I I It is: with - a great deal' ofpride and pleasure we dedicate the 1960 Wampum to Mr. Kenneth Weatherby, An instructor of printing, Mr. Weatherby spent Ttwentyyears ,inthe trade before becumingta teacher: It is one of his greatest pleasures to watch the printshop students advance in industry after graduation. If our dedicatee has dislikes, they could not be found, and under his favorite likes come skiing, fishing. He resides at Chenango Bridge with his charming wife, Olive, and daughter Susan, Never is North to fear that any item will be left that requires printing. While not onthe front line, in the public eye as much, perhaps, as some others --practically every event in the school requires a printed program, a poster, or some other service ofthe printshop. To our knowledge no person has ,ever been refused assistance from this department. In fact, to us, Mr, Weatherby personifies the thought that Cheerfu1ness is like perfumeg You can't have it on you without a little rubbing off on someone else. For all your service to Our School you have helped, and for all the pleasure of your company, we at North say.Thar1kS, if new in gflitti st MR. KENNETH WEATHERBY Our 1960 Yearbook theme of Leaves has wonderful possibili- ties. We who live in a land of wooded hills, know first hand, the beauty of trees and leaves. Lakes filled with clear water from springs and streams deep in the forest, complete the scene. Staff photographers will not need to go far for ample material for illustrations. In March, with much to be done, we look forward to the completion of a Yearbook that meets the challenge to record for all of us another important year. Leaves and trees each have their own characteristics. Wood from the sugar maple is strong, takes abeauti- ful finish and endures for years. Our Seniors have acquired certain char- acteristics that make them strong candidates for successful careers. We wish the best for our '60 gradu- ates. wr f -in if A MR. TATE .4479 :ENN 1357i-HB? All branches lead to the main trunk of a mighty tree. So lt is at North, with the Varsity B club. Any boy who has lettered in any sport at North is eligible to becomea member of this active group. Recently the boys selected and purchased Vars- tty B jackets. This combined with several meet- ings during the year, and a Spring All Sports banquet are part of the feature of an active or- ganization. Thanks to Mr. Reutllnger for his aid with this organization, 54 Varsity Coaching Staff When a team wins, the often heard comment is -- they had the material -and when it loses, it is due to poor coaching. The critics have had a difficult time this year with an analysis ofthis year's champions. The part that confused the crltics, however, was that it was practically the same group that lost all but one game during the previous season. Only answer would seem to be coaching talent, even to the severest critics! North never has been short on coaching talent, and lt is with great pride we present our coaches of football. North certainly deserved to win and outplayed Utica all the way. Without some crowd-pleasing running by Dick Kingg unequaled defense by John Feldman-and Bob Cunningham's blocking Utica's extra point-the game outcome might well have ended differently- and the hundred mile trip home wouldn't have been nearly as pleasant as it was. NORTH 39 UNION ENDICOTT 0 The Indian really scalped the Tigers of U. E. this year. After the first quarter, the game gradually became a rout. The outstanding backfield play of Dick King-coupled with defensive play of John Feldman and Ed Winterstein made this truly a fine day for the North Team and coaching NORTH 20 ELMIRA SOUTHSIDE 12 On a very sunny, warm Fall afternoon the Hornet was swatted by the Indian! Although the hornets of Elmira did sting the North Indians in the first half-the Indians stamina under humid heat stood the test better than the Hornets of Elmira Southside. Though Elmira led 6-0 halftime, North's Varsity came back to have a 20-6 lead with less than a minute left to play. A mistake by North's substitutes gave Elmira a second touchdown just before the game ended. . w w w ..- , g, ,V,. ,M ,i M' '-'-.,A Q V. NORTH 14 ELMHRA FREE ACADEMY 7 Q .,.., ' F Q 'fi rg:55? ?: Certainly this game must go down as one of North's outstanding wins of the , ' it h5: l','.' 1 past several seasons. The highly favored Elmirans could never get their xaznn' I ,ff .I tfef, , ,V offense started-in fact they were held to four first downs by the vicious ' A Y Northmen. Offensively North outplayed EFA all the way. It seemed both offensively and defensively the entire North eleven were in on every play. It would be difficult to single out any individual, but was a day these boys and . their fine coaches will long remember. W' f .. NORTH 14 JOHNSON CITY 7 As the two teams lined up for the opening kick off, it seemed in size as though it were North against the New York Giants. For the first five minutes of the game, it also appeared that way-but then slowly the tide began to turn-and before the half, it was beginning to look more and more like 20th Century David and Goliath story. What the Northmen lacked in size they cer- tainly made up in desire. It was one of North's finest wins in many seasons. NORTH 6 CENTRAL 6 Take a rainy day-mix well with an overconfident unbeaten North team. Add one highly inspired Central team. Stir rain well into field-mix these two teams thoroughly with mud and the end result is a tie game. In fact North was fortunate not to lose this key game to its cross town rivals. On an intercepted Dick King pass late ln the game-it looked as though Central's back would go all the way . Only supreme effort by Dick King stopped the Centralite on North's 23 yard line. North then intercepted a Central pass a few plays later and this ended Central's scoring chances, just before the NORTH 12 ITHACA 6 game ended. NORTH 19 VESTAL 6 The eve of the Vestal game found the North Team undefeated and uncon- cerned. After a listless pregame practice on Friday, the team received a startling announcement. Varsity line coach Gerry Demaree announced his decision to retire from coaching after 13 years of service. Certainly this had its effect on the team, as they soundly defeated Vestal the next afternoon -in fact Vestal's offense never got off to a start, so vicious and eager were North's llnemen and backs. 58 By an unusual quirk of fate, North had won the championship before it met Ithaca in the final clash of the year. As all other teams in the conference had two losses even lf North had lost to Ithaca, they still would have been Southern Tier Champions. The team had its pride however, and would have no part of winning a championship-with a blemish on its record. The North- men solidly defeated Ithaca in the final game of the year, giving North its second championship in football. May they have a million more! . . Football Coaches Diller and Kibler put the J. V. 's into third place this season. The team had a 3-1-1 year. The annual game with E. F.A. was called off due to an accident suffered by E.F.A. Ex-J. V. Tree are found everywhere. The same is true with the Red Cross. Our chapter of the Junior Red Cross at North High has been growing for many years and now is in full bloom. The Junior Red Cross has helped the unfortunate, including trips to the County Home to visit with the patients. At Christmas time a collection of cards is made in all the homerooms to get cards to send to the patients. Also at Christmas time a tree and presents are offered to the children at the St. Mary's Children's Home. To obtain money this organization sponsors dances and contests and annually collects donations. Under the supervision of Mrs. Hannis the organization has carried out the main idea of the Junior Red Cross and that is to give aid when and where it is needed, Pep Club fi 5 While fall leaves are changing colors Pep Club is cheering for our football team, and when the leaves begin to fall our Pep Club is still full of pep and steam and cheers on our basketball team.
