BISHOP FENWICK HIGH SCHOOL Peabody, Massachusetts Volume XIV “THE LANCE” 4 The SPIRIT OF ’76 brings to mind a spectrum of images: a growing country struggling for independence. . . as awareness of the joy and the hardships of a new begin- ning. . . a recognition of a future wait- ing to be challenged. . . a striving for unity. . . But the SPIRIT OF ' 76 does not end with colonial America- -it still reflects our lives at Fenwick today: a growing towards independence through our daily experiences. . . an understanding of the peace and frustration of youth. . . an anticipation of what lies ahead. . . a struggle to become one . 3 - 2 STUDENT LIFE Fenwick is.. . a community of sharing; a place where people become unique individuals and learn to live with others; a place where teachers and students develop a close relationship and learn from each other ' s successes and mistakes; the kind of place to experience good and bad feelings; at times hard and frustrating, but worth it all. 6 ■ ' ' A ... As Freshmen when we were called the Class of 1976”, it seemed so far away. Now, as Seniors, when we reflect on our years at Fenwick we see a growth in our spirit. The memories of our Freshman year include all our firsts --rallies, football games, dances and C-Group. Sophomore year seemed to strengthen our friendship and spirit in the class. Our step into the Junior year caused us to have serious thoughts about the future; but at the same time rein- forced our spirit through the Cotillion, election of officers and class rings. Now, as Seniors, we realize that in spite of all we’ve experienced at Fen- wick, there is still much more wait- ing for us. «• K - ri ' V 13 Robert Costello Treasurer SENIOR ADVISORS: TOP TO BOTTOM: Fr. Ronald Woods Our faculty, unlike the teachers of many- other schools, has a special spirit which is associated with Fenwick. Sharing simi- lar values encourages a bond of commu- nication between the teachers and the students. There is a mutual concern that is shown through the participation in and support of student activities. In turn, the students contribute their youth and vi- tality to the development of the family spirit that is Fenwick. - . ' V . ADMINISTRATION A school should be more than just an institution for learning. I like to think of ours as being a com- munity- -the Fenwick Communi- ty- -the union of parents, students and teachers, all of whom are working toward a common goal. One important priority for all of us is to learn the meaning of hard work, sacrifice and commitment. These can be the ingredients which will spell success for us, provided our efforts are contin- ual. If we strive each day to be a little better than the previous day, we will discover happiness for ourselves and will be an influence for good on all those whom our lives may touch. Mr. Ralph LeDuc Principal Sr. Catherine Reidy Vice Principal Your four years at Fenwick have drawn to a close. At times the hours and days have lagged while other moments have raced too quickly past. You leave part of yourself here at Fenwick, while part of Fenwick goes with you. Friendships you have formed during your high school years will be cherished for a lifetime. Values, formed and strengthened, will be reassuring in doubtful times ahead. Look hopefully to your future and work with all your strength to enflesh your Camelot. My prayer for you is borrowed from an ancient Gaelic blessing: May the roads rise to meet you, May the wind be always at your back. May the sun shine warm upon your face, The rain fall softly upon your fields And until we meet again May God hold you In the hollow of His Hand. The Freshmen contribute new ideas and enthusiasm to Fenwick. Their con- fusion gradually disappears as they be- come more involved in school activi- ties. Sophomore year brings a strength- ening of friendships and a realization of their class identity. Juniors take in an awareness of the future while they en- joy good times. Their relationships grow as they share their memories of the past year. Reaching out to others is a good feeling which we find diffi- cult to express in words. Through Operation Charlie and Apostolic Service we have gained even more than we have given. Other activities such as the Cotillion and the Drama Club are fun times when we relate to our friends in a different atmosphere. The Student Council gives us a chance to exercise leadership and responsibility within the Fenwick Community. We have acquired through these activities closer relationships while strengthening our individuality. JUNIOR COTILLION The moment may be temporary, but the memory is forever. Through the various sports I have played, I have learned to celebrate unselfishly the joy of victory and cope with the reality of defeat, striving to come back stronger in the following game. Although much emphasis is placed on winning, I have learned that there is another goal to be reached by every participant: that the players can walk off the field content, knowing that regard- less of the final outcome, everyone has given his best, all 101% of it. This is truly the mark of a championship coaching staff and team. I have one final thing to say to all my coaches and fellow teammates, Thanks .
