Girls Bring Home First Title The girls, varsity tennis squad with only two seniors, one junior, and three freshmen brought home the first state title in Kelleyis history. The Comets were coached by Ms. Weems who has coached the team for four years. Senior Natalie Illig grabbed a title in number one singles as she finished the season with a record of 19-2. Freshman Ginger Lewis finished with a record of 24--1 and won the state title in number two singles. Kelley's doubles teams also fared well with senior Sara Den- nehy and freshman Michelle Gwyn finishing second to Ard- moreis two-time defending state champions. Sara and Michelle closed with a record of 23-2. The number two doubles team, junior Carey Cobb and freshman Patricia Illig, placed fourth and had a record of 13-9. Both qualified for the state tournament in each of their four years at Kelley and have taken numerous championships at the Bartlesville, Metro Lakes Conference, Metro and Regional tournaments. Natalie won state as a freshman, placed second as a sophomore, and took third as a junior. Sara did not place in her first two trips to the state tournament but won second in number two singles her junior year. Natalie commented, The individual championship was important but the team title really topped off the year. Sara added, Winning state was a great way to cap off four years of tennis at Kelley. 1 Sara Dennehy pirouettes to victory. 2 Natalie Illig follows through on the aforementioned backhand. 3 Michelle Gwyn lunges for a baclthand. 4 The state champs revel in their glory with coach of the year, Sharon Weems. 5 State champion Ginger Lewis warms up before a match. 171
