I DEDICATION We, the senior class of 1980, proudly dedicate this vol- ume of the LANCE to Mr. Ralph W. LeDuc, wEose con- tinued work and perseverance have won him the re- spect of the Bishop Fenwick High School community. Mr. LeDuc, one of the school’s original faculty mem- bers, has devoted over 17 years to its development. He arrived in 1962 to coach football and two years later, he joined the faculty. In 1970, he advanced to head foot- ball coach, athletic director and vice-principal. With- out abandoning his role as teacher, Mr. DeLuc assumed the principalship in 1974. The accomplishments of this outstanding man demonstrate his incessant drive. Yet, Mr. LeDuc is more than a list of achievements. He is warm and easily approachable, always available to lis- ten, no matter how trivial the problem. Respected by both faculty and students alike, Mr. LeDuc is a vital asset to our school. F ' or all your efforts on behalf of each of us, Mr. LeDuc, we thank you. A Our journey began in the early 60’s. It was a period of great social unrest. Our nation had lost the youngest president ever elected to an assassin’s bullet. It was a time of promise for youth, and youth was to be heard. The “Establishment” had to answer for its decisions. The Civil Rights movement made great strides in its fight for equality, but at great cost. It was also a time of great technological advancement. Man conquered and explored the last frontier, and in July of 1969 man step- ped on the moon. We were all witness to this through the miracle of television, and this miracle also let us witness first hand our country at war. Viet Nam awakened in us a new reality. Yes we were getting older and we were apprehensive about the future. We were now aware of such things as prejudice, recession, depression and inflation. Probably one of the first deci- sions we really shared in was deciding where we would continue our secondary education. There were several options open, but for us Fenwick was the choice. After much anticipation September of 1976 ar- rived. It was a period of discovering and making new friends — a time to explore personal interests and ca- reer paths. Fenwick expanded our world, shaped our ideals and values, and made us realize our capabilities. As travelers we are saddened that this part of our journey is over. Yes, we can come back, but it will never be the same. As we continue our journey, each of us on a different path, we take with us memories of special moments shared during our four years. How much is a sunset worth? There are such things as a sunset or a beautiful sunrise that have no price. Their value is what they do for you or to you. Each one of us has only so many sunsets and sunrises. Let us learn to enjoy them each day to the fullest. If you took the time to look around craziness was everywhere . . . Seniors are a strange bunch of peo- ple. They don’t know if they’re kids or adults. The fun of Senior year is trying to be both . . . People say we’re going through a phase. I’d rather be in the middle of a phase, than stagnant in a generation not right for me . . . “GOOD MORNING! Today we are on a G mod schedule. There will be a meet- ing of the Gomet staff in Mr. Lynch’s room after school today. Would Rick Lavoie and Mark Smith please see Brother Richard sometime today. There will be a senior class meeting in Room 220 at 2:20 Thursday. All are invited to attend. The girls’ varsity basketball team beat Arlington Gatholic by a score Senior year is when you’ve heard all you care to hear about grade point averages, high SAT’s, and noun clauses . . . Throughout the four years at Fenwick, the student’s attitude toward the faculty does indeed change. Often we come into the school thinking it is teachers versus students. As the years go on it becomes apparent that Fenwick is different. If someone has gone through Bishop Fenwick and has not felt the special relationship be- tween student and teacher, then he has missed one of the best parts of Fenwick. Our faculty has at one time or another gone through experiences similar to ours. So when things are going great, they are there to share in our happiness, and when things go wrong they are there to pick up the pieces, and listen with genuine concern. The day does not end at three o’clock at Bishop Fenwick. As seniors we look . back and realize how much we have been given by the faculty. It is ques- tionable if the yearbook would have made it to press on time if Sr. Susan had not been persistent. We have to say thanks to Fr. Dick, Mr. J, Mr. Farley and Sr. Geraldine, for the peace we feel within because of the Senior Retreat. And too, how many of us would have seen the world from the top of Mount Chocurua, three years in a row, if it had not been for Mr. Farley? The teachers have become very spe- cial people to us because they have taught us so much beyond the class- room. The faculty makes us feel special, unique and lucky to have known them. They are a group of people that we will never forget, because they have im- pressed everlasting memories in our lives. They are true and genuine friends. For this reason, the journey through Freshman, Soph- omore and Junior year is not to be un- derestimated. During these years of growth and development, every indi- vidual establishes a path unique to his lifestyle. It is this path which one will follow not only throughout senior year, but also later in life. Together the un- derclassmen strive for both academic success and social acceptance. This year the Class of 1983 is one of the largest Freshman classes ever. Their en- thusiasm exceeds their number. The Sophomores’ energy was demonstrated when they won “The School Spirit Award.” And the Juniors’ hard work and persistence paid off when they won the Rally Day Decoration Competition. No, the