May you build a ladder to the stars. And climb on every rung. May you stay forever young. May you grow up to be righteous May you grow up to be true. May you always know the truth And see the lights surrounding you. May you always be courageous. Stand upright and be strong. May you stay forever young. May your hands always be busy May your feet always be swift. May you have a strong foundation When the winds of changes shift. May your heart always be joyful. May your song always be sung. May you stay forever young. — Bob Dylan 1982 LANCE Volume XX Bishop Fenwick High School Peabody, Massachusetts Senior Mountain Climbing Trip mi WINGS AGAINST THE SGN Forever earthbound are my feet, Upon the rocky road ahead, But high among the clouds, my thoughts. And so my heart is comforted. And if one shoulder aches, I shift The burden to the other side. Remembering the times I’ve laughed. And not the ones in which I’ve cried. Too short indeed these precious years. To let a dream die needlessly. Beyond tomorrow there awaits A time and place designed for me. And old hopes rising one by one. Are golden wings against the sun! — Grace E. Easley 4 To the Faculty and the Administration we would like to express our sincere thanks. Thank-you for your extra time and concern. It does mean, however, that we become Master of our own human weaknesses which try to control us and fog our minds with unclear and unreasonable thinking. We make ourselves slaves to the wills of other people when we refuse to see value in the rules they create for us. At Fenwick, we provided the opportunities for you to become disciplined people. If you view those moments of discipline only as moments of conflict with authority, then we have failed you. If, instead, you are able to measure the lessons of life you have learned through those moments of discipline, then you have learned the secret of becoming Master of your own destiny, rather than a slave to self-indulgence and human indifference. You have been educated. Only one thing more is needed: that you have a tender heart. Without a tender heart, discipline becomes mechanical and stagnant. It becomes life-taking, instead of life-giving. A tender heart knows how to measure the good of each situation, of each moment, of each person. A tender heart is sensitive to the needs of others. It has learned the lesson of forgiveness. It is an understanding heart. A tender heart reaches out of and beyond the self. It sees the point of view of others. It accepts those who are different We are not limited by self-discipline. We are freed by it It gives us more time, more energy, more desire to love more people, and to appreciate better values in life. It helps us get our tender heart. Somewhere out in that world are 174 balloons which you released on the last day of school. They represent your dreams. They belong to the stars now, and so do you. They are free now, and so are you. You have earned that right through self-discipline and because you have a tender heart. Go after your dreams. Aerosmith sings: Half my life’s in books’ written pages. Living and learning from fools and from sages. You know it’s true, all the things you do Come back to you Sing with me, sing for the year. Sing for the laughter, sing for the tear. Sing with me, just for today, never tomorrow. The Good Lord’ll take you away. Dream on, dream on, dream on. Dream until your dream comes true.” Father Dick Messina Graduation address to the class of 1982 112 SENIORS 113 ( }() i( a t za a Hj . ( } ' ti a N Ga t . ( U ' i ft (nj Zu’ ' i ie (. .
