The Cross-Country team could not have turned in a winning season were it not for the likes of Hession, Mulligan, Colligan, Lappin, Kaufman, Ramoino, Murphy, Driscoll and Soph, Al Ray. To bolster these were such stellar performers as McTigue and Ray Shervell. The indoor season was marked by superlative relay performances by a so called weak Purple and Gold squad. Can anyone forget the 6 lap relay in the Garden, where a quartet of Marsh, Bell, Mergens and the Frosh Flash, Vernon Dixon came from behind to take this title for the first time in five years, or the stirring garrison finish of Marion Dowden in the same meet? With such runners as Ron and Roy Lucas, O'Hara, Mullins, Fagella, Campbell, Croagan, Tadler, Bercuk and Kubic, Loughlin was always sure of much-needed points. Individually, Bill Priess, Don Lohr, Tom Collins, Randazzo, Schumacher and Doody were superlative for the Purple and Gold. f X ' l The story cf the Cathol L5 Loughlin beats Hayes if -'ali-if ,., IQ . .Y,,a.3,,3' . . .ffl . Campbell. Front: J. Rohan, A. Lang, R. Sweeney. This year's varsity wallmen started off with a serious hinderance-the lack of an experi- enced team. Hit hard by graduation, the Lions had only Jack Rohan, jim Campbell and Bob Shannon returning from last year's C.H.S.A.A. champions. However, Brother Adolphus joseph, the coach, secured a number of juniors and sophs, through tournaments conducted in the fall, to round out his varsity. The team had to defend its Catholic High School trophy won last sea- son from Power Memorial. Hayes and St. Francis along with Power loomed as the chief threats to our title. Brother joseph announced that the hold- overs, Campbell, Rohan and Shannon were to be the singles players. The doubles teams and the alternates were chosen from among Sweeny, Castelli, De Costanza, McEvi1y, Tobin, O'Donnell, Trol, Butler and Glucs. After a series of practice meets, the team entered the Private Schools' Meet held at Central Park. Last year the Lions finished second to Power. The big tournament, the Catholic High Schools contest, followed. As defending champs, the Lions were favored to emerge victorious. The team's play throughout the tourna- ment exhibited the typical Loughlin spirite lots of hustle and plenty of fight. The four courts in the school yard provide the opportunity for underclassmen to sharpen up their game and try out for the varsity. Interclass rivalries maintain spirited competi- tion during the lunch hour and after school games. Brother Joseph is constantly on the alert for talent produced during these games. , nl ew' O X bil Wx 95 Left to Right lst Row Mells Cezne, Mr. O'Donnell, coach, Brother Peter, Moderator: Belmont Kenny 2nd Row Calvella Lannigan, Brady, Hamber, Harrington, Vaines, Fitzgerald. 3rd Row Crawford Shea Botteri Feerick, Kearney, Naton. 4th Row: Quinn, Wentz, Farrell, Mgr Collins Mgr McCarthy Mgr French, Saledino. Not since Mr. Marty O'Donnell first took the reins at Loughlin, in 1944, has he ever assembled such a team. A real heavy hitting and good fielding team always took the field for the Loughlin nine. but this year's team was well packed with talent as Could be seen with the battles that took place for each position. 1 .,..,-f' I . . if I' gi. g., ' ,539 if ,i A Q . lj! The Junior Varsity teams have always been a credit to Loughlin. Since most of the J. V. nine have been moved up to the varsity we can only praise the teams moderator, coach, manager, and anything else that is needed on a team, Brother A. James. Many years ago Brother James came to Loughlin as a Latin teacher, and when he came, a man came into Loughlin who proved to be one of the most famous and popular Brothers that ever walked the hallowed halls of Loughlin. This has been proved time and time again by the number of ballplayers that have come up to the varsity. Joe Fitzgerald, the Varsity Captain, started his playing under Brother James, and the same for the rest of the infield of this year's Varsity. So we can bid Brother James good luck, and again thank him for his fme work with the J. V. nine, and hope the Lion's roar will bring luck for his J. V. Nine. Brady in a dive. 74a Sea .fiona Patience and Practice. Keeping these two thoughts in mind, Brother Amelian joseph and Mr. Harry Benvenuto worked all season to make the swimming team the success that it was. At the beginning of the season the coaching staff was confronted with the serious problem of building up practically a new team. The only remaining veterans from the previous season were Captain Willie Bickard, Mike Quinn, Joe Brady, Percy Nicholas, Joe Los and Ed Nelson. As good coaches know, a strong swimming team must consist of at least 15 top notch swimmers. The question that faced Brother and Mr. Benvenuto was where to obtain at least 10 more competent natators. Brother Joseph knew that the undergrads would not only make the team victorious this year, but would keep the team on top for many years to come. From the freshmen year he enrolled Richard Rack, Edward McGill, Richard Moebus, Roger Nolan, Harold Cros- by, Donald Kinney and Anthony Stockert. Two outstanding swimmers from this group are Richard Rack, who is a member of the 200 yard relay and Edward McGill an out- standing backstroker. From the sophomore year Brother obtained Ed Nelson, Joe Los, William Quinn, joseph Horne, Richard Kas- koun, and Robert Bernert. Responding to the call from the junior year were Willie Bickard, Mike Quinn, joe Brady, Jim Rooney, Arty Swanson, Barry McManus, and Robert Dancanson. Not to be sold short, the senior year was well represent- ed by john Nicholas, jim Noonan, john La- mot, john Donahue, jim Bertrand, Tony Alta- murra, joe Mehegan, joe Macy, George Han- lay and Jim Neerincx. l . 