Grapplers Grab Second traight tater The Comet wrestlers proved last year's state title was no fluke. Dominating their opponents, the wrestlers went straight to the top. The team started the season by winning four of their first five dual meets. Under the expertise of coach ,lim Sheilds, the team defeated op- ponents Claremore, Miami, Owasso, and Vinita. Their first of only two losses came in their fifth dual when they wrestled McAlester. However, the Comets blew out opponents such as Tahlequah, Muskogee. Okmulgee, and Webster as they went full speed into Regionals. Duals were not the team's only strong point. With each tournament, the team's placings improved. The first tournament was in Jenks and the Comets placed fourth. After romping Muskogee in a dual the team headed for the Edison tournament. At this time the team had dropped to second in the state rankings. With that on their minds, the grapplers moved up a notch. placed third, and recaptured their number one ranking. A week later the wrestlers found themselves in Put- nam City facing their toughest opposition of the year. Nevertheless, the Comets placed an outstanding third and left Putnam City with three weeks to prepare for Regionals. As Regionals grew closer, the Comets gained confidence, despite the youth of the team. The tourna- ment was hosted by Kelley and with the help of the home fans, the wrestlers slaughtered their opponents in the finals. The Comets won Regionals with the toughest and most rewarding tournament just one week away. Everything the team had worked for was right in front of them and with courage and determination, eight of thirteen varsity wrestlers headed to Stillwater to de- fend their State title. 1.
