Sidewalk markets locked up tight, and umbrellas bright on a gray background. There’s oil on the puddles in taffeta patterns that run down the drain In colored arrangements that Michael will change with a stick that he found.’’ — Michael from Mountains Monsignor Joseph J. Bukay Sister Marie Rose Julie One of the most important parts of Fenwick is the administration and the faculty. These dedicated people try in various ways to stimulate each student to become a better member of society intellectually and socially. Bishop Fenwick operates under the direction of Sister Marie Rose Julie, principal. Sister tries to be in touch with students by using the public address system and personal meetings in her office or the corridor. Sister Marie Rose speaks of the Senior Board meetings, a new channel of communication, invaluable in the way they provide a real level of communication between the senior teachers, the students and herself. Monsignor Joseph J. Bukay is the outstanding man in each student ' s life at Fenwick. Besides functioning as head of the religion department, Monsignor moderates the Kennedy Club, the Booster ' s Club and the Fathers’ Club. He is the one who is always there to help everyone. Sister Anne Elizabeth plays a dual role as vice-principal in charge of discipline, and teacher. Sister can be found anywhere doing things for every student at Fenwick. She believes strongly in individual achievement. Sister teaches personal typing. 24 Fine Arts Miss Janet Walsh “The arts are presented for the student who appreciates a well-rounded education which provides for a broader means of self expression.” Miss Janet Walsh, a rookie here at Fenwick, teaches general art, graphic arts, and the f ine art classes. This year the students studied art through the ages. Miss Walsh conducted a close study of op to pop art in her senior classes. She also exposed the students to some movie making. The music program at Fenwick was cut short this year because of the illness Sister Julie Miriam experienced. Sister hoped to have the classes parallel that of the art by starting with music through the ages. The idea was off to a good start, but had to be discontinued. 25 Sciences An affinity with one’s surroundings is a necessity in order that a person be well rounded. The Science courses at Bishop Fenwick offer each student this important responsibility. Besides the factual knowledge gained, it is the belief of the instructors that the development of a good thinking process is the most valuable asset an student can attain for present activities and later life situations. Sister Dorothy Marie, the departmental head, expresses the need for scientific thinking in life in this way: “We must be open to what the reality is — not what we think it should be or presume it is. Life demands a testing and an experimentation.” In addition to the usual courses of physical science, biology, chemistry and physics that Fenwick offers each year, a new course, biochemistry, designed to challenge a limited number of students interested in going further in research, was added. Other teachers in the science department are; Mr. William Kyle, Sister Catherine George and Miss Sandra Shirock. Mr. William Kyle Sr. Dorothy Marie Miss Sandra Shirock 26 Math Sr. Jeanne Francis Sr. Catherine St. Michael, Miss Charlotte Malski, Sr. Jeanne Francis, Mr. William Kyle, Mr. Paul Lyness. Setting a challenge for each student is a main factor in any course at Fenwick, but most especially in mathematics. A goal that is in sight is one that will stimulate and motivate the student to greater achievement. As in the sciences, math helps to develop the individual resources of the individual. Mathematical analysis plays a relevant role in each of the academic subjects. Any problem can be solved through mathematical analysis. At Fenwick, math is required for three years. The faculty makes every effort to respond to the needs of the individual through advanced, accelerated, and average grouping, and by specific attention. Math is now an elective in the senior year, thus providing a larger concentration for the college bound student. The Math department consists of Sister Teresa Patricia, Miss Malski, Sister Jeanne Frances, Sister Catherine St. Michael, Mr. Kyle, and Mr. Lyness. 28 Miss Charlotte Malski and Sr. Teresa Patricia 29 Sr. Ellen St. Thomas Sr. Joan Michele 30 V Languages Sr. Ellen St. Thomas, Sr. Maureen, Mr. Joseph Ward, Miss Mary McElroy, Mr. Thomas Car- mody, Sr. Joan Michele, Sr. Winifred Julie. Language is the basis of communication. By its very nature it creates a bond between peoples. The foreign languages at Bishop Fenwick play an important role in a student’s life. They include French, Spanish, and Latin. Through them he learns “respect for his mind and personality” as well as that of others. Fenwick’s language facilities are excellent. Most teachers make frequent use of the language lab and the library of tapes. The head of the French Department, Sister Joan Michele feels that “it is important for the student to hear more than one voice speaking a foreign language.” Sister Ellen St. Thomas teaches Spanish. Assisting Sister Joan Michele are Mr. Thomas Carmody and Miss Mary McElroy. Latin teachers are: Sister Winifred Julie, Mr. Joseph Ward, and Sr. Maureen. 