This may be the finest group of young nen l've ever coached. Coach Chuc Serber on this year's Southern Zone Champions the 10-2 Bishop Gorman Gaels. 'he Gaels were out to prove something. A lismal 5-4 season in 1985 led to the team's irst non-playoff year in seven years. The erm use to describe this years team was 'The Pride is Back. Little did anybody inow that this 1986 squad was destined for greatness. The Gaels were underdogs when the eason started. They were expected to thallenge Chaparral for the division title, nut many assumed they would fall short. 'he season started off at the Silver Bowl ggainst Las Vegas High. Quaterback Marty Iordova and Running Backs Bo Free and lert Ezor led the Gaels to a 12-7 victory. Gorman then traveled to Rancho to at- tack the Powewrful Rams. The team put forth a valiant effort, but they couldn't stop the Rancho ground game. Late in the game, Coach Chuck Gerber inserted Sophomore Ken Windham at Quaterback, and moved- Senior Marty Cordova to Wide Receiv- er, the rest as they say, is History. The Gaels went on to record nine consecu- tive wins including a 24-23 overtime victory vs. Chaparral to clinch the Sun- set Division Title. Two overtime thrill- ers in the playoffs, placed Gorman in the State Championship Game against two-time defending State Champions, the Wooster Colts. The Colts had shut out their oppo- nents from the South in the previous two Championship games. Not many people gave the Gaels a cnance. in tact, many Eeople thought that Gorman wou d e shut out. The Gaels showed that with determination, almost ,any- thing can happen. The Gaels held the larger Colts to 3 points in the first half. Gorman took its first lead with 2:35 left in the game at 6-3. The Gaels seemed destined for victory. The Colts had an- other idea. With 0:48 left, the Colts burst their bubble, taking the lead 10-6. Gorman had,one more chance, but a fumble at the 41 yard line, put an end to their dream. ' ' Although the Gaels lost the Cham- gionship, they proved, The Pride is ac . 43x . , . if M, Q is r'- ,, .qu K0 e+'.. yn. 5 H 5 W ' ' '-ii.,-A. .