1 J .X f 'fx .a-if I ramswaaxggagia- . -, P QA? H t 74a Santee Although its work is not a new branch of activity, the Service Squad is a recent organi- zation at Loughlin and in the past year has made its mark as a boon to the school as a student organization. Early in 1947 it was decided that the Student Council would sur- render its duties in the kitchen and behind the counter and that these duties would be taken over by another group, namely the Service Squad. Since that time, under the guidance of Brother Andrew, the Squad has operated in- dependently of the Council and has done such a fine job that it has become a welcomed and even necessary institution here in school. As a result of the split into two organizations, the Council maintains law and order while the Service Squad takes care of all the hard work of selling ice cream, sizzling hot dogs, serving the faculty and, among other things, dishing out spaghetti, chow mein and what have you. To be frank about it, the apron- detail takes on all kinds of jobs to aid Chef Bob and his very efficient but likewise very genial staff. 4 v w -. f .1 f 4 L gf! 1' gm- -A-li 1 6 Kaz 1 af?-' 4 5 iff 1' of , -L9-' A ,rkiofyflw ly, . 1 ' e is , , J' ,Q H-'A wi , 'V Q' if ,i 'K r Oudema The combined efforts of approximately thirty boys makes the orchestra rank high in the extra-curricular activities at the school. Memberships are limited to the top ten percent of the student body with the added condition of active participation in at least one extra-curricular activity. They are awarded semi-annually by the principal on the recommendations of the faculty. The right fn wear fl-ip gold and white pin of this society is the highest mark of recognition of scholastic excellence that can be bestowed on a student, and carries with it a number of valuable privileges. As an added compensation and impetus for the extra study which must be done to attain this honor, the principal and moderator of the Society, Brother Aquilinus Joseph, has granted members the privilege of asking their teachers for exemptions from the midterm exams. Also, for every time that a boy attains Leo, a notation is made on his permanent record card. If he receives several such notations during his stay at Loughlin, he is virtually assured of being accepted by almost any college. There is a further advantage of membership in that it automatically makes one eligible for mem- bership in the Student Council and Scholarship Club in the Senior year. Among the present graduates, representatives in the Leo Honor Society from the January class are: Thomas Abrahams, justin Bolger, John Connolly, John Cuddahy, Anthony diBuono,-Ioseph Finger, Thomas Gehm,James Herbert, Robert Hoelfner, john Hyland, Frederick Lang, William Owens, Anthony Schlosser, Louis Somma, Abraham Ward, and Edward Young. And from the june class: Samuel Campbell, Peter Daniels, Robert Driscoll, James Gaffney, Stanley Gaither, Michael Halford, Vincent Hussian, Martin Lieblang, Joseph Mehegan, Edward Mergens, Augustine Mosso, joseph O'Donnell, Thomas Ramoino, John Riggio, John Rohan, Angelo Santoro, Frederick Schulein, Robert Snell, Vincent Trost, and john Zahn. 118 7 S ' Comes the quarter of three dismissal bell, and many scholastically minded seniors take themselves to the sanctuary of knowledge, which is none other than the humble abode of a versatile organization-the Scholarship Club. Brother Gabriel, its moderator, can well boast of his boys, because through the training he has given them, they have not once failed to show their abilities in the many aspects of later life. Many Brothers' boys will leave Loughlin for the higher fields of education. Where their matriculation will center is the prime purpose of Brother Gabriel's help in the way of preparation through repetition. By affording his members a chance of acquaintance with the varied types of examinations to be faced in the entrance to colleges, Brother has bettered their chances for scholastic attainment in the field of higher education. If confidence, as well as ability, is second to none for the winning of a scholarship, again Brother Gabriel has not faltered in his purpose, nor have his boys. Much success has been met with in the scholarship tests conducted by the New York State Regents, The Knights of Columbus, and the Pepsi Cola Com- pany, as well as those conducted by the colleges of Fordham, Manhattan, St. John's and St. Francis. The