BASKETBALL HISTORY The Bishops opened the new season hy ealming the Tidalwave of Beaufort 77-31. The hoys displayed .1 fine aggressive attaek sparked hy the entire team. llowever, the main reason was the fine teamwork. WVal- ter LaTorre and Bevo Clair we1'e the pointinakers, get- ting 19 and IS points respectively. Following the Beaufort game the Bishops aeeepted an invitation to the first College of Charleston lloliday lnvitational Baskethall Tournament. The Bishops drew a hve for the first round hut met the Summerville Green XVaye for their first eneounter. The hoys had little trouhle in disposing of the XVave hy a 653-53-1 seore. The Bishops then met their old rival, the Charles- ton lligh Sehool Bantams. The Bishops played wide awake hall to drop them hy a 55-28 margin. VValter LaTorre. lfraneis Clair and Frankie Eaton reeeived All- tournament honors with the most valuahle award going to 1,.aTorre. After the holidays were over the Bishops resumed the season hy overeoming the College of Charleston Frosh 56-37. Teamwork proved to he the deciding faetor in the vietory. Clair and Eaton tipped the haskets for 16 points eaeh. Thrt e days later the Bishops met the Chieora Eagles, a promising and stuhhorn eontestant for the Greater Charleston area. The Bishops proved too mueh for the Eagles. dumping them hy Torre were high men for points respectively. The Bishops. faeing i sehedule, met the Citadel lfrosh. Entering the game with a 7-O record the Bishops were played down to the eore in stopping the Bantams hy a 54--18 seore. l.aTorre was the hig man, getting a week of layover the Bishops hit the road their previously heaten toes. the Beaufort They ehalked up vietory munher seven hy Bei ini' Snusrcv, Manager sixty-yivc 22 points. This was the seeond defeat the Bantams snH'ered at the hands of the Bishops. After nine straight wins to the Bishops, err-dit, the hoys were out to prove what kind of a eluh they really had. They proved to he Championship material hy edging out the Bivers Bears 40-38, Bishop England's elosest game of the season. The game was hard fought through the entire four quarters. The team played great hall as a whole. Tommy Finnegan, the Bishops' up and eoming guard, stood out with his fine defensive work. while Eaton played his usual fast game. The Bishops' aee forward, Vlfalter LaTorre, dumped the elineher in an overtime. three seeonds hefore the final gun. This vietory gave the Bishops wide recognition as heing the team to heat in the State. l,aTorre and Clair were high men getting respectively ll, 10 points. After the pressure was oft, the Bishops had little trouhle in crushing the St. Andrews Roc-ks, 61-33. The team as a wholf played fine hall with the reserve show- ing plenty ot strength. The Bishops, now hoasting a 10-0 reeord, made it 11 in a row hy dumping the North Charleston Blue Devils 7-1-38. Coach Witt used all of his hoys who did a Hne ioh. Pug Bavenel, Peewee Meliay and Ernie -lones showed plenty ot' promise as reserve strength. LaTorre again was the point-maker. gathering 28 points. The Bishops now were gaining more and more 1'CL'0g- nition as a top flight team and were really fighting to remain that way. The NVitt men were now meeting the Olympia Bed Devils, the State Class BN Champion, hoasting Donnie Arant, recognized as one of South Caro- linais hest haskethall plavers. They had no trouhle 83-49, holding a game down top man seor- a single game, though, for they dumped the Bed Dcivils Arant, who had an average of 32 points to 26 points. Center Bevo Clair was the ing the most points he has ever made in 32 points, followed hy XValter l,aTorre with 23. The hoys played their hest that night proving and living up to their standard as tops. Bishop England versus Summerville, The Bishops playing Summerville for the seeond time had a tough time heating them, hut managed to do so 67-64. The Green XYave was out for revenge and would have gotten it if it werenit for the eool thinking and ealmness on the part of Coaeh Witt and the hoys. Tommy Finnegan, employing a very niee iump-shot, hit the eords for 25 points. The Battling Bishops played their usual brand of hall, ir1 fact, introdueing talent that had heen hidden for some years. Danny Hohling, Tommy Finnegan, and ,loe Corman were all in the game adding up points. Though Danny wasn't high man, he reeeiyed recogni- tion as a fine player. LaTorre and Clair were high men with 21 and 20 points, in stopping the Chieora Eagles 6B--16. The Bishops were sad in going in to the fifteenth game. for they were going in there without the service of LaTorre. Having had seholastie trouhles, he would have to discontinue play as a Bishop, truly a great hall player. Coaeh YVitt and all the hoys really would miss him for the rest of the season. LaTorre had played an integral part of the team, hut the team had to go on, and go on they did. After rearranging and plenty of strategy Coaeh Hank XVitt eame up with a elnh more spirited and more eager to win. VVhen everyone thought the eiiips were down, the Bishops rode to fame, filling in Rohling and Fosherry for LaTorre. The Bishops were hard pressed hy a spirited St. Andrews elnh. who eame within a few points of eausing a catastrophe. The Rot-ks played consistent hall all night, holding the Bishops usually high seoring game down to an all-season low. llowever, the Bishops managed to pull through 15 in a row, stopping the CContinned on Page 691