31 English The English Department is headed by Sister Bernadette Marie. Sister is aided by Sister Ann Mary, Sister Mary Elizabeth, Miss Nadeau, Miss McElroy, Mis Walsh, Sister Winifred Julie, Sister Kathleen Elizabeth, Sister Maureen and Sister Ann Marie. The aim of the English department is to relate themes of literature to contemporary life. The importance of literature can be seen in both the large size of the department, and the manner in which the subject is presented. English is required for four years, the first three consists of one period in which grammar, composition and literature are presented together. For the senior year, the student is given a more in depth approach having separate periods for composition and literature. The universality of life is evident in the relation of the deep emotions and feelings of one person to another. The English department has tried, through great literature to make each student see that he is a part of something much larger than himself. This year, the realism of experience was enlarged to Fenwick students by the use of contemporary movies. Each level was able to attend such movies as ■‘2,001: A space Odyssey, “Romeo and Juliet” and ‘‘The Subject Was Roses.” Sr. Ann Marie, Sr. Bernadette Marie, Miss Janet Walsh, Miss Nadeau, Sr. Mary Elizabeth, Sr. Kath- leen Elizabeth, Miss Mary McElroy, Sr. Ann Mary, Sr. Maureen, Sr. Winifred Julie. 32 Sr. Bernadette Marie Sr. Kathleen Elizabeth 33 Social Studies The Social Studies department of Bishop Fenwick is under the supervision of Mr. Alex Kulevich. Supporting him in his co-ordinating role are Mr. Ralph Le Due, Sr. Carol, Sr. Patricia Frances, Miss Angela Slingluff, and Mr. Joseph Ward. The History department includes the courses Economics, Geography, United States History, World History, and World Problems. The latter is a new course designed to challenge the student planning to continue his education in the Social Studies area. World Problems is essentially a course in which the students analyze current events in relation to the world situation. Each of the teachers in the department agrees that the needs of the students are the most important factors to be considered in teaching. Mr. Kulevich feels that in order to reach a level of communication with the students he must capture their interest. By “relating past history to current events,” Mr. Kulevich tries to reach, and then challenge each student. Miss Slingluff transmits her own enthusiasm through the “involvement of the students. Mr. Ward expresses the purpose of teaching when he says, “I believe in the dignity and worth of each and every individual.” 34 Staff Miss Madeline Murray For six years, Mr. Philip Hopkins and Miss Madeline Murray have worked in Bishop Fenwick ' s Guidance department providing valuable service to prospective college entrants. As chief counsel- lor, Mr. Hopkins helps prepare the students for their career goals. Mr. Hopkins regards the Guidance office as an “informa- tion center”, and he places great emphasis on the effort to “get to know the students”. With an eye toward expansion, important innovations have been made in the Guidance department. Many of the homeroom teachers now act as college advisers in an attempt to counsel both Seniors and underclassmen more effectively. Under the direction of Sr. Madeleine Louise, the Library was expanded to reach a size of 8,050 volumes. The aim of the Library is to provide the students with a functional department for reference work or reading for pleasure. Sr. Madeleine is aided in the Library by Sr. Julienne of the Sacred Heart. The constant flow of students and teachers in the front office is kept under control by Mrs. John Michaels, Fenwick’s recep- tionist. Mrs. Michaels is the lady behind “sound” and last minute announcements. Acting as secretary to Sr. Marie Rose Julie is Mrs. John Reilly. Mrs. Reilly is responsible for maintaining administrative efficiency. It is the duty of the Janitorial staff to cope with any emergency, from a jammed locker to a smoking incinerator. Mr. Sousa, Mr. Kochakian, and Mr. Ruane maintain the smooth, polished look characteristic of Bishop Fenwick. Each day the Cafeteria, headed by Mrs. Harriet Putney, prepares and serves the lunch program to hungry Fenwick stu- dents. The staff itself is given a boost by mothers of the stu- dents who come daily to sell milk, scrape plates, or help with the dishes. Sr. Madeleine Louise Mr. Philip Hopkins 36 r; The Class Of 1969 Michael J. Murphy Carole J. Moore Each Senior can look back on his years at Fenwick and say, “Hey! It was great while it lasted, but now it’s gone, and ... No matter how lightly one brushes high school days away, they are still there as four years, each a lifetime in itself. Each is compiled of seconds and hours, days and weeks, melted into one intangible moment, one memory, either the smell of sulfur in the chemistry lab, the sound of a few announcements before the bell, the feel of Chris’ sloppy tongue, the sight of the winning basket, or the taste of a Treadwell’s frappe. Still, as a Senior, one learns to grasp the intangible, approach the unapproachable, and reach out to those he has never met before. In our “saying good-bye” year at Fenwick, we Seniors have tried to realize the value of people and their personalities. To talk to someone seriously, on a person-to-person level takes effort. But a reciprocal expression of ideas, whether it be through LANCE, WICK, announcements, class meetings, or locker discussions, is the only real way to understanding. With understanding comes the realization, “I am not alone in the world,” and the opening of a path of peace marked by road signs reading, “Communication”. If each Senior can believe in the power of words and tolerance, then he can look back and say, “Hey! Fen-life was great while it lasted, and its essence is still with me, so