fact cannot be denied. The un- derclassmen contribute to the Fenwick spirit with great fervor and dedication. { T A ( ?3C7 C?? n ( 7 l Vg a 7 ac7 2)C7 a c?ca :7 C7 ac7 : c g oc7 M irvrAW % JUNIORS The junior class came on board in September of 1977. We were one of the largest classes ever to register at Fenwick. Filled with anticipation and anxiety, we wondered where our journey would take us. Eager to begin making our mark, we showed enthusiasm by par- ticipation in various programs and athletic activities. The faculty and upperclassmen helped make our trans- ition a smooth and pleasant one. Now, we find our- selves as juniors. Continually becoming more indepen- dent, we are now faced with bigger challenges. The people at Fenwick have shown us how to face these challenges, and how to prepare for the future, making our journey, thus far, a successful one. At the Thanksgiving Day rally, we displayed this vivacity and as a result, won the Spirit Award. But our class is not only united through ac- tivities, but also through friendships. As Freshmen, we were shy and unaware of the possible opportunities to meet new friends. However, now, as Sophomores, we have learned to open ourselves and form close relation- ships with both the faculty and other students. It has been through these friendships that our spirit has grown. Our enthusiastic cooperation throughout the year has resulted in many successful class events in- cluding the outdoor cookout. Spirit night and Christ- mas carolling. The year has definitely been an experi- ence for every Sophomore. Let’s hope our remaining years at Fenwick are as worthwhile as this year has been. On our first day of school, we gathered in the auditorium to listen to Mr. LeDuc’s welcome: however, we found it difficult to concentrate on what he was saying, because of the unfamiliar surroundings. After the first few weeks of school, however, the building became familiar and strangers became friends. These changes indicated that the freshmen were a part of Bishop Fenwick High School proudly bearing the title Class of 1983. Our participation in school activities began with Spirit Week. Although not winners, we enjoyed work- ing together. Since that time, we have done many things which have united the class. It is our hope that the spirit we are displaying this year will grow, so that when we graduate we will be able to look back and feel satisfied with our accomplishments, both for our school and for ourselves. It is cooperation, support, pride, and friendship. It is trying, struggling, working, and succeeding. All of these aspects of life at Fenwick are clearly shown in the spirit of athletic competi- tion and fair play that is embodied in Fenwick sports. Whether it be on the football field, baseball diamond, volleyball and bas- ketball courts or on a track, our athletic teams show their dedication and pride in Fenwick each time they engage in competition. Just as important as the actual event are the long grueling hours of practice each week. This practice is necessary to the functioning of the team as a well-drilled unit. Each athlete knows the dedication and tremendous concentration it takes to run, skate or shoot baskets, but they also realize that these long tedious hours mold them into physically and emotionally supe- rior persons — persons who are ready for whatever the opposition throws against them. The athlete at Fenwick makes many friends along this difficult road to excellence — friends that he will never forget. There are coaches, teachers, teammates and classmates. There are also cheerleaders, enthusias- tic fans and trainers that share in the ecstasy of their triumphs and the lonli- ness of defeats. Fenwick athletes of old look back not only on events and filled stadiums, but also on the close ties that they have formed. They take comfort in knowing that there was always a friend there, whether the team was undefeated or winless, whether they played at home or far off in Arlington, Brockton or Framingham, and whether the sport was well-known or not. Likewise, our present athletes will experience these diverse memories. Finally, Fenwick athletes give all stu- dents a chance to show their pride in the school. Only at an athletic event can athletes, actors, journalists and other types of students come together for a common cause — to cheer for their school. Friendship, cooperation, dedication, support and pride are just a few things that both athletes and non-athletes gain from Bishop Fenwick sports. The only loss was at the hands of the state finalist, Dorn Savio. The first defense was one of the best on the North Shore, allowing only 34 points for the season, and setting up many scoring opportunities for the offense, who used a host of backs to the best advantage. The highlight of the season was the 34-8 thrashing of St. Mary’s on Thanksgiving Day. Bil- led as a close contest, the Crusaders outplayed and outclassed the under- manned Spartans. This year’s team was made up of a group of classy individuals, who came together to come up with a football team of which F’enwick should be proud. Even though the honors are not received by all, the personal satisfaction received in knowing that you did your best makes it all worthwhile. CROSS COUNTRY TEAMS WINNERS AGAIN Throughout the years, the Bishop Fenwick Cross Country Track Team has been a most impressive group of runners. This year was no exception. The boys accumulated a 7-2 record and avenged their two losses by capturing first place in the Catholic Central League. The girls racked up a 9-0 record, which made their cumulative record in the Catholic Central League one of 29-0. For the second consecutive year, the girls placed third in the All-State, qualifying them as the best team on the North Shore. The impressive records