof reading. This work could never have been accomplished without the able guidance of the Moderator, Brother Peter. This year's book was skillfully edited by Bob Lynn in the fall term and John Rowan in the spring term. These editors-in-chief were assisted by sub-editors who, along with the complete staff, have presented to the senior class one of the finest books in the annals of Bishop Loughlin High School. C. At quarter past eleven and twelve o'c1ock each day, there is a rush for the cafeteria, the coveted prize usually being an eclaire or a well- cooked hot dog. The squad keeps a big assortment of sandwiches, hot dishes, pies and milk on the counter in order to lessen the intensity and momentum of the lunch rush. After the rush is over, however, the work of the Service Squad is only half done, for there now re- mains the cleanup. The food must be stored, the trash trucked away, and each nook and corner of the cafe- teria must be scrubbed immaculately clean for the next day. But each and every member of the Service Squad is content, for they know a well-fed student is a bet- ter student here at Loughlin. l800 guys and 3 dogs A E-fi The gang s all here ? 1' Wish you were here .v 6 4 4' uw- Qu J 'QM' Oh' Happy Day ,Z Whnppmg uf up SLOPPY JOES BAR On fhe house Bocxtmde As rroppmg to 1 yur of htrd study tht Lxons and Lnontsses step out for 1 d ry of sulmg md mem ment Our yacht the Amerrtt, ltnts her slnp at the Battery about 9 00 1nd arrnes tt Pl tyl 1nd xn the VlLlIllIy of ll OO Mrny of the l.0LlgllllI1lILS hctd stralght for the blth houses md m mrly swlm lor those who are less VlgOfOLlS the mxny sndt shows are a drawing tird The fades open II l O0 md with rn a short tlme the Purple md bold rs to be seen throughout the plcl-c enjoyxng thc. Brother joseph, with the support of some veteran cheerleaders, reor- ganized the cheerleader club. A group of new boys applied for admission into the clubg among them were joseph Greco, joseph Kiefer, Vincent Seva, Earl Davis, john Duchett, john Guglielmo, Thomas Mc- Gorthy, Stephen Batthany. Leo the I.ion was given .i stiff workout by joseph Kiefer, while ploseph Cireco called the cheers. A new method of rotation was de- vised by the moderator which allowed for a four boy shift alternating between each game. Some new cheers were invoked this year for use in the CATHOLIC INDOOR TRACK meet at Madi- son Square Garden. The new cheers were Grrg Fightg Bugleg Fighrg Slcyroclcetg Yea, Purple, Yea, Gold. The ability and enthusiasm of all the cheerleaders in lead- ing the Loughlin roorers through the famous Ili-if' Come A Rebou and Locomotive cheers, greatly in- fluenced the victory of many an event. Come-a-ribo 1-landbaff Paced by last year's medal winners, James Miller and Nelson Gendusa, the handball team was again trying to win the Catholic High School Athletic Lca- gue Championship and the Private Schools Champi- onship, The team won the Privates' Championship at Red Hook Stadium with Ray Grossman and Ben jasko winning the doubles championship. This pair also went on to win the doubles championship at the Catholic School meet, with james Miller and Nelson Gendusa coming in second. Although the team had lost four Seniors, they are ably representated by a new group of Wallmen. These included Thomas Mallet, john Moran, john Commerton, Paul Cosgrove, Frank Selenger, William Leonard, and john Burke. joe Klonowski has succeeded Ben jaskow as captain and the team was looking forward to another champion- ship year. After a disheartening setback in the Round Robin Meet with St. Francis and Brooklyn Prep, the Varsity came back to win the C.H.S.A.A. Swimming Cham- pionship. The pinmen are very eapably moderated by Brother A. Phillip. Tony Oliveri. their non-playing captain, handles his scoring and starting duties very admir- ably. The starting live usually consists of Duke W'alsh, Mike McGuire, joe Guinta, john Traynor, and Ronnie Creagh. Having lost Clreagh through graduation, the team hopes that someone will be able to fill his shoes. The rest of the squad consists of jess Stone, Al Neville, Ed Kazanecki, and Frank Stone, a freshman who has shown brilliant promise. The team has had victories over Trinity, St. Francis, St. Leonard, St. Michaels, and St. johns. Their toughest opponent seems to be the Redmen of St. johns. The team is one of the soundest ever produced at Loughlin. Each man qualified with better than a 150 average. l.oughlin's high game of the year is credited to Duke Wtilsh, having rolled a brilliant 209 against St. Francis. Mike McGuire, after a bad start, linally came back to his original form and started scoring like the bowler of old. H. S. A.. A. indoor meet fresh in their minds, the track team began the outdoor season with two stiring victories at Penn. Tabbed by the sports writers to be the weakest team Loughlin has ever sent down, the runners swept both relays in fine fashion on opening day. The big win was in the 440 yard relay in which the