attainment of these two latter scholarships was accomplished this past December by Arthur Schlosser of 125 and Anthony DiBuono of 414, who will matriculate at St. John's and by Francis Cuddahy of 416, who will Find a haven in the halls of St. Francis. Likewise, the N. R. O. T. C. Scholarship, which is the Navy-sponsored educa- tional program, has been received by many Loughlin seniors with enthusiastic response. Acceptance in this program entitles a student, under the auspices of the U. S. Navy, to a full four year college course in any of the specified colleges in the country. At the present writing, the results of the past examination are un- known. Because a high percentage of students passing the mental tests were also able to pass the strict physical requirements in previous examinations, Brother Gabriel confidently replied: Our hopes are high. Forming the strong backbone of this organization are such seniors of the January class as Abrahams, Annunziata, Colligan, Connolly, Cuddahy, DeSimone, DiBuono, Gehm, Hoeffner, Hyland, Keyes, Kramer, Lang, Schlosser, Thumser and Ward, of the June graduating class-Borkowski, Boyle, Campell, Cornyn, Driscoll, Gaffney, Gaither, Macy, Mergens, Mosso, Ramoino, Riordan, Rohan, Shalhoub, and Schublein. The Jamesonian, which took up where f'The Mentor of old St. James left off, is now in its third decade of publication and is the oldest school paper in existence that has been published continuously. The purpose of the paper is to present to the students a com- plete coverage of school activities and a crys- tallization of school life. It was but recently that the Jamesonian reached its zenith. Besides receiving the Medalist award from the Columbia Press Association and a citation from Catholic War Veterans, it annexed two more honors. One from the Catholic Press Association and the other from the Brooklyn Eagle. Aiding Brother james in preparing a first class monthly was a first class staff. Primarily responsible for the Jamesonians success dur- ing the first part of the year was Editor-in- Chief. Al Guthrie. Led by Managing Editor Bill Keyes. the Editorial Board, consisted of Bob Auld. J. Allen Thumser, jim Cross and Gene Beck, who play a major role in the actual planning and setting up of the paper. Rounding out the staff was jack Becht. Ready to carry on the fine work was William Knoetgen as Editor-in-Chief and Tom Donavan as Man- aging Editor, while posts of Feature Editor and Copy Editor were filled by Bob Amend and R. Gordon respectively. Edward Babb took over the Exchange Column while Ed Butler carried on in the capacity of chief artist without talented Hank Nietzchmann. The sports department was in a class by itself, with its own editors and writing staff. john Starkey and Frank McCann were co- editors and at the same time co-authors of the Loudspeaker. Aiding them in the work of banging out the sports pages was Jack Walsh. Also valuable in the production of the jamesonian was the typing class under the direction of Brother Alfred Peter. It was these students who tackled the job of typing out the full six pages before the copies were sent to press. And there you have the jamesonian, a hard working group that has developed a feeling of unity which has grown from the close har- mony in which they labor. All the success that was accomplished was not all done in a day. It took twenty years of experience to de- velop it to perfection. gs: A D b 2' .5 13, Q Y V 1 fn, .4 fb -.Q E, ,f 12? We Uh! 746 ' Perhaps with less fanfare than track and less glamor than basketball but with as much skill and ability required, is the little publicized forensic art of debating. Every year debaters are competing at the rostrum with other schools, in the hope of attaining greater glory for Loughlin. Throughout the season, these qualified individuals continue to strive for greater efficiency and ability in this particular field and are indeed worthy of the praise here given to them. Upholding the heritage which Loughlin students have established in all fields of endeavor, the Debating Society consistently engages in successful seasons. A long season of debates is climaxed by the annual Azarias Forensic League tournament sponsored by the Brothers of the Christian Schools. Last year Thomas Mann, joseph Edden Henry Miller, George Boyle, John Rohan Francis Waters, Louis Kennedy, james Catterso Frank Beston, William Foley, james Arachting 122 Loughlin won nine out of twelve debates with the team of George Boyle and james Catter- erm rnrniving hrnrwn rnnriale fnr their nrhinvn- ments. This year while not placing any team in the semi-finals Loughlin again proved itself to be a tough opponent by winning a large percentage of its debates. The national debate topic for the year was, Resolved: That the Federal Government should require arbitration of Labor disputes in all basic American industriesf' In order for a debater to intelligently discuss a topic of such depth it is necessary for him to have a large knowledge of the subject in general, and to be familiar with all the various pros and