7955 omething For Everyone. Came Referee Everyone has a trivia game! The babyboomers, sports fans, movie lovers, Bible thumpers, and rock 'n rollers all have an edi- tion designed for them, so why not a Kelley's Pursuit? All common fand uncommonj questions about the Comets are answered in this Genius Edition. The 1984-1985 school year has been immortalized in this volume, so play the game and learn about our Historical groups, Sports, Players, and Leisure activities. Relive those special memories. Who can forget the first day of school for the lastj, the dances, matches and meets, exams, and hundreds of other events, friends, and feelings. Kelley is anything but trivial, so next time, instead of getting out that scruffy old gameboard and plastic pieces, pull out Kelley's Pursuit off the shelf and start the opening moves! One of the more memorable events in the Comets' sports year was the trip to state by the football team. Although the game was a disappointing loss, Comet football united the Kelley community. The Cross Country teams narrowly missed capturing state with both boys' and girls' teams placing fourth. Although Kelley is an educa- tional institution, each sport represents an important facet of Kelley life. 3 , . . . 5MllIllllt'l N smile after L'0l'IXf'I Ill1g another per- - Dedication: Sherr Vilela and Angelo Prassa Recognized Dedication for a Dedicated Man As the disciplinarian, Coach Prassa may not seem to be the most liked person at Bishop Kelley, but the 1985 seniors showed they recognize quality. Mr. Prassa is the first faculty male dedicatee. He was chosen by a senior vote recognizing contribu- tions to the Kelley community. As disciplinarian, coach, teacher, and unofficial groundskeeper, Mr. Prassa demonstrates his dedication. Still' 4 remembered as Coach of the Year in 1981, Mr. Prassa continues to spend time in the locker room by helping with football. Faculty members qualified for the ballot by working at Kelley for a minimum of five years. This qualification Mrs. Vilela met easily as anyone who has listened to her exciting stories of Kelley's past can verify. Mrs. Vilelais contributions are varied. They have included senior class sponsor, journalism sponsor, and diehard Kelley sports attendant. The one at- tribute which stands out in any conversation about Mrs. Vielela is her teaching ability. Ol 26 4' ational Merit Filling in the dots has been a prestigious pasttime for several Kelleyites this year. Achieving this lofty status from Bishop Kelley fa National Merit hotbedj are eight com- mended students, one semi-finalist, and six finalists. Attaining National Merit status is quite lucrativeg students can extract as much as 32000 from the National Merit racket. Under the guidance of Mrs. Oliver and Miss Beck the finalist filled out their applica- tions, sent them in, and received their cash prizes in return. The unfortunate commend- ed students and semi-finalists did not even receive a year's supply of Turtle Wax. However, next year,s contestants can look forward to possibly the biggest prize over a dinner with Mr. Oberste at Kip's Big Boy. I . Besides the Homecoming Dances, Pep Club sponsored several victory dances. Student Council sponsored victory dances after football and basketball games, along with the New Year's, Saide Hawkins, and Howdy dances. The generous folks at Stuco also held a canned food dance, raising food and money for the starving in Ethiopia. Feeling a little bit 'groovy,' AFS put on a sixties dance in February, with the help of a Kelley band. Sometimes planning months ahead to go with their steadies or the week before frantically grabbing left-overs with XY chromosomes, the women looked splendid in their lovely evening gowns. The men, some attired in Ed Besharais finest, treated their dates to an evening of fun and frolic. The Ushers provided danceable tunes, new hits as well as old favorites. The junior class did a fine job of planning and sponsoring this memorable event, culminating an exciting year for the seniors. swf! N :IMHQ ji fe 7S::9:f,. Seniors received this honor for their leadership abilities and service to Kelley dur- ing their four year residency. Although the Boy and Girl of the Month title is not transferable to most transcripts, the honor is great. Recipients of the award include club presidents, bus drivers, team captains, and regular students. For the twenty-fifth gradating class three seniors, Kristen Kelly, Dan Houston, and ,lim Griffin presented their view of the importance of Kellefs education. A member of the first graduating class, Mr. William Lissau, also spoke. In their scarlet robes the seniors were one of the brightest points of the evening. The conferring of the diplomas was performed by the Most Reverend Eusebius Beltran, and our own Brother Lawerence. The Class of 1985 has now joined the ranks of untrivial Kelley graduates. Where did juniors go on the weekends and wecknights? On Wednesday nights, some juniors went to Captainis Cabin to listen to the Unknown, a Kelley band. Others stayed home with mounds of homework to do. When Fridays rolled around, most juniors went to Zink Park or to the River Parks to see what everyone else was doing. However, many loyally went to school-sponsored functions such as dances and footballfbasketball games. As upperclassmen the juniors were able to par- ticipate in some Kelley organizations and