I will hove a thousand memories. [ n ] [ 12 ] in memoriam Dr. Henry T. Shanks an exciting liberal, an ingratiating conversationalist, an extraordinary scholar, a memorable and distinctive educator, a great friend of the Hilltop. His true love for his students, his deep concern for colleagues and admiration for them, his full dedica- tion to the welfare of Birmingham-Southern College, all made him one of this community ' s, this state ' s rare men. The shock of his loss painfully persists. His memory will long be with us as green as warm spring- time on his Hilltop. Dedication Florida Herndan Sherrod Standing behind the desk in Hanson Hall is a gentle lady who for sixteen years has influenced the lives of Hilltoppers. Her influence has been directed to the instillment of higher ideals in the men and women of Southern. Her beautiful life, her love for the Hilltop and Hill- toppers makes her a great figure in the personal his- tory of our institution. We lovingly dedicate the 1960 edition of the SOUTHERN ACCENT to her. [ 15 ] faces of authority o faces with his family at a basketball game. Dr. Henry King Stanford has since he assumed the presidency of Birmingham-Southern College August 1, 1957, materially brightened the future of the school. Since he has been here, he has launched a ten-year, ten-million dollar development program for the college. Dr. Stanford, who before coming to Southern was president of the Georgia State College for Women at Milledgeville, received degrees from Emory, the University of Denver, and New York University. But most important, he has widened the scope of our outlook and gained our lasting respect for his abilities. His interest and participation in all phases of campus life; his vast experience and travels have stim- ulated Birmingham-Southern. He has gained the admiration and friend- ship of everyone he has encountered — students, faculty, administration and colleagues. of Showing guests around the campus. With students in the Cellar. This year the staff has attempted to bring about a tew changes in the annual. Some of the most noticeable are the duo-tone beauty and introductory sections, new division pages, cover, and full year coverage. We have tried to do more than give an account of the year ' s activities. We qttempted to give a feeling of the something that makes Southern ' s campus what it is.
