The varsity was relying on experienced players from last season to lead the way to a playoff spot. The junior varsity team, with new coaches, was looking for an improvement over the '79 season record. Injuries and inconsistency played havoc with the varsity teams and their high hopes turned into discouragement. The losses piled up, leading to a winless OIO record. The Pumas had few bright spots. Several of the players who figured to help the team were injured. The junior varsity team had a better year, finishing with a respectable 3-4-I record. The JV lost its first three games before breaking a I2 game JV losing streak with a win over Miami. The Pumas then added straight wins over Tombstone and Willcox. Bisbee then came from behind to tie a tough San Manuel team. When asked how else the team improved, Coach Lewinski stated, There was a big improvement over last year because we really had good teamwork. Teamwork seemed to be the key factor because without it the girls usually failed. Lewinski went on to say, We gave a lot of teams good competition, l really enjoyed watching the team play! The biggest highlight of the season was beating their arch- rivals, the Douglas Bulldogs. Margo Dietrich stated, lt felt really great beating Douglas in the opening game and again later on in the season. When asked what she thought of the season Kelly Douglass said, I think we had Sandra Amaya gets down in an effort to return the ball
