No chorus of We've got the spirit was ever answered louder, thus prov- ing that Our spirit is sky high. Our fantastic yell leaders and song leaders were answered on every cheer by the band, drill team. and pep club, and their spirit could be felt as well as heard for miles. We were together in our victories, and united in defeat. This certainly was a year in which we came together in spirit. r It ! No, we're not talking about the Varsity football team! This is a song that was used throughout the year and became the theme song of Mr. Wurfl, band director of the 1977-78 Marching Band. Led by drum majors, Kevin Briley and Chris Trott, they not only played this great song for Homecoming, but accompanied the Drill Team with such songs as Nothing,' from a Chorus Line, Jesus Christ Su- perstar, and Rocky , Twelve hours after Homecoming they found them- selves at our home stadium competing against other Los Angeles City Schools in the preliminarieslto see which schools would eventually go to the Sports Arena. They also competed at Northridge and marched with the Drill Team at Magic Mountain for Halloween. 6 , I .. ,g p ,nag if FWS 'el Fifi, ',- - Q if ,VI xiii lx' '. I V' L 1 7 'tl sad 7 ff EB ! f x, . Ap- proximately twenty wildlife organizations attended. Flo', the fifty foot whale balloon, was the biggest hit of the faire. Activists from Actors and Others for Animals, the Fund for Animals and the other groups presented information for students to take, as well as purchasable items of which a percentage of the profits went to specific animal aiding actions. The Wildlife Club sold animal crackers and Bir- mingham students were eager to buy. A Channel Five news camera was here to get words from orga- nizers of the faire Rob Eshman and Christine Dzil- velis. The organizations were very pleased with the faire and so was Birmingham. When you combine inspira- tional president Leslie Cane and six offic- ers full of incentive with the largest Fall Senior Council to ever materialize, and add to that the support of sponsor Mrs. Trimer, the result is inevitably innovative. New Games Day was an unprecedented event. Halloween Grams, balloon-selling, and Pooh senior t-shirts were all given a creative twist. Their original homecoming float Ease on Down the Roadn was the recipient of the Dad's Club Prize. The annual Powder-Puff football game and corresponding activities were also spon- sored by the council. 1 QV! Q fi, . Fall Senior Class Council Presi- dent, Leslie Cane, up a tree again. Twenty-second year coach James O'Hara tuned his players into one of the sharpest teams in the league. Many talented players helped give the team its strength, such as Bill Mercer, who was a key man and a very high scorer, and Sid Horn, who contributed a great deal despite an injury early in the season. Alan Hayes, one of the best 10th grade basketball players in the city, was also quite an asset to the Varsity team. Another beneficial asset to the team was Mike Bradley in the pole vault, also a dependable scorer and high placer in the league. The sprints and relays were dominated by Morris Wynn, who was as constant a source of spirit as he was a source of points. Dave Coleman showed his talented flexibility by running the mile re- lay, 880, mile, and two-mile at one time or another during the season. The team was also glad to have Mike Walker in the shot put, An- thony Manning in the high jump, and Wally Panel as a long jumper. 'i 1 ' David Burk, Editor It is practically impossible for me to describe my experience with the yearbook and what it has taught me. I know of few people who know how intense feelings become when a per- son is working on a project like the yearbook. There is the intense feeling of satisfaction after you meet a dead- line, the intense feeling of despair when you receive a phone call at two o'clock in the morning asking if you can come over and help paste seniors, and the intense feeling of achieve- ment which comes when you finally receive the completed book and it is appreciated by your peers. All of these feelings would never have been possible were it not for a few people, and I would like to show them my appreciation. First of all, to all staff members I say, You're nice, you're pretty, and I'll kiss you when you're dead! Secondly, thank to Freda, a girl with whom I have spent countless hours and for whom my love and respect is boundless. I'm not very easy to live with, especially when I'm under pressure, but Freda has put up with me for two years. Thirdly, to Mrs. Anderson, thank you for giving me this opportunity and the trust and independence to make it happen. Lastly, my deepest appre- ciation and love for all my friends, especially Jody for being there. The year in room 44 was filled with weirdness, jokes galore, green M8LM's, a lot of love, a little frustra- tion, and most of all, some of the best times of my life. ' N .av ff'-'pf . v 4 Freda Berman, Editor-In-Chief Being in charge of the 1978 TOMA- HAWK has been an unforgettable exper- ience. I have learned many thing over the past year, the most important of which is the abil- ity to tolerate and accept a variety of per- sonalities and attitudes. In particular, the yearbook staff has taught me this. The people on staff were all different when they came together in September of 1977. They each had different goals for the school year. But, throughout the year, the staff, while keeping their individual objectives in mind, came to- gether to work toward a common goal. This goal was to produce the best yearbook they could and the best in Birmingham's history. I have to congratulate them for working above and beyond the call of duty and at- taining their common goal. This is the year I learned to be a leader. This means I took responsibility for other people's actions as well as setting an example for the staff. I would like to thank a number of people for helping me to realize my po- tential as a leader. Mrs. Ann Anderson in- creased my awareness of my responsibility by giving me the opportunity to use my own judgement and make important decisions on a variety of issues. I thank David Burk, my right-hand man, for always being there when I needed him. My feelings of respect for David will never end. Jim and Pat of O'Con- nor Brothers also gave me needed help and support on many occasions, and I appreciate it greatly. Most of all I would like to thank my artists, photographers and section edit- ors, for being great people. We all came to- gether to work as one, and it has been an unforgettable experience. NoBoDY DoEs IT BETTER: YEARBOOK STAFF There are some people who we have yet to thank, and believe us, without them this book would have been an impossibility. First, a heart- felt thanks to our company represantive, Hap Zavack, who gave us more time and consideration than any staff could ever ask for. Secondly, we appreciate all the last- minute rush jobs done for us by everyone at O'Connor Brothers, as well as the out- standing job on all our prints. Next, thanks to Mr. Steve Gilman and everyone at the Business Office for all their time and patience with sales and advertisements. Also, some great appreciation for Mrs. Bobbie Hitch for being our favorite sub and cheer- fully putting up with the mess and confusion we created for all her art classes. Thanks to Ralph Grobman and Mr. Ramirez for covertly helping us out of some desperate situations. We canit forget Andy Shapiro and all the great pictures he gave us, and lastly, thanks to all our spon- sors and patrons for helping us out in a time of monetary crises. l.