clubs such as the Key Club, Anchor Club, and blood drives. Not only did juniors give blood, they gave time and energy as well. During the Fall Homecoming activities, they won the hall decorating and the most spirited class contests. Moe, Curly, and Pelizzoni?? A Year- for Growing .yymfww Although being a sophomore means returning with more seniority, sophomore year is spent grow- ing up and meeting more classmates. This year the Sophomore class is full of Comet spirit. Since the second year has more free time, Sophomores begin to exert their influence in the school by participating in pom pon, cheerleading and varsity sports. Sophomore year is also spent discovering new social activities. Sophomores spend more time at dances and at aftergame parties. They also get the keys to the car for the first time fthey might even get their own carl. The class of '87 also demonstrates its academic ability. Kristen Stamile placed at the Pittsburg Math Contest, along with numerous others. The class also saw the first in a long line of upcoming battery of standardized tests. But looking at the way they handled the new adaptation this year, the class of ,87 should be able to handle the problems with confidence. V' - A , ov.. , .A 3. No longer would these neonates subsist on the inconsequential entertainment of pinball and rollerskating. These bright-eyed freshmen would soon trek to the Annex Mall for the latest gossip on other available freshmen, and then to Swenson's for a relaxing, leisurely snack. Orientation brought all of the freshmen together. Each discovered whom he would like to befriend and whom she would like to date. A new high school atmosphere allowed the freshmen to partake in many clubs, such as Pep Club and AFS. Their participation in sports and their attendance at pep rallies gave the Kelley community an important ingre- dient to Kelley's spirited school. The freshmen are now permitted to roll again and advance to the next level, sophomore year. li . 1 - 4 ,,, N., David Adams Todd Adams Shannon Allen Walter Alley Tony Alonso Frederick Ames Laird Armstrong Carey Arns Teresa Ashmore Michael Back Paul Bacon Jennifer Berner Dana Best Teresa Bierig Glen Blake Scott Blosser Sarah Bohannon Jason Bolton Kristin Boyle M' Betsy Brock Matt Brougher Rodney Brown X X Damon Burnett Dana Burton Sean Bushaw Paul Cagnolatti Anthony Cescon vii wr X x Vincent Cianfrone Kay Cobb John Coffman Catherine Collier Mary Condon Michael Cosmann -gs l . What do they do for the school? This year, Student Council has become a very important organization on campus. A dedicated group of officers joined Mr. Oberste this year, having been trained at Basic Leadership Workshop last summer. They involved class representatives in many activites: Howdy Week, Victory Dances, Camfel Productions, Kelley Sweatshirts, Sadie Hawkins, Boy and Girl of the Month, Hug a Football player, and the Kelley Olym- pics. Members provide the school with leadership through service-volunteering for just about any job that needs to be done. Whenever and wherever there is work to be done, one will undoubtledly find a Student Council member. Many Kelleyites were enticed by offers of free cookies and juice, but only a few brave bodies actually donated blood. So far, every student that entered the wrestling room has been reported to come back out. However, emerging Kelleyites seem to have a particularly rosy outlook for the rest of the day. The value of the Red Cross cannot be measured in pints alone. The Red Cross also provides Christmas stockings for the poor children of Tulsa and donates money to needy families through bake sales. The proud sponsors of these zealots are Ms. Karey and Mrs. Dempsey. Red Cross members are led by Tim Harbison, President, Faye Le Blanc, Vice-President, Mary Rac- zkowski, Secretary, ,lane Bradshaw, Treasurer, Amy Hirsch, Project Coordinator. 1. Patrick Morgan, Tom Medlock, and ,lim Griffin were on the Media Committee. They wrote many informative radio spots, and appeared on radio shows to tell of the Ethiopian crisis. Injuries Riddle oftball Team s Inexperience and injury took its toll on the 1984- Comette soft- ball team as they finished their season with an 8-13 record. Despite the losing record, there were several highlights throughout the season. The team placed third is both the Norman and Conference tour- naments. ,luniors first baseman Sheila 0'Brien, third baseman Sarah Rhoads, and senior second baseman Jill Rottschaefer were selected to the first ever All-Conference team for their outstanding play in the tournament. Rottschaefer was eventually named to the All- District team and chosen to play in the All-State game, also a first time event. Behind strong hitting and the pitching of senior Melissa Bond, the girls got off to a 4-1 start. However, injuries hit the Comettes and they ended the season with four players out of position. Senior catcher Gina Dean broke her finger, knocking her out for several weeks, while senior shortstop Mary Raczkowski played only two games before becoming ill and missing the rest of the season. Other starters were juniors Erin Stoever, who moved from first base to shortstop in Raczkowskfs absence, Lori Warning, who played both outfield and catcher, and the only sophomore starter, centerfielder Melissa Hughes. Juniors Dianne Haight, Catherine Craig, Michelle LaFortune, and freshmen Kati Tomasi, Laura