The varsity was relying on experienced players from last season to lead the way to a playoff spot. The junior varsity team, with new coaches, was looking for an improvement over the '79 season record. Injuries and inconsistency played havoc with the varsity teams and their high hopes turned into discouragement. The losses piled up, leading to a winless OIO record. The Pumas had few bright spots. Several of the players who figured to help the team were injured. The junior varsity team had a better year, finishing with a respectable 3-4-I record. The JV lost its first three games before breaking a I2 game JV losing streak with a win over Miami. The Pumas then added straight wins over Tombstone and Willcox. Bisbee then came from behind to tie a tough San Manuel team. Jerry Monje and Kevin Dunlap received all state honors for placing ninth and thirteenth respectively. A mark in history was made as a girls cross country team was added to the athletic program. It being their first year, they ended their season with an outstanding 7-5 record. Placing high in regular season meets and second in all invitationals, the girls showed they were a team to contend with. The girls team also had a fourth place finish at state. Sherry Marston and Patty Lopez received state honors for placing sixth and seventh respectively. The girls improved every week, l was surprised, especially since three of the girls didn't have any running experience, commented coach Suarez. The outstanding quality rather than quantity seemed to keep the Pumas on top continously throughout their season year after year. 5' ' x :.,,,-.. f ,A n 9 ' r f. -l Jerry Monie.
