if l Russian Trip Last summer five Bishop Gorman students visited the Soviet Union. Kim Wasserbeiger, Meryl Cherry, john Ameriks, lessie McCollough, and Anastasia Warpinski, along with new Gorman student Ramona Schatts, joined students from throughout the United States on this adventure of a lifetime. After a brief visit to Finland, the group boarded a Russian train bound for Leningrad. They were met by Ta- tania, their Russian guide. Tatania and her daughter, Dascha, accompa- nied them throughout Leningrad's imposing, beautiful buildings. From there they journeyed to Pskov, a small medieval city, to Smolensk, a tiny city on the Dneiper River, and finally to Moscow. The group at- tended the Goodwill Games at the invitation of both the Soviet Union and United States. ln addition to ex- tensive sightseeing, the students met many Russian people, had a run-in with the K.G.B. and gained a broad perspective on Soviet life. 164 Studcnt Life

Past the homework and the tests, the students participate in clubs and orga- nizations ranging from Varsity Club to the Racketball Club. Students have the chance to experience trips to Washing- ton, California, and Utah to learn more about the government, colleges, and skiing. The Archive and the Lance bes- tow Gorman's capability in the media, while the arts are presented by the Drama Club. The student life of the community gives strength to Gorman. Like our academics and our sports, the Gorman Student life is the best. Student Life 163

Sponsored by the local Kiwanis Club, Varsity Quiz games are televised on Channel 10, our local PBS station. Gorman's team has been coached by Mr, Robb Leigh for the last five years. The team's record this year was four wins and two losses, and came in third in the county overall. The mainstays of the team this year were Senior and co-captains Eddie Ayoob and joel 'the Prince of Luzon' Gonzalez. Other anchorpersens for the team were Rob Pietranton, Len Tan- chala, and joe Parente. The team looks forward to another successful season next year, and as Coach Leigh puts it You don't have to be an areodite intellectual with endogenous abilities to be proficient, but it does help if you're quick!