team of Goode, Boll, Hayes and Cassell, nipped Boys High at the tape. The distance medley race con- tinued to be a Loughlin monopoly and the team of Bolan, Douglas, McManus and Sbarra waded home to victory. The borough crown was taken again by the Lions with a 60 point margin over their nearest competitor, St, Augustines. The following meet, the Privates, proved much tougher for the squad. Cassell, Sbarra and Cryer won their events in the 100 yd., the mile run, and hurdles, respectively. With Hayes getting stronger in all the events, the outlook for the outdoor CH. S. A. A. meet looked bad, but again the team with heavy scoring in the late events retired the crown to the halls of Loughlin. In the past, Loughlin's Track Team has been suc- cessful because of its fine showing in the Feld Events. On the average the field team scored eight points and Isl Row ll. fo r.l-C. Biers, J. Meef as in the Stuyvesant Meet this constituted more than half the winning total of 17 points. In the high.jump C. Hanley, scored three points in the N. Y. U. Meet, four points in the Stuyvesant Meet and five points in the Hayes Meet. Ken Daly also aided the Loughlin cause in the Relay Carnival. Tony Froelick, who scored in the Brooklyn Catholics in the pole vault, and Chris Conlon round out the senior jumpers. Frank Houghton did an equally admirable job in the shot put. He scored two firsts in the N. Y. U. Meet. Other muscle men who lent their talents to the team are Ken Hedlund, who scored in the Out- door Catholics in the javelin, joe Page, who took a first in the javelin and a fourth in the shot in the Outdoor Privates, and Charlie Harms, who rounded off Lough1in's seven points in the shot with a fifth. The indoor season began in fine fashion with a win in the Stuyvesant meet. A second place in the 100 and the 880 relay was all the scoring in the running events the Lions needed to win by a 17 to 12 count over Boys High. Injuries to Feltmate and Williams hurt the team badly in the following meets. Consis- tant scoring in the field events and the 880 yd. relay was enough to bring home a trophy each time. With six first places the tracksters overcame all opposition. The two mile relay team of McDonald, McAllister, Walsh and Kelly broke their novice while Larry Waterhouse captured the mile run. In the field events Bennie Lothe and Kev Aucher scored first in the high pump and javelin, respectively. With the loss of winners of the outdoor novice team, Brother Raphael formed a new team, which scored first in a medlay relay at the Carnival. J.V. TRACK: Isl' Row U. fo r.l-F. Schneider, F. As in the past Cardinal Hayes was the top contender for the CHSAA Fresh- man championship with Loughlin close behind. When the meet finally became a reality Loughlin showed strong opposi- tion, with the 660 yard relay team of Cirincione, Graham, Kennedy and McCafTery. In the 440 yard relay Pouvet, Weiegn, Finneran and Bihl scored third, while J. Baxter and G. Muschie finished first and fourth in the individual mile. Because of failure to show strength in the 50 yard and 220 yard dash, the Freshmen failed to capture first, but took a close second. In the future track events at Loughlin, R. Stanley, M. Gyves and E. Rigney will garner most of I.oughlin's field points. Schapperf brings home the bacon lsi Row ll. lo r.l--Brolher Maurice, M. McBride, T. Walsh, J. McGuinness, M. Garvey, J. Maloney, K. McCarthy' who give up only nine hits in the three post-season games wiffed eight and walked but one. This year the team was managed by the very Cap- Broiher Beneduci accepts our trophy Baseball able Brother Lawrence, since the former Coach Mr. O'Donnell, is no longer with the team. The Loughlin nine opened the '52 season with St. Augustine. Dan McCarthy started for Loughlin while jack McQuade was sent to the mound for St. Augus- tine. Bad support and hazy control sent McCarthy to the showers. He was replaced by Walt McTague. Mc- Carthy gave up six hits and walked seven, while McQuade's fast ball proved to be the major factor for his no-hitter, since he racked up eleven strike-outs to help his club to a 4-2 victory. Loughlin scored on 2 errors and 6 bases on balls. After this rocky start the Lions went on to beat Brooklyn Prep to the tune of 7-2 with Walt Mc- Tague, Bill johnson and Tom Flaherty starring. This led to a 3-hit shut out over Trinity by the Loughlin nine, with Dan McCarthy applying the whitewash. The Lions scored four times in the first frame and went on to notch another marker to end the scoring at 5-0. Tom Leavy led the lion 9-hit attack with two extra-base hits. The Varsity 9, rolling under a full head of steam, beat St. Michaels by a l-4 count, with Tom Carroll getting three hits, while Bill Boland and Walt McTague limited the losers to five hits. Loughlin then marched triumphantly over their arch rivals, St. johns, by a 5-4 score. To win, how- -' - scones' Sf. Augustine 4 ......,...............,............. Lou hlin 2 Sf.
