Why, with- out the consideration and care exhibited by this lad, it would be impossible to keep our school running smoothly and remaining as immaculately clean as it is. W'ho, but the Freshman, has the courage and stamina to volunteer, unhesitatingly, his time and effort for the cause of cleanliness in Loughlin? And who, but this, our faithful cherub, devotes so many hours of his valuable time in fulfilling requests for black chalk for the fifth floor, or in fetching buckets of steam from the cellar pool? To this energetic, little atomic-dynamo, therefore. the students, as well as the teachers, owe much, and their debts are paid in various ways. The students, exemplified especially by the senior members, express their heartfelt gratitude by keep- ing their younger brother from falling into error. They save him embarrassment and dishonor in later life by teaching him to show respect to his elders. This is accomplished by the simple method of dem- onstrating to him the wisdom of exhibiting defer- ence to the Student Councilor-that true friend of the younger Loughlinites u'ho is always willing to give his all in aiding the poor unfortunates in correct- ing themselves. Moreover, it is only through the combined effort of these two extremities of student life at Loughlin -the Student Councilor and the Freshman-that our school moves along as well as it does- the latter al- ways willing to help in keeping our establishment clean, and the former industriously showing him how to do it, by aiding him to locate the remotest speck and stain. If his fellow Loughlinites are so thoughtful of the proper development of his external traits, certainly the Brothers and the members of the lay faculty are just as considerate of his mental development. It is only the Freshman who carries home so many books, and is granted the opportunity to achieve profciency in his scholastic labors, through the medium of an ample and diversifed homework. On the whole, therefore, this newcomer is most fortunate. His position is the envy of every strata of students, for of all those present, he, and only he, can look forward to four full, inspiring years, basking in THE GLORY THAT IVAS ST. Gee, look at that little runt. l'7 Yes, the Sophomore is one who is not totally with- out nor yet wholly within the fold. Indeed, his is a curious position. He has survived the anguish of his first year but directly ahead lies an impediment to his entry into his third year-the Regents-the first real test by which he will venture to convince everyone that he is capable of success. To his young, developing intellect, it is difficult to comprehend why the Greek, Euclid, spent his spare moments meditating on the figures viewed by his mind's eye, instead of the kind that could be seen with such enjoyment by his ophthalmic organs. Nor can he understand why the French speak French. It would have been so much simpler for them to speak English: then everyone could understand them. He also learned from his Wforld History that the Latins killed Caesar, and now he is convinced that it is killing him. However, all is not darkness in the life of the Sophomore. Though he has to face such obstacles as those mentioned above, nevertheless, he occassionally witnesses such treasured moments of happiness, as having the varsity coach call him by his first name and Brother tell him that he would soon have to make his very own decision, on whether he would continue with his Academic subjects. or would choose to begin studying in the Commercial course. This certainly requires quite a bit of cross questioning of the older fellows during his new first-lunch-period session. But, regardless of how often he may falter, or how deeply he may allow his mistakes to sink him, he will proceed with courage-constantly mustering all his strength towards that final goal, that pinnacle of success, that recognition of victory -graduation! xl 1 v . It too contains an element of adventure in that, the Loug- linite now separates himself from his friends of two years, and makes the acquaintance of students, whom he has often seen, but has never met or sat with in class. For this is the time when the advancing youths discover and explore new fields - some Academic: others Commercial. However, whatever apprehension is present in the third year, it is more than balanced by the joys and pleasures tasted by the Junior. To him life has be- come shining and bright. With the type of self- assurance he receives whenever he views the Fresh- man, he realizes that at last he has become a solid citizen of Laughlin-that he now belongs to the upper classes. This belonging he repeatedly manifests through the Purple and Gold colors of the school sweater he is now entitled to wear,-and especially through the large golden L, which stands out so eminently on that sweater. The varsity letter that has been won through the sweat and tears of many hard, gruelling days of practice, is something to be worn proudlyg and, regardless of how many years will pass, the din and bedlam of the crowd roaring in his ears will never be forgotten. However, all the joys and pleasures of the Junior are not confined solely to the walls of Laughlin. There is a satisfactory amount of a new type of freshness to be found after 3:00, but it is sometimes strange and difficult to comprehend how his sister's friends have become so nice all of a sudden. Attempts are even made to invite them to the next junior Sport Hop. Above and beyond the afore-mentioned extra-cur- ricular activities, the Junior must concentrate on his schooling and cope with scholarly problems. He is weighed down by laws of bouyancy, perplexed by the imaginative root of quadratic x, and longs for the day when he will no longer be too young to vote in the School elections. At Loughlin, he is granted certain interwoven du- ties and privileges which form the web of dreams for many lower classmen. He possesses the right and duty to partake of specified legislative, judicial and executive functions. He makes laws through the Stu- dent Congress, enforces them through the Student Council, and metes out punishment to any transgres- sors of these through the Student Court. There is one other advantage held by the Seniorf a privilege granted him through the benevolency of his headmaster-the efficacy of which will never be denied by any Loughlinite-the Senior Lounge. It is here, where he meets with his fellow wheels and, forgetting Cthough only momentarily! his usual heed- fulness for, and preoccupation with, his pedagogical alter ego, discources on what parents call lighter top- ics but which hold for him utmost interest: last night's date. Ifriday's big game, the forthcoming Prom, and that swell hot rod he saw last week for only 325. However, regardless of the advantages of his posi- tion and the feeling of being a supreme deity when- ever an awe struck Freshman looks his u'ay,the Senior is forced to recall his own current perplexities that require hard-headed solving. He is confused by the chaotic state of the world which he is about to enter. This confusion is further intensified hy his determi- nation to crystalize the ideals presented in the se- curity of the class roonz, but which find dimculty functioning in an insecure time, In spite of all his pre-induction training and guidance self-analysis exams, he still has trouble making a decision concern- ing his future, his college work, and the draft situa- tion, because all are so tied together. It is practically impossible to separate them and look at each one in a different light. Yes indeed, though he now lords it over the Fresh- man, nonetheless, he has not rid himself of all his fears, and he faces the world with a great deal of apprehension. It is true that the Senior has now be- come a man and has put away the things of a child, but by the same token he has shouldered the re- sponsibilities of a man and must now bear them in a fashion befitting a Brother's hoy -a Christ-like man.
