The Badger 1 969 Published by the students of Bishop High School Bishop Texas The 1969 BADGER is dedicated to modern timesg the time when the old is replenished by the new, and the time when revolution brings about radical reforms. Because we are a part of these times, we are changing. Our own small worlds are being twisted by society and culture so as to be barely acknow- ledgeable. Fifty years ago the first annual of Bishop High School was published. The LA VELA QTHE CANDLEQ indicated that Bishop High School boasted six seniorsg this year 118 students are classi- fied as seniors. This is progress. As progress intensifies, memories are left behind. This is the purpose of the 1969 BADGER-to record the progress of modern times and provide memories of a year. in 2 4 1 7 my .1 an 5 ver H w'f'v'1'rrf,. up H . f-',,-3.5 lqmzg Zlfsshlf.1r,2ili2?i5'5 f555gfil?f55?f?3:f1.f' A e ' fgffu-'-.rgyrvrrkr ' . , 25.5-51,1 ii k igiwrfsrrrfrzfifizih!ff?e!,g52sirf.ef5.fQsg :twigfr:21.2fi2ze2sV3?lgsi'?Er2i21rQr.:5gia,,fas 1 1 , r.jf ' 1 1, ,g,7'-573'-Ku 'Tgifwfi gsfai??,. , H ww mg i, 4,1 ,. iiVi35fig!,liS',f fj if sifLif'f5g1f..g WELL,-S-E11flIf1flifi!rrgwiliiifiillgiiiw-Wi'riS. e sifsggrf-g52F.5'.fe,f if 1-ff Bishop High Table of Contents Campus Life . . . Home of the Badgers As a student enters the doors of BHS, he enters a world of new experiences and takes another step toward a promising future. These experiences will include a new realm of knowledge, a new realm of friendships, and a new realm of accomplished goals. 1 n.. N 1 2 s i 3 6 4 Why do students journey through these realms? Maybe they journey out of pure curiousity. But the more probable answer to this question would be the desire to learn and expand the individual interest. The most obvious opportunity to learn at Bishop High School is when students are in class. They learn by listening to their teachers, through simple experimentation, and through amazing discoveries. Mark Whitaker is one student who learned through discovery. He dis- covered a comet, and he won world recognition through his discovery. Administrators are a guiding light to knowledge. They devote much of their time to teaching and helping students not only in acade- mic problems, but in personal pro- blems, too. I . . . Opportunities All the time at BHS is not devoted to only study. Much of it goes to the development of the students character. This character is developed through contacts with others, through influence, and through pure enjoyment of one's surrounding environment. This enjoyment is felt through sports, assemblies, leisure time, and class planned project, such as the junior sponsored Powder Puff football game. for Experimentation . . . Coach's pre-game strategy set the foundation for the enjoyment of a football game. Students talk during their leisure time and enjoy each other's company. The char- acter begins to flower and develop, and one of the many goals set at BHS is in the process of becoming a reality. Every individual at BHS needs some type of help from their in- structors and from themselves. Many more seek knowledge in their fellow classmates. One way the students at Bishop share experiences is by working together. Girls in homemaking classes prepare a dinner for the faculty, and they work together, as does the band and school clubs. The joy of youth is expressed through group participation. Many students enjoy a pep rally held at night. A feeling of excitement is felt, and this excitement seems to be one of the many strings that unites the students of BHS. and Individual Growth ADMINISTRATION AND FACULTY A guiding light will lead a person through the darkness to his destina- tion. The BHS faculty and adminis- tration are the guiding lights that lead and direct students to know- ledge and to their future destina- tion. An efficient faculty instructs students in the various aspects of school curriculum. They lecture, demonstrate, and test the student to measure accomplished know- ledge. Our administration adequate- ly fulfills all teaching requirements as well as preparing the student for the future. School Administrators and Trustees Mr. W. Z. It is almost impossible to figure up experiments' without mathematics, and mathematics entail some knowledge of sci- ence. Math is a subject used every day in BHS, it is further ex- plored to help in higher educa- tion, and possible future voca- tions. Students were offered var- ious courses ranging from related math and algebra, to geometry and trigonometry. Scientific attitudes are de- veloped through the many sci- ence courses offered at Bishop. The clinking test tubes and smell of various chemicals is rather characteristic of the science courses offered here. Mr. Gorbet , Civics 84 World History The library is an important place for every Bishop High School stu- dent. Much information can be obtained concerning knowledge and enjoyment. Among these, books of past civilizations aid students in the study of history. Through the three courses of- fered by the B.H.S. History Depart- ment, students learn to better un- derstand, not only their own coun- try, but all the countries of the world. World History provides a know- ledge of the growth of the world's people to their present peak of civilization. American History nar- rows the subject to the study ofthe development of the United States of America. Civics prepares the student for life as an active Ameri- can citizen. Mrs. Manning World History X O Electives Electives suppliment the basic required courses, add variety to the student's schedule, and help develop the students' talents. Art and general handicraft are taught by Mr. Lawrence Guess. Mr. Charles Schooley and Mr. Stanely McMillan teach industrial arts. Mr. Schooley also teaches drafting and photography. CLASSES Bishop High School is not mere- ly the buildings in which classes are held but the people which attend these classes. Each person who attends does his part to make the school what it is, no matter how large or small his contribution is. It may seem that the individual is lost in the crowd, but although he may not stand out above the rest, he does influence the opinion others have of the school and the whole attitude of the school. The five who led the '68-'69 senior class, Qstanding from left to rightj were Bill Picquet, vice-presidentg Scott Binnion, presidentg and johnny Berkman, treas- urer. Seated are Bonnie Moerbe, reporterg and Joanna Doedyns, secretary. Senior Class of 1969 The last year in BHS holds many memories for all seniors. Having completed three years of their high school education, the senior class of 1968-'69 embarked on a journey through the 'most glorious year of their public school education. With the arrival of senior rings, the sen- iors quickly assumed their position as leaders of BHS. But it is the people and the extra time and effort taken to be a leader, a friend, or a competitor that keeps school interesting. The students and faculty each have a part in selecting the personalities from members of the student body whom they feel have done the most for their school. The students who have the initiative to enter into the various UIL contests are also rewarded with a sense of achievement if not also an award to show for their hard work. Not only do these sports include the coaches and the members of the team, but the whole student body and faculty become involved in participating in pep rallies and attending games. The spirit that is found throughout the school has a way of uniting the students into one body, a student body which is proud of its athletes and their achievements. Many long hours of hard work have gone into this yearbook, and without the help of many of the faculty and students it would not have been possible. A big thanks goes out ot Mr. Charles Schooley and to Royce Felder for their untiring effort in the photography department. We also want to extend a special thanks to Mrs. Harriet Garrett, without whose help we could never have put out the annual. We would like to extend our deepest appreciation to the Bishop and Kingsville merchants, who sup- plied a large amount of the capital for the production of THE BAD- GER.
