Mingling of minds Although the idea for Inter-Club Council origi- nated with the Student Council, it functioned as an entirely separate organization. At the first meeting held on October 21, a constitution for the Council was ratified and the purposes of the club were determined. Inter-Club Council was organized with three main objectives: first, to promote school spirit; second, to unite the clubs by an i ncreased program of co-operation among them; third, to keep the students informed of various club activities. The Council ' s constitution required three offi- cers: a president to run the meetings and appoint committees, a vice-president to take charge of reports and evaluate activities, and a secretary to record the minutes of the meetings and to carry on all necessary correspondence. Officers were: Gabriel Rossi, president; Robert Peirce, vice-presi- dent; and Mary Manning, secretary. The Inter-Club Council was composed of one representative from each club and three represen- tatives from the Student Council. Mr. Paul Lyness acted as faculty advisor. Project Hope Week was the main project of the Council. A physician from Danvers who served on the ship Hope for two months, Dr. Auchenback, inaugurated the week with an assembly by relating his experiences on board the hospital ship and by showing a movie about the services of its staff. Proceeds raised from all activities held during this week were donated to the Hope. Besides their Project Hope Week, the Inter- Club Council held dances for the benefit of various school clubs. In preparation for these dances, each club performed a specific duty. This new spirit of co-operation helped to make Fenwick dances more organized and more successful this year. 60 Bob Peirce, Paul Hennessy and Ellen Stanley ponder assembly suggestions. President Gabe Rossi gives advice to Donna LeBlanc, Cindy Manzi and Dick Manning. Representatives Bob Peirce, Ellen Stanley, Sheila McGarr, Paul Hennessy, Cindy Manzi and Dick Manning volunteer ideas for Project Hope Week. 61 Student Council . . . Voice of the students Under the leadership of President James Manzi, the Student Council assumed a new role in planning and coordinating the activities of the school year. Jim and Council moderator Sister Helen Cornelia attended a summer conference of Student Councils at the University of Massachusetts. The ideas they brought back gave the Council new goals and projects to carry out. The formation of the Inter-Club Council was a direct result of the University workshop. In this new organization, representatives of all Fenwick clubs worked together to insure the success of their individual projects. This year the Council adopted parliamentary procedure, formed standing committees to plan rallies, assemblies and special events like Teacher Appreciation Day, and took care of maintenance for the Fenwick bus. The Council also sponsored a Swap-Shop of Catholic high school Councils to promote inter-school interest and to trade opinions and methods. Members of the Council ' s Executive Board were Linda Spence and Stephen Kearns, senior represen- tatives, and Sharon O ' Brien and Edward Bussone, junior representatives. President Jim Manzi speaks to the councillors. Girls serving on Student Council were: First row — S. Manzi, M. Ouellette, M. Hennessey, M. Ronan, T. Bussone, S. O ' Brien, board member; D. Welch, L. Service for all The National Honor Society, moderated by Sister Helen Cornelia, has distinguished itself as an organization whose members are characterized by the basic qualities of character, scholarship, leadership, and service. This year, National Honor members executed many notable projects. The Student Aid Program, organized under the direction of Mary Essember, was designed to aid those students who were having difficulty in a particular subject. Other projects sponsored by the society included writing to alumni, aiding at school functions, plan- ning a cultural excursion, and working to provide a partial scholarship for an incoming freshman. A committee headed by Marie Witwicki com- piled a list of alumni who wished to receive current news of Fenwick activities. Individual members of the National Honor Society then received the name of an alumnus to keep supplied with school news by either personal letters or newspaper clippings. Lucinda Manzi worked with her committee to discover facts necessary in planning the cultural excursion. The officers of the Society were: James Manzi, president; Mary Essember, vice-president; Marie Witwicki, treasurer; and Lucinda Manzi, secretary. Debate . . . Argument for a purpose The Bishop Fenwick debate team won a first place position in the regular season of the North Shore Debate League. In the past two years the debaters have brought home over 40 speaker and team awards. All varsity members of the team, Ralph Silva, Terry McGee, John Steele, Liz Lund, received the highest honor of the National Forensic League — the degree of distinction. The novice members displayed their unmatched technique in debating, dropping only two contests in the North Shore circuit. This year ' s topic, Resolved: That the foreign aid program of the U.S. should be limited to non- military assistance, proved a challenging and re- warding subject to all involved. The officers of the squad were Ralph Silva, president; Terry McGee, vice-president; Dan Steele, treasurer; and Delpfine Welch, secretary. 