cons. In order to secure this knowledge it was necessary for the members of the team to de- vote long hours of hard work and study at home, in school, and in public and private libraries. The necessity of this laborious un- dertaking is born out by the fact that a good debater must live, eat and drink his topic be- fore he is able to argue. After the basic knowl- edge was comprehended, fundamental speech- es were prepared and the various teams en- gaged in inter-squad debates. Under the guid- ing hand and expert tutelage of Brother Ad- jutor Patrick the teams were prepared for outside competition. Throughout the year the team was engaged with the outstanding schools of the city including De La Salle, St. Augustine, Cardinal hayes and La Salle. Dur- ing these meetings each debater strove for 10070 efficiency in knowledge of subject and organifefi presentation and refutatiera. Cor:- stant practice together with the constructive criticism of Brother Patrick cultivated the members of the team into polished orators. The team consists of George Boyle, President, James Catterson, Vice-Presidentg Frank Bes- ton, Secretary, Henry Miller, Frank Waters, joseph Edden, Carmine LoBosco, Thomas Guiler, james Arachtingi and Alexander Lett. Devoting their talents to other fields George Boyle and james Catterson took part in the annual Youth Forum conducted by the Daily Mirrcr. They were selected from a group of over 120 youths representing the city's lead- ing youth organizations. Boyle was selected as chairman and received a gold watch for his efforts while Catterson was chosen as alternate chairman and was rewarded with a pen and pencil set. The ultimate aim of the Debating Society is to train the men of Loughlin in the varied skills of debate and discussion in order that in future life they might have the ability to ex- press their own personal viewpoint clearly and intelligently. The ability to say what you mean effectively is of great value at all times, especially today in a world where the foes of Catholicism are not adverse to expressing their feelings against our beliefs. l joseph Edden George Boyle VARSITY Frank Beston James cmerson Brother Patrick and boys work on an electron. Behind the closed doors of the Physics Lab every Monday and Friday afternoon, you will find a group of boys who are huddled around a man identified by the habit of the Brothers of the Christian Schools, listening intently to his lecture. This is the Radio Club. The pri- mary purpose of this organization is best sum- marized in its popular pseudonym SPARKS -Society to Promote the Advancement of 'D-,-IS- 'hV..-...1-.-l.-.,- -..A 01-111 Axuunv Lxnnvvvnvusve uuu unux. Under the versatile moderation and guid- ance of Brother C. Patrick, these budding young physicists are instructed in radio tech- nology. Then, having assimilated the ideas he has imparted, they put these facts into practice by tinkering with the old radio parts that have been reclaimed from scrap piles, cellars, and attics all over Brooklyn, Queens and Long Island. Needless to say, the Radio Club has the active support of the Physics Department in securing material, and, at pres- ent, special attention is given to the newly ac- quired war surplus material. A typical Sparks session commences with a period of instruction from the experiment manual. However, theory is not the sole ob- jective, for by utilizing the inforrnation ac- quired from the experiment for the day, a radio unit is assembled from the experimental blocks which the boys themselves have con- structed. On each block is an essential radio part. By wiring the blocks together in various fashions, an entire radio unit may be assem- bled. In this manner the apparently complex wiring of the radio mechanism is simplified, considerably, and can be studied with ease by the boys. 'T 5 1 Brother Albert and Mr. Rogers explain operations of a gill to club members. One of the quieter clubs, which remains long after school hours in the pursuit of re- search, is the Biology Club. Meetings are high- lighted by an informal atmosphere within which the club members are able to cooperate more successfully than otherwise. There ex- ists no hierarchy of members, each member works in a group under a certain project, some of which are: THE REPTILE DEPARTMENT-Fabri and Coheleach, both working on the habits of reptiles. THE TROPICAL FISH DEPARTMENT- Mills and Endrews, both studying breed- ing habits of fish. THE DISSECTION DEPARTMENT - fLoughlin's future surgeonsj Maddocks, A. DeCostanza and Hyland. THE PLANT LIFE DEPARTMENT - Peclaukas and A. DeCostanza, devoted to the study of hydroponics and grafting. THE MICROTONE DEPARTMENT - A. Annunziata and Bob Miller, constructing a microtone and making slides. These are just a few of the departments Za active in the study of Biology. Most of the boys are in more than one group, thus insuring a firm bond and union among all members. The members of the Biology Club come from more than one year. The most represen- tative year groups are the freshman and sen- ior years. From the senior year, there