Valedictorian, Martha Hooper 2 5 I Salutatorian, Rhonda Roberts Martha, Rhonda content with Ist, 2nd Chosen as the l98l Valedictorian was Martha Hooper, with Rhonda Roberts earning the title of Salutatorian. These top students of the Senior Class were recognized for their outstanding academic skills. Being a top student has always been a goal for both Martha and Rhonda. They replied, We have worked very hard during these four years. It took a lot of studying and most of the time we had to give up doing other things, but it was worth it. Martha Hooper sees her past four years as a lot of fun and hard work. During my four years of high school, I accomplished a lot of things. But I still would have wanted to get involved in a few more things that I didn't get the chance to. Martha's future plans are to attend NAU to get a bachelor's degree in business and to get a masters degree from Thunderbird Academy in Scottsdale. Then she wants to go into foreign service. Rhonda Roberts was very surprised to be named the class Salutatorian. Her reaction was, It's great! I didn't think I had made it. She describes her high school years as having their 'ups and downs.' There was a period of time when Rhonda had a serious bone marrow transplant earlier in the year. Due to a successful operation, she was able to return to school and catch up on her schoolwork. lt was real hard coming back and trying to do all my work at once, but I knew it had to be done, replied Rhonda. Rhonda's plans are to travel to get some ideas and become 2 writer. CRemaining members of Top I0 pictured on opposites page. A total of II people shared the top ten grade point averagesj

Boys state representatives: From Top- Wayne Wilson, Pat Castellano, Lupe Parra. l l l Model UN Representatives: Kneeling-Joe Dugie. Standing-Ann Lehner, Martha Hooper, Diana Valenzuela. Martha receives top senior awards Many honors are awarded yearly. Some are the Bausch and Lomb, Girls and Boys state, and Model U.N. representatives. The model U.N. representatives chosen were Diana Valenzuela, .loe Dugie, Martha Hooper, Ann Lehner, and Shaun Kelly. These people attended the Model U.N. convention at the U of A on February 6 and 7. At the U of A they were shown how the U.N. was run and got some government experience. These I36 Honors people represented Luxembourg and the U.N. brought up proposals and they debated on them and discussed them. They were chosen by taking a test and the 2 top girls and 2 top boys were chosen with one alternate. Another honor given to a BHS student is the Bausch and Lomb award which was awarded to Martha Hooper. The Bausch and Lomb award is a science and math award and is awarded by Miss Nelson. To determine the recipient a point system is us where points are given for harder subjects in math and science and the one with the most points gets the award. Girls State and Boys State were held at the U of A for t girls and Flagstaff for the boy They went at the beginning o June. The representatives for Girls state were Daun Thorp. Martha Hooper, Regina Alshou Boys State representatives we Wayne Wilson, Pat Castellano, Joe Dugie, and Lupe Parra. E i E
