Sciences An affinity with one’s surroundings is a necessity in order that a person be well rounded. The Science courses at Bishop Fenwick offer each student this important responsibility. Besides the factual knowledge gained, it is the belief of the instructors that the development of a good thinking process is the most valuable asset an student can attain for present activities and later life situations. Sister Dorothy Marie, the departmental head, expresses the need for scientific thinking in life in this way: “We must be open to what the reality is — not what we think it should be or presume it is. Life demands a testing and an experimentation.” In addition to the usual courses of physical science, biology, chemistry and physics that Fenwick offers each year, a new course, biochemistry, designed to challenge a limited number of students interested in going further in research, was added. Other teachers in the science department are; Mr. William Kyle, Sister Catherine George and Miss Sandra Shirock. Mr. William Kyle Sr. Dorothy Marie Miss Sandra Shirock 26

Fine Arts Miss Janet Walsh “The arts are presented for the student who appreciates a well-rounded education which provides for a broader means of self expression.” Miss Janet Walsh, a rookie here at Fenwick, teaches general art, graphic arts, and the f ine art classes. This year the students studied art through the ages. Miss Walsh conducted a close study of op to pop art in her senior classes. She also exposed the students to some movie making. The music program at Fenwick was cut short this year because of the illness Sister Julie Miriam experienced. Sister hoped to have the classes parallel that of the art by starting with music through the ages. The idea was off to a good start, but had to be discontinued. 25