Scattergood and Rosemary Stallbaumer provided utility play. Comets Slow tart, Explode Into State Finals 1984 was an outstanding year for the Comets. After a mediocre start, the Comets rode a five game winning streak into the State Finals. The Comets qualified for the playoffs with season ending victories over Bixby and Owasso. The two victories gave the Comets their second straight District title. The Comets opened the playoffs with a 19-14 victory over Pryor, avenging an earlier loss to the Tigers. The quarterfinal victory over Mustang vaulted the Comets into the semi-finals for only the second time in school history. Kelley's miraculous comeback against Miami, a 28-21 overtime victory, placed the Comets in the finals against undefeated Duncan. The Comets played Dun- can down to the wire, before a last second field goal spelled the Comets defeat. At right, Mike Spencer puts on his game face. Although they receive little recognition, the cheerleaders give to the school throughout the year. After being chosen to the squad in the spring, they practice every morning during the summer at 7:00. The Comet cheerleaders were named camp champions at the 1984 University Cheerleading Association summer session at Oklahome State University. They also received the first place trophy for a cheer, the second place trophy for sideline chant, and the spirit stick award- ed to the squads showing the most spirit throughout the camp. ,. Kelley finished at 5-2 in the conference and tied four other teams for the top spot. Kelley opened the season with a 51-46 victory over Cascia Hall. Later in the year, Kelley again defeated Cascia to earn the first regular season sweep over the Commandoes in years. The highlight of the season was the conference schedule. After opening the conference schedule with a disappointing loss to Webster, the Comets came back to win three straight to get back in the conference race. The victories were a two point victory over Owasso and blow outs over Miami and Claremore. Kelley then traveled to Bixby, but fell a point short of the Spartans. Kelley regrouped and worked their way into a tie with victories over Pryor and Tahlequah. Kelley was placed in what many considered Class 4-A,s toughest regional. The team started the season by winning four of their first five dual meets. Under the expertise of coach ,lim Sheilds, the team defeated op- ponents Claremore, Miami, Owasso, and Vinita. Their first of only two losses came in their fifth dual when they wrestled McAlester. However, the Comets blew out opponents such as Tahlequah, Muskogee. Okmulgee, and Webster as they went full speed into Regionals. Duals were not the team's only strong point. With each tournament, the team's placings improved. The first tournament was in Jenks and the Comets placed fourth. After romping Muskogee in a dual the team headed for the Edison tournament. At this time the team had dropped to second in the state rankings. With that on their minds, the grapplers moved up a notch. placed third, and recaptured their number one ranking. A week later the wrestlers found themselves in Put- nam City facing their toughest opposition of the year. Nevertheless, the Comets placed an outstanding third and left Putnam City with three weeks to prepare for Regionals. As Regionals grew closer, the Comets gained confidence, despite the youth of the team. The tourna- ment was hosted by Kelley and with the help of the home fans, the wrestlers slaughtered their opponents in the finals. The Comets won Regionals with the toughest and most rewarding tournament just one week away. Everything the team had worked for was right in front of them and with courage and determination, eight of thirteen varsity wrestlers headed to Stillwater to de- fend their State title. 1. The Comets were coached by Ms. Weems who has coached the team for four years. Senior Natalie Illig grabbed a title in number one singles as she finished the season with a record of 19-2. Freshman Ginger Lewis finished with a record of 24--1 and won the state title in number two singles. Kelley's doubles teams also fared well with senior Sara Den- nehy and freshman Michelle Gwyn finishing second to Ard- moreis two-time defending state champions. Sara and Michelle closed with a record of 23-2. The number two doubles team, junior Carey Cobb and freshman Patricia Illig, placed fourth and had a record of 13-9. The record was misleading because eleven of Kelley's losses came by one run. The season did have some highlights. The first victory of the year was Coach Jim Woolridge's 100th career victory at Kelley. The victory was an 11-7 decision over Class SA Hale. The 1985 Comets consisted of mainly Seniors. Shannon Reed and Greg Glover led the team in hit- ting with averages of .440 and .4-09, respectively. Reed and Clover both three year starters made First Team All-City. Reed made the team as an out- fielder, while Glover was the First Baseman. Jeff Santee, another three year starter, and Rob .lezek were the Comets ace pitchers. Santee proved to be a hard-luck pitcher finishing with a record of 2-4, which included a one-hitter against Webster. Santee suffered the loss as the Comets were beaten 1-0. Included in the Comets tough schedule was a total of seven games against the Class 4-A and SA state champions, Webster and Bartlesville. The Comets took two out of the three games with Bartlesville.