67 French club members were: Front row — M. Newhall, A. Outstanding meetings of the year featured guest speakers, a French film and a traditional Christmas supper. Sister Ruth Marie of the French department of Emmanuel College visited the club early in the year to present slides of France. The teenager ' s life in France was the topic covered by Fr. Garonne of St. John ' s Prep at another meeting. The delightful award-winning movie, Le Ballon Rouge gave the members a wonderful picture of Paris. The club highlighted the Christmas season with a popular Reveillon, a Christmas meal. Exploring the unknown This year the enrollment of the science club increased considerably. The 40 members were pro- vided with the opportunity to investigate all the sciences. Every Tuesday and Wednesday afternoon the students conducted chemistry experiments or viewed biology films. The boys worked with elec- trical systems for a few weeks. The senior mem- bers assisted the underclassmen in the procedure of lab technique. Interesting programs such as speakers in scien- tific professions and field trips to industrial plants and labs were planned by Donna LeBlanc, president; Raymond LeBlanc, vice president; Judith Theriault, secretary; and Dianne Holmes, treasurer, under the supervision of Sister Catherine George. A new program was initiated on Monday eve- nings. Mr. Donald Lutz, a liaison of Avco in Everett and of the advisory council of New England Educators, spoke on several subjects including the practical solution to the problem of missile re-entry; he also instructed the group in the principles of the slide rule. The sophomore and freshman members of the science club were: Seated — S. Manzi, C. Moore, S. Hines, M. Ouellette, Jan Drabczuk and Art Garrity study an amoeba. 71 Marie Fouhey checks a call card Library Science Club . . . Aiding knowledge Under the supervision of Sister Madeleine Louise and Sister Catherine St. Michael, the Library Science Club sought to learn about library work and gain practical experience in the operation of a library. Members ' duties were divided into two general categories: preparing the books for general circu- lation and releasing them to the students. Fenwick ' s library possesses over 7,000 books including many valuable reference works. Before these bocks could be placed on the shelves, library aides performed various tasks: typing file cards and circulation cards, marking spine numbers, bringing the card catalogue up to date, and covering the books. After the books had been completely processed, they were put on the shelves for the students ' use. Library aides helped students to find specific bocks for required reading, term paper writing, or light, pleasure reading. Each library aide reported to the library one afternoon a week and worked behind the desk to receive and stamp out books, or in the back room to prepare new books for release. Officers of the library science dub were: Mary Manning, president; Marie Fouhey, vice-president; and Maureen O ' Meara, secretary. . Serving as Library Aides were S. Hoskinson, S. Kane, Menici, M. Fouhey, vice-president; M. Manning, P. Jalbert, S. Walker, M. O ' Meara, secretary; K. president; P. Cena, M. Smith, J. Camenga. Representing Fenwick at math meets were G. Golden, M. Essember, S. Ortins, N. Donahue. Mary Essember and Cindy Manzi show that two heads are better than one. Mary Essember, Debbie Heffernan, Cindy Manzi and Noreen Donahue work on a team question. Mathletes . . . Analysis and solution Even Mathletes Debbie Heffernan and Noreen Donahue have problems. The Mathletes were coached by Miss Paula Groszyk. Senior members, Lucinda Manzi, Noreen Donahue, and Mary Essember, provided the spirit and ability necessary to head any successful team. Underclassmen who participated as Mathletes were Gerald Golden, Deborah Heffernan, and Suzanne Ortins. Mathletes performed admirably in their meets this year. In the first meet of the season, held at Cardinal Cushing Central High, they finished a strong sixth out of twenty teams. At Hingham, in their second meet, Mathletes displaying determina- tion and improved techniques captured the coveted second place. In each of their meets, the Mathletes have distinguished themselves and Fenwick. 73 The Lance . . . Our year in review During the summer, Lance editors Alice Walton and Marianne Newhall attended a yearbook con- ference at Catholic University in Washington, D. C. The techniques they learned there were applied to the Lance and have given a new look to the year- book. During the month of November the Lance ran a subscription campaign, initiated by Mr. Richard Weir from the American Yearbook Company. The rise in sales enabled the Lance staff to increase the page size and the number of pages of the book, and to cover more fully all aspects of the school year. Coordinators Sue Cashman, Ellen McCarthy, Dave Phillips, Mariann Ronan, Robert Peirce, and Rose Horrigan worked with the editors and Sister John Dolores, advisor, to produce the 1967 Lance Editor Marianne Newhall instructs John Quinn in enlarging pictures. The written word The Wick, the school newspaper, merited a First Class category rating by the National Scholastic Press Association and a second prize awarded by the