are J. DeCostanza, A. Annunziata, Hyland, and Doc Gorman. The informal atmosphere pre- vents the student councillors on this club from stamping down on the freshmen. It has been found that most members of the Biology Club wish to pursue some branch of the sciences, such as medicine, surgery, den- tistry, or farming. This interest urges them to join one of the other clubs, such as the Radio and Chemistry Clubs, each of which has among its membership ex-Biology Club mem- bers. Most of the credit for the fine work done lies in the hands of Mr. Rogers and Brother Albert, both of whom have, for the past four years, remained with the boys late after school hours, urging them on. Their patience and understanding have been well reflected in the fine work done by the members. To them, the members attribute all credit for the success of their club. Under the moderation of Mr. Frank Fabinski, the cultural side of the French so- ciety is brought into view. The primary pur- pose of this organization, is to familiarize its members wiih the life and cusiuuis uf Lin: French people, as well as to acquaint them with a speaking and understanding knowledge of the French language. When all the members have checked in, the session of the French Club commences. First, you are handed a mimeographed vocabulary sheet on the subject for discussion. Then, after you have mastered your parlez-vous- merci beaucoups and Ucherchez les femmes, the conversation in French begins. By prac- tice alone, it has been proved, can the mas- tery of a foreign language be acquired, here is the place to practice that bon jour, mon- sieur that you have been saving for a suitable occasion. Once a month, one of our most eloquent professeurs of the French Department ad- dresses these Etudians de francais. His lec- ture in French helps tune their ears to the understanding of French pronunciation, and develops in the boys a certain keeness and speed in discerning the meanings of French words. Linguaphone records are instrumental in the further development of this technique which is of prime importance in the study of la belle langue. . Ulllllllll The Camera Club, under the moderatorship of Brother C. Richard, has a limited member- ship of twenty-five. From these twenty-five were chosen co-Presidents Gene Kusielewicz and Edward Sherry, while Thomas Potenza and Robert Gormerly were elected Secretary and Treasurer, respectively. Around this nu- cleus Brother Richard has built up a well or- ganized group. Meetings are held once a week, and are run by parliamentary procedure. The organization has made excursions to various points, such as, The Cloisters, Pali- sades and the Bronx Zoo, to acquire pictures for exhibits. The exhibits, which have been held in the library, have produced many fine enlargements. This fact is a criterion for the carrying on of the Club's work, and a proof of its achieved success. The Club is divided into three groups, the first consisting of members with only a faint understanding of photography, the second group with members who know how to de- velop negatives and print pictures, and the third, or advanced group, for those members who know how to enlarge. The dark room, which is in use many afternoons, is well equipped for developing, printing and enlarg- ing. The main activities of the Club consist in supplying pictures for the Jamesonian and Loughlinite, furthering the interests of those wishing to advance in photography, and for conducting classes of instruction for its mem- bers. To all '48 graduates, their most vivid recollections of Loughlin will be those of the Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter activities, as presented by Brother James and his able assistants. This last year has been packed with especially successful activities as the Mite-box drive and the First Friday speeches. During the year Loughlin was honored with the presence of such speakers as the Rev. Father Clancey, an alumnus, who spoke on The True Value of Thanksgiving, Mr. James Philips, Brother A. Thomas and others. These, and other such vigorous talks, have served as inspirations to Loughlin's '48 senior classes. One of the newer projects of the Arch-Confraternityn has been the practice of serving warm breakfast for the First-Friday communicants-the last group served numbered over five hundred. Because of the success of this project, Brother james also inaugurated a senior communion-breakfast. The idea behind these breakfasts is to encourage the frequent reception of the Eucharist by Loughlinites. Together with this project, the canned food drive, the sale of religious cards, and the Catholic book drive have also served to further the ideals of the Arch- Confraternity. They have reached their goals and won the laurels and plaudits of our school. Their ideals are to further Christian education, to awaken an interest in the reception of the Sacraments, and thereby teach youth to know, love and serve Jesus, and to foster vocations to the Priesthood and Brothers. Their suc- cess in the past insures the success of their future endeavors.
