The team lost a few close ones but never gave up. Although this was their first year together, they played well, showing a lot of potential. With the ex- perience they will gain in the future, they should mold into another out- standing Kelley team. 1 Quarterback ,lim Walton runs the option to perfection. 2 Runningback Denny Velila takes the handoff and cuts off joey Coveyis block for a long gain. 153

J.V. ports 7-0-1 Record The 1984 J.V. football team finished the season undefeated. However, a season ending tie to Bixby was the only blemish on their 7-0-1 season. Led by Coaches Weeldryer and Begnel, the Comets were able to salvage a tie against Bixby with a late come- back. Although few people saw them play during the season, the future for Kelley football looks promising as this team takes over the Varsity level next year. 1 Scott White breaks free on an 80-yard touchdown reception against Pryor. 2 The J.V. defense plays havoc with Rogers runningback. 3 Quarterback Philip Boone shows the classic dropback style. 4- Runningback Richard Williams looks inside for extra yardage in the Comets' victory over Pryor. .291 '4 1? Comets Slow tart, Explode Into State Finals 1984 was an outstanding year for the Comets. After a mediocre start, the Comets rode a five game winning streak into the State Finals. The Comets qualified for the playoffs with season ending victories over Bixby and Owasso. The two victories gave the Comets their second straight District title. The Comets opened the playoffs with a 19-14 victory over Pryor, avenging an earlier loss to the Tigers. The quarterfinal victory over Mustang vaulted the Comets into the semi-finals for only the second time in school history. Kelley's miraculous comeback against Miami, a 28-21 overtime victory, placed the Comets in the finals against undefeated Duncan. The Comets played Dun- can down to the wire, before a last second field goal spelled the Comets defeat. At right, Mike Spencer puts on his game face.