of both the boys’ and girls’ track teams have made Fenwick proud to have these spirited Crusaders repre- sent the school. Likewise, the runners feel privileged to bear the Fenwick name. -V „ BOYS CROSS COUNTRY TRACK TEAM: Back Row, left to right; Mark Lepko, Joe Casey, Terry Joyce, Mike Flaherty, Paul Chartier, Terry Griffin, Kevin Bugler, Mark Richards, Front Row: Paul Murray, John Fen- drich, Dave Pierce, Mike Mclnnis, Jim Dunn, John Juliano, Michael Red” McCormick. Another important factor in the successful season was the support of the fans. This year marked the largest and most spirited crowds, which helped spur the girls on to victory. I IBs I GIRLS’ VARSITY BASKETBALL A TRADITION OF EXCELLENCE The Fenwick girls’ basketball team had another successful sea- son, qualifying for both the Catholic and State tournaments. One of the season’s highlights was going undefeated in the Catholic League. Although much of the team’s success can be attri- buted to the combined efforts of the fourteen squad members, the team was led by five outstanding seniors. As co-captain and a three year starter, Robin Auger’s contribu- tion to the team was as one of the best defensive players. Robin’s season highlight was her spec- tacular 26 point performance against Peabody. Michelle Boutin was the best pure shooter on the team. Her shooting ability allowed Michelle to take her superb outside shot, or drive into the lane. Co-captain, Terry Durkin, was a do-it-all player. Not only was Terry the team’s leading scorer, but her role as point guard al- lowed her to control the team’s offensive balance. The presence of Karen lorio gave the team a hard working and experienced guard. Her flashy passing set up many successful fast breaks. Karen’s defense was her strongest point in the game. Susan McCarthy was very con- sistent throughout the 79-80 sea- son. Sue’s strength on both ends of the court enabled her great scoring and rebounding ability to come forth. Coached by Jim Palin the girls have upheld the winning tradi- tion of the Crusaders. WINTER TRACK TEAM The winter track team once again ended their season with a strong record. Although the team competes in the tough North Shore League, and runs against teams from much larger schools, the runners manage to excel at meets. This season the girls ob- tained a record of 5-3 and the hoys walked away with a record of 6-1-1. Add to this the fact that the girls were Class D champs in the State relays, while the boys placed 5th in the same event. With only a few team members graduating, the teams of the future look strong, and Fenwick promises to be a powerful contender in both girls’ and boys’ track meets. The team achieved its second winning season in a row with new players in starring roles, and supported by a very able team. The spirit and en- thusiasm of the players carried them through the season, espe- cially when they met some of their toughest rivals. One of the key factors in the Crusaders’ success was the inspiration and leadership of co-captains J.B. Braun and Scott Loubris. The man that is the ever-present force behind the Fenwick team. Coach Tierney, and his dedicated staff, again led the team to a most successful season. There is a wide range of activities which Fenwick offers to its students — activities that students can join, not only to have fun working with others, but also to learn various skills. The Lance staff. Student Council, Drama Club, and Comet staff are just a few of the groups whose members make considerable contributions to tbe school. While these organizations offer membership to all grade levels, each class individually plans get-togethers. The freshman trip to a nursing home at Christmas brought happiness to the lonely and aged. The sophomores united their class with the planning of Spirit Night, while the juniors orga- nized a cookout. The seniors made it to the top of a mountain, and also experi- enced the peace of a retreat at Ipswich. RELIGIOUS COMMITTEE: Back Row, left to right; Fr. RALLY! Screams! Drums! Cheers! Horns! These are just a few of the many sounds of a Fenwick rally. Teachers, freshmen, sophomores, juniors and seniors gather en- thusiastically in the auditorium to encourage and support the sports teams. Led hy the cheerleaders, groups compete in the annual spirit competition. V oices become hoarse, but ask anyone and he will say it is well worth it. DRAMA CLUB PREPARES “CARNIVAL” As we go to press the preparation for this year’s production of “Carnival” is w ell underway. Mr. Robert Sousa, no newcomer to theatre productions, promises Fenwick a success of which we can all be proud. OPERATION CHARLEY One of the special things about senior year, is the opportunity to share with our small friends at St. Charles Orphanage. Gathering presents began in September, and by Decem- ber toys and games were wrapped and all was ready for the trip to New Hampshire. Santa arrived on time, and with help from the Fen- wick elves, the children enjoyed a visit from the North Pole. For those who could not ex- perience the joy and love radiating from that Christmas party, we offer these pictures. There are many ac- tivities and sports to become involved in, and each one finds his own niche in the day to day life of the school. Friends are made, homework done, and the fol- lowing pages give a glimpse of some of the ordinary — and not so ordinary — days at Fenwick. “So many people have come and gone. Bid me farewell, my brothers! I bow to you all and take my departure. Here I give back the keys of my door — and I give up all claims to my house. I only ask for last kind words from you. We were neighbors for long, but I received more than I could give. Now the day has dawned and the lamp that lit my dark corner is out. A summons has come and I am ready for my journey.