I’m going to go out and ...” Richard M. St. Pierre Linda M. Mizzi Anthony E. Porcelto 40 Kathleen V. Blute Deborah S. Varsity coaches Mr. Kulevich and Mr. LeDuc, could find little to complain about, though, as the players fought hard and stubbornly to win against tough opposition. Sacrifice and guts seemed to be key words, as many injured players fought on the field until the end of a game before surrendering to injuries. Tri-Captain Sosnowski played well on offensive, and performed exceptionally well on defense, returning a number of fumbles for touchdowns. Barry Shepperson had a very successful season as offensive end and defensive back. He was the leading Fenwick receiver with a total of 29 catches. Barry also played well on defensive, picking-off enemy passes. Tri-Captains Tony Correia and Dave Jacques also looked good. Jacques played five different positions including quarterback and did “a really fine job” according to Head Coach Kulevich. The team managed to come up with two ties, one a scoreless against Cathedral, the other, a 6-6 tie against Austin Prep. On Thanksgiving the team played well, but mistakes gave St. Mary’s of Lynn the margin in a 22-12 squeaker. The most promising element of the season, was the fact that underclassmen played an important part on the whole team, especially the backfield, led by Emile Mercier and Richie Prior, who stepped in for the injured Kev Moore. He did an outstanding job as quarterback, being tutored by Paul Lyness, the J. V. Coach. The rest of the backfield consisted of Juniors, Mark LaMontagne and Don McGrane, and Sophomore Tom Keating. With this returning of players and the new Freshmen team, trained by Coach Gibbons, prospects look good for the next year. V.’s wound up a superb season on Thanksgiving week, being forced to bow only to Salem High in a close 6-0 game. Through team spirit and athletic skill, they nailed their opponents. Alternating quarterbacks, Joe Doyle and Don Ellis, spurred the team on this season, and promise to be top-notch in the coming two years. Juniors Gibbons and Gleason provided a firm backbone that proved to be invaluable for the team effort. In thinking about the season, J. V. Coach Lyness feels perhaps the greatest moment came in the game against Lynn English, when his team recovered the ball and returned it a startling 99 yards to score the winning touchdown. Few observers doubt that Fenwick will again lead the Catholic Conference with such fine and upcoming players now on the varsity roster. The freshmen team under the direction of Coach Gibbons and assistant John Lund had a much rougher time of it this season than the J. V.’s, but, with time and effort, optimism is expressed that they, too, will turn out to be topnotch players. Although hampered by smallness, they made a praiseworthy showing against lines twice their size through sheer determination. 106 J.V. Although the team did not rank as high as the team would have liked, the team learned the meaning of sportsmanship, spirit, and real team work. This year Captain Tony Porcello kept the spirit instilled despite the grinding battle of the year. Tony was backed by high scorers Kieth Oullette and John Murphy. Tom Sowinski starred as center this year. Other members of the team were Richie Prior, Pete Dylingowski, John Kelly, and John Mroz. 109 Varsity Evens Up: J.V. Maintains Successful Season The spirited girls Varsity basketball team compiled a 4 and 6 record under the coaching of Miss Sandra Shirock and the leadership of Co-Captains Mary Twomey and Judy Quinn. The girls were vying for first place, but suffered a crushing defeat to Saint Mary’s of Lynn. Although the season was not completely successful, the girls ended the season in third place. The girls achieved great goals of teamwork and spirit. Their rugged practices and workouts strengthened the team spirit, and pulled them through some tight situations. The Junior Varsity had a very successful season. Facing Arlington Catholic with a 9 and 0 record, the team was determined for a 10 and 0 slate. However, the girls forfeited this last game of the season because the team lost its way to Arlington. Co-Captains for the team were sophomores Peggy Prior and Mary Lynch. The 1969 LANCE tells the story of Bishop Fenwick High School. High school years, some people say, are the best years of one’s life. Here at Fenwick, we have grown in all aspects of life, intellectual, social and personal. Fenwick presented us with something we never could see before; we were with about nine hundred people that acted nine hundred different ways. No matter how different they were, though, each person realized the importance of a true understanding and communication with others. Fenwick is just a high school, a building like any other, until the corridors ring with laughter and tears, conversations and arguments, all the ups and downs that people experience. Fenwick people to the outside world are categorized as students or faculty. To the observant eye, however, Fenwick people are one working together, sharing together, cheering others on, helping, laughing with, crying with people. Fenwick is no bowl of cheeries; it has its problems. But in the end, you see people being people. The following six pages say more than I could ever say. They picture Fenwick people being genuine. Each picture says ultimately the same thing, “We may forget everything our textbooks said but we shall never forget the Fen people”. The greatest thing Fenwick is, is our friends and what they give us, even if it is just a smile. A Fenwick Student, Kathleen A.
