Girls' Pick p Fourth Place After battling the distinctive Oklahoma weather of rain one day and blistering heat the next and weeks of hard work and practice, the girls' Cross Country team was ready for the season. The team got off to a great start. Coached by Terry Hipscher and led by Theresa Jones, Lynne Smith, and Natalie Illig, the team made impressive showings in each of their meets. With a first place victory in Norman under their belts the girls were keyed up for State. Preparing for State took time and hard work: the girls were ready for both. After an exceptional 4th place finish at the State Meet Bridget Ishmael exclaimed, Though we didn't take State this year, we'll win it next year, five of our seven varsity run- ners are returning. Some of the girls, times were: Theresa Jones 14:01 f13thj, Natalie Illig 14:20 f19j, Teresa Bierig 14:52 f31j, Jenny Nasser 15:14 1451, and Bridget Ishmael 16:07 1551. 1. Hard Work, Endurance Pays Off For Boys, CC The 1984-85 Boyis Cross Country tcam, led by Roger Littlefield with his best year ever, made its usual showing among the State's elite. With 2nd place finishes at Norman. Conference. Edison. and Hale, they went on to post a 4th place finish at state. When one ponders the motivation behind the Kelley Harriers, he must take into account the grueling training which begins the previous summer. Thus. the key to the successful tradition of Cross Country is the runners' conditioning to pain. A Bishop Kelley cross country runner who has gone through a season of training under Coach Heckenkemper can fear nothing. 1 Owen Bushaw's courage carries him across the finish line at O.R.U. 2 Roger Littlefield blows by two adversaries en route to his 2nd place State finish. Comets Gain Share of Third Title Although the Comet basketball team finished the season at 12-11, they cap- tured a share of their third straight conference title. Kelley finished at 5-2 in the conference and tied four other teams for the top spot. Kelley opened the season with a 51-46 victory over Cascia Hall. Later in the year, Kelley again defeated Cascia to earn the first regular season sweep over the Commandoes in years. The highlight of the season was the conference schedule. After opening the conference schedule with a disappointing loss to Webster, the Comets came back to win three straight to get back in the conference race. The victories were a two point victory over Owasso and blow outs over Miami and Claremore. Kelley then traveled to Bixby, but fell a point short of the Spartans. Kelley regrouped and worked their way into a tie with victories over Pryor and Tahlequah. Kelley was placed in what many considered Class 4-A,s toughest regional. Play- ing in the Bixby gym, the Comets started the playoffs aginst McLain. Kelley fell behind early, and their comeback fell short, 65-57. l. Steve Axley shoots for two. 2.