International Quill and Scroll for excellence in journalism. The Wick provided the student body with pre- views of future school and community events, spot- lights on outstanding students, reviews of movies and plays, editorials on current problems, and a comprehensive review of important school activities. It also gave its members insights into the field of journalism. This year ' s editors also taught layout procedure to the entire staff so that all members, rather than just the editors, would be capable of submitting layouts. Senior editors were: Wendy Kallas, editor-in- chief; Maureen O ' Meara, page 2 editor; Marie Fouhey, page 3 editor; Paul White, sports editor; and Mary Manning, exchange editor. Elections of new junior editors were held in January. The Wick followed a policy of early elec- tion to enable the juniors to work with the seniors and to gain practical experience before they take over the paper next year. New editors are: Eileen Haley, Terrence McGee, co-editors-in-chief; Pau- lette Gauthier, page 2; Scott Borrelli, page 3; Richard Sobocinski, sports editor; and Fred Berry, associate sports editor. 76 Scott Borrelli, page 3 editor ' 68, and Richard Sobo- cinski, sports editor ' 68, review material for the Wick. People on the move Kennedy club, moderated by Father Bukay and Sister Bernadette Marie, was made up of boys from all four classes dedicated to serving others. As well as benefiting the school and surrounding communi- ties Kennedy Club helped to build strong character and leadership in its members Officers for this year were: Stephen Kearns, president; Richard Boyd, vice-president; and An- thony Porcello, secretary. Kennedy club originated a new project for trips Standing — E. Hanlon, M. Tierney, B. Guerrette, D. Bowes, J. MacLeod, D. Pimenta. to Danvers State Hospital. In the beginning of the school year, members went to Danvers simply for a tour of the hospital. Many of the members found this tour so interesting they decided to sign up for volunteer work. Three groups were organized, as many other students not in the Kennedy club vol- unteered to help. They visited Danvers once a week, talking and playing games with the patients. Together with the girls ' sodality, the Kennedy club sponsored the annual Christmas Cotillion dur- ing the Christmas vacation. Both organizations worked extremely hard to make the affair a success. Other Kennedy club activities included the sale of cider during the Thanksgiving season and the sale of candy at Fenwick basketball games. The money was used to buy Christmas baskets and to support foreign missions. 78 Members of the girls ' Sodality were: Front row — R. Hor- rigan, N. Blanchard, D. Neary, J. Ma Ilia, J. Okker, S. On the Board of Di rectors were Sharon O ' Brien, Ellen Stanley, Eileen Hennessy and Angela Themes. The freshman girls ' sodality, directed by Sister Mona, formed an active subgroup to the senior sodality. Before freshmen were allowed to enter the main sodality, they had to learn the sodality way of life by membership in this preliminary so- dality. As their Christmas project, freshman Sodality members sponsored a drive for canned goods, toys and clothing for poor children. The drive, widely publicized throughout the school by means of ap- pealing posters, was a tremendous success. Fresh- man officers included: Barbara Cawley, prefect; Jean Fleming, vice-prefect; Luanne Nardella, secre- tary; and Adele Mroz, treasurer. Girls in the freshman Sodality were: Front row — E. Talent and service J 4 A community club ? The art club filled that description well, working to help all the other clubs in the school advertise coming events and decorate wherever and whenever there was something special going on. At the Christmas Cotillion art club mem- bers transformed the gymnasium into a charming New England village. Members made and hung decorations for many activities, including the Valentine and other club dances. Advertisements adorned the school corri- dors weeks in advance for school happenings. Besides serving the school, art club helped to develop the talents of its members who learned to apply the basic ideas of sculpture as they created original statues. Oil painting, traditional and mod- ern, was also offered with an emphasis on shape and form. Acquired skills increased the artistic talents of members and will prove beneficial in the students ' futures. The hard work of Mary Essember, club president, and Sister Michael Raymond, moder- ator, made the art club program a success. The boys give full participa- tion in their weekly practice sessions. Glee Club . . . People and song The Glee Club had a total of 95 members this year. Each Wednesday the fifty-five girls in the club met for practice; each Tuesday the forty boys in the club met. Joint meetings of the two groups were held on Tuesdays and Wednesdays every five or six weeks. During December the Glee Club performed at the Ivy Rest Home in Salem and for the student body at an assembly. Most important to the mem- bers was their appearance at the Fine Arts concert on April 23rd and the Annual Spring Concert on May 21 st. Through the year the members of the Glee Club, under the direction of Sister Ellen St. Anne, were given an outlet for their musical talents. By super- vised choral practice the discipline necessary for display was instilled. A chance to show achieve- ment and to experience stage entertainment was provided through the several concerts during the year. In defense of the championship The Bishop Fenwick Crusaders rolled to their fifth straight winning season in 1966, chalking up a 7-2 record, good enough for second place in the Catholic Central League and fifth in the overall state Class C ratings. In the course of the year, Fenwick extended the state ' s longest streak to fifteen games. The skein was halted by a 28-8 loss to the league ' s newest entry, Xaverian of Westwood, which went on to cop the league and state championships. This year ' s squad was captained by Jack Mercier, Bernie Mitchell, and Walt Dyke Diachisin. With the excep- tion of the loss to Xaverian, a tight 14-8 win over Cathedral, and the heart-breaking 7-6 loss to St. Mary ' s on Thanksgiving, Fenwick completely outclassed its opponents, outscoring the opposition 194-73. The out- standing record of this year ' s squad firmly entrenched Fenwick ' s position as a Class C powerhouse, and proved that the Fenwick brand of football is second to none. Everybody plays More boys participated in intramural basket- ball than in any other sport, because you don ' t have to be good to play. There were no stars in the intramural program, since the varsity and junior varsity players were ineligible. The key to victory was teamwork. Keen competition grew up between the different homerooms, and large cheering sections gave the teams added incentive and livened up the game. Class champs in the boys ' divisions were: 402, 304, 204, 104. Be- cause of its late start, girls ' intramurals will be covered in the supplement. This year ' s 2-7 record in winter track competition is very deceptive, for despite its dismal appearance, the season had many bright spots. Steve Lowe and Paul White set new records in the 1000 yard run and the mile respectively. The relay team of Darci, Moore, Ouellette, and Farley submitted an excellent time, while high scorer Mike Keating kept the team in the contests. Coach Ralph LeDuc has much to look forward to next year, for the juniors and sopho- mores were the backbone of this year ' s team. Voted the most valuable player by the league coaches was Dick Landers. Bill Sullivan and Mike Phelan were elected most valuable players by the North Shore League. The wrestling team, a new addition to Fenwick ' s athletic clubs, was coached this year by Jim Kelley, a Fenwick graduate. Although the team participated in no league matches, they learned many new holds and techniques. The coaching duties of the 1967 tennis team were assumed by Mr. Paul Lyness. With his guid- ance the team finished the season with a 4-4 record. This year only four seniors, who contributed greatly, are leaving. Since we are young, we do like to be on the move. We like to be where the action is; we are a restless generation. All of us have witnessed a lift-off of one of the great rockets that hurls an astro- naut into space. There is the count-down, the violent jet exhaust, and off it goes, up, up, and then it begins to arc, to bend in a certain direction. We, the students of a jet age, are off the launching pad, and we are beginning to bend in a certain direction. It is, of course, the fuel that projects the great missile. What has been the fuel that has been pushing us forward? It is a mixture of many things: the love and discipline of our parents, the things we have seen them do, as well as say. It is the contact we have had with teachers; the words we have listened to since the very first grade; the geography, spelling, arithmetic; the stories of God, of Mary and Joseph, and the more advanced intellectual experience of our high school years. It is the religious experiences we have had, the Communions we have received, the confes- sions we have made, the prayers we have said, our Confirmation. It is the friendships we have made, the rough give and take of the locker room, the basketball court, the football field. And it is the gentler influence of the women we have known: our mother, the Sisters, the girls we have liked and admired. All those things and many more have influ- enced the direction we are taking. Speaking for my classmates today, I would like to thank you all . . . The Sisters, pray for us as the years go on ... we will always, in a sense, need your help . . . the lay faculty, the men who have taught us, sometimes by just being what they are rather than by anything they said . . . the young women on the faculty, also, for their patience and example . . . Father Bukay and all the priests who have ever helped us when sometimes we have stumbled and been foolish . . . and last, and far from least, the ones we love the most at this stage of our life, our mothers and our fathers. For the seventeen or eighteen years of sacrifice and love you have given to us, our deepest appreciation. As the astronaut flies high, we, the young people of a jet age, will try to fly high too, in our moral life, in our service of people, in our relationship to God. We thank you for the good lift-off you have given to us. We thank you for the opportunity to be graduates of Bishop Fenwick High. A long-awaited day , A procession of graduates , A handshake and a diploma , Terry ' s speech , Tears and laughter , Farewells . . . Graduation